you might not agree but part of activism is knowing to choose your battles, because what do i care if my eighty year old grandma doesn't know the exact correct terms to refer to lgbtq+ identities as long as she supports and respects everyone, what do i care about the old man in the almacén that isn't online so he doesn't know every aspect of feminism who told me happy women's day when he understands the issues women are put through and supports the fight, I'd rather be met with truly kind and concerned ppl who care and have been in this fight far more time than us than all these articulate young people who at the end of the day don't truly give a shit
One of my coworkers is in his fifties, has a reputation as the resident “grumpy old man,” and is definitely not always politically correct.
But one time at a work party he said something that I don’t even remember what it is, but it bugged him so much that THREE DAYS LATER (it was a long weekend) he pulled me aside to apologize. He said he was afraid he’d made me uncomfortable, and he felt really bad about it. He explicitly said he wanted to make sure I had a comfortable work environment. He assured me that if he ever said something that did make me uncomfortable, I could just tell him to knock it off and he’d stop. Or, he added, if that was scary, I could tell one of our coworkers and THEY could tell him to knock it off. He was terribly humble and earnest through the whole of it, and I was completely taken aback because, like I said, I couldn’t even remember what he’d done wrong. This coworker also, despite having at least twenty+ years of experience on me and being an expert in the field, has always taken the time to listen to my ideas and engage with me on solving technical issues like I also am an expert in the field.
And I would MUCH rather work with him than any guy who knows all the right feminist lingo but doesn’t listen to a thing I say. The goal has ALWAYS been to treat everyone with kindness and respect, and once a person’s activism gets removed from that, they’re sidetracking progress. The right words aren’t nearly as important as the heart behind it.
THESIS: the real reason that people stay on this hellsite is not “chronological order” or “the drama” or whatever (per se), but is instead linked to how tumblr, unlike most social media, is not optimised to give content as short of a half-life as possible, but instead is optimised to let content continue to cycle for months, years, even decades. this has in turn led to a more consistent centralised site “culture” in which there is more coherent linkage among different areas of the site, thus also explaining why its content permeates so thoroughly throughout the internet.
I think a couple other things also really help:
Everyone on tumblr has the option to remain anonymous. At no point when creating a blog does tumblr ask for personal information (other users might, but that’s different)
The tag system is perfectly designed for op’s point. Making it so that all the tags you add to a post disappear when someone reblogs it from you is crucial. On twitter, I always feel as though I have to have something important to say if I respond to a tweet. On tumblr I can put whatever the fuck I want in the tags and like maybe 3 people will see it before it is lost forever.
There’s no verification, no ad revenue, no pressure by the platform to keep creating. This really takes the stress of social media away from this platform and makes it so that communities can organically form. Similarly, corporations have NO platform on tumblr cause there aren’t reliable ways to advertise on this site.
Follower count is not public information unless it’s voluntarily shared. So ‘popular’ users feel more like down to earth fellow human beings who happen to have good content who actually engages with their audience instead of a celebrity who’s unreachable.
Also we don’t use the verify symbol
Yup.

One of the most common arguments I encounter when debating whether or not capitalism is the best system available for America/humanity is “the board game analogy”. And it goes something like this-
“Bezos, Gates, billionaires of all kinds and even less wealthy folks who built their fortune by exploiting workers are all merely players in a game. They are playing by the rules. Rules that we ourselves wrote ‘democratically’. Sure they use loopholes, but isn’t a loophole just a less apparent rule? They’re playing fairly and they got rich, like in Monopoly. Good for them!”
Ok. I hear you but listen to me. Let’s assume for a minute that these rules weren’t written by lobbyists or, more accurately, indirectly by the mega wealthy themselves. For the sake of argument, the rules of the Game of Capitalism were written via direct democracy by working class citizens. Ok, are we on the same page now?
OUR LIVES ARE NOT A FUCKING GAME!!!
If I work for half of my waking life, I deserve a full return on my labor! My children deserve healthcare whether or not I can afford to pay for it out of pocket! They deserve to get a good education! Just because I don’t have the cunning, morally depraved, self serving reptile brain of Jeff Bezos that does not mean that I should work for my whole life and remain in financial insecurity for my whole life! There is more at stake than play money here. It’s our lives.
“Well, you’re playing by the same rules, play smarter like the rich do!”
THIS GAME REQUIRES WINNERS AND LOSERS!!! Even if I decided to do what it took to become wealthy while my neighbors starved and got left behind, what about those neighbors? There is so little room at the top. Mega-wealth necessitates abject poverty for many and it necessitates a middle class that does not receive what they’re owed!
Even if we had a say in how this system operated, and we DO NOT, isn’t it time to stand up and finally declare that it isn’t the best possible economic system for humanity? Even if it is incredibly comfortable and decadent for 1% of us?
The rules are broken, so fuck the rules but more importantly FUCK THIS GAME.
By the way, Monopoly was created to demonstrate how cruel and exploitative capitalism is by nature. Now, after a lifetime of indoctrination we point to it as an affirmation of captitalism’s virtue. Make what you will of that madness.
