Intro post

Hello!!

I wanted to finally update my pinned post before SotR comes out.

This is one of my first and main Hunger Games-related blogs on tumblr.

A bit about the blog:

*I use Picsart a lot, so I will sometimes share HG related things I’ve made with that.

*This blog has turned into somewhat of a personal place to post anything and everything I deem fit—my other SotR/HG blog is hopefully going to be the place for more quality info/things to engage with!! Lmao

A bit about me:

*Haymitch Abernathy is my favorite character (and has been since the start)

*I hold District 3 and District 12 specifically close to my heart.

*I love the politics of the hunger games (arguably first and foremost), but I equally love it for its characters and story.

*I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I was a Haymitch Abernathy x “his girl” Lenore Dove truther for a long ass time.

*I do not like Tbosas as much as I like the original trilogy!

*Unashamed maker and lover of Hunger Games/Panem OCs, as well as fanfic, AUs, etc etc.

*Sunrise on the Reaping genuinely means so much to me, even before I’ve read it. I wanna elaborate in its own dedicated post, but even if I somehow end up hating the book, I will always love it in concept and the time spent from June 2024-March 2025.

*I’m currently 18yrs old as of writing this March 4th, 2025.

*I love film, media broadly, social sciences, and environmentalism. I adore the Internet and “fandom” generally (with some exceptions).

*I have my fair share of criticisms with the HG films, but I’ll tell you I love them. I do love them.

You can (rightly) criticize Sunrise on the Reaping all you want, but in my opinion one of the objectively best things to come from it is all of the fanart. You can’t tell me that isn’t a good thing. All of the fanart >>>>>

I can really appreciate elements of what the SOTR film is doing (with production design specifically) but yeah it is definitely not reflective of how I personally imagine Haymitch’s games to be.

I'm ngl I really like being a fan of THG series because of all the different online (mental) spaces I can occupy.

Do I want to be and engage in hater activities (aka opinionated criticism)? I can. Do I want to engage with people who love the films and make edits based on them? I could go chill over there for awhile if I really wanted to. Do I want to specifically look at art? Fanfiction? Do I want to get into the collecting sphere?? all possibilities. Do I want to block everyone/log off and literally just enjoy the series on my own without engaging with anyone online?? Hell yeah I can do that too.

Reading Sunrise on the Reaping for the first time.

Haymitch and his gf remind me of an old song from my country about a man that lost his love in the midst of a revolution— Literally taken from him, so he has to live alone and reminisce about his love only in memories, and now his life is only darkness. Because his sun has set. And now I'm crying.

Translating it for y'all because you NEED TO KNOW WHY:

"Contemplating in my memory, about that place— (Contemplando en mi memoria, hacía aquel lugar.)

I have a lot of complicated feelings about sotr tbh, but I'm genuinely curious:

What would you have preferred Haymitch's backstory to be? I'm specifically curious about canon-compliant (to the og trilogy, idc as much about tbosas but if it's canon-compliant to that too then all the better)

I've been thinking about this a lot, after reading sotr. Yeah I had my multiple ideas BEFORE sotr, but after reading it my brain is kinda muddled with what I'd keep and what I prefer.

And I'm not just talking about like... CHANGING aspects of sotr to fit better. I mean, without SotR's existence, what is your best/preferred version of Haymitch's life (ideally canon-compliant but this is open to whoever)

I personally would've preferred/made it my HC that he was always his 'persona' we glimpse in CF. Like he still can have a soft spot for Maysilee (bc I do love and ship it without shame) but I think it makes for a more interesting departure from typical D12 history-repeats if we finally get essentially a dick learning how to be empathetic, take care of others not in his immediate family, etc.

And either way, I'd've waited longer for his family to get killed. I know it's technically CF canon, too, but having everyone wiped out basically the day he gets back from the Capitol was just not the move. Let's see him fully devolve, losing family member after family member despite his best efforts to finally brown-nose the Capitol. Let's see him turn to a new loved one after the last one's death and that next one always being killed next. Let's see him realize that liquor and his own sadness are the only things Snow can't take from him. Give me that HURTING hurting; not that 'we'll summarize it in passing during the epilogue' hurting...

Yess I heavily agree about Haymitch’s loved ones’ deaths. I also would have preferred to not kill them all at once, and that the “after games” section should have been longer.

Imagine if, instead of a lengthy arena portion, we got an equally lengthy post-games section. To me, that’s the real draw of Haymitch’s history. The aftermath.

By the way, I wholeheartedly credit Rachel Zegler and Tbosas film (as well as everyone working on the music) for solidifying my love of folk music.

I used to be one of those people who said they “didn’t like country music,” but since about 2021 I’ve realized that it’s a bit more complex than that LMAO. It’s odd, because I don’t think I would’ve denied loving folk songs/music, but I remember specifically relistening to tbosas’s soundtrack and it just kind of clicked how much I love this sound.

And it’s almost hypocritical because looking back there were a lot of folk songs that I held dear, I just claimed to dislike ‘country.’ I won’t go into all of the politics, but I do think it’s worth mentioning that politics kind of played a role in that as well.

I know I’m not alone in this, weirdly enough I’ve seen more people come out and express their love for what is apparently a new wave of mainstream country (I think when Beyoncé comes out with a country album, that’s when you know it’s mainstream /hj).

Btw I know there are differences between country and folk as categories, at least in the sense that people consider them different, but I still think they were similar enough to keep in my little text post lmao.

I’m not trying to make this a super long post, but I also think it’s worth mentioning that folk music has different meanings and can be referring to different things.

Description blurb on folk music: “Folk music is a music genre that includes traditional folk music and the contemporary genre that evolved from the former during the 20th-century folk revival. Some types of folk music may be called world music. Traditional folk music has been defined in several ways: as music transmitted orally, music with unknown composers, music that is played on traditional instruments, music about cultural or national identity, music that changes between generations (folk process), music associated with a people's folklore, or music performed by custom over a long period of time. It has been contrasted with commercial and classical styles. The term originated in the 19th century, but folk music extends beyond that.” (Wikipedia—I literally just copy and pasted the first paragraph, I’m sorry to all of my professors)

And just to add, here’s a definition/blurb for country music: “Country (also called country and western) is a music genre originating in the southern regions of the United States, both the American South and the Southwest. First produced in the 1920s, country music is primarily focused on singing stories about working-class and blue-collar American life.[2]” (Wikipedia again, just to be consistent)

So Folk music extends way beyond the U.S., but country is (at least definitionally) more localized to the southern U.S.

Tbosas draws on Appalachian folk sounds, which is both folk and (imo kind of) country.

Tying it back to THG, I really do think the world building set up in the series is so rich and can give way for people to really analyze and delve into the complexities of its politics. It is such a class-driven story, but it doesn’t shy away from interesting depictions of identities and culture. At least, I generally don’t think it does.

District 12’s music is so tied to its identity, to its history, and I think it’s refreshing to be be able to like, relish in what we get.

All this to say, I love the soundtrack for tbosas.

As far as actual movie tracks go, Nothing You Can Take was my favorite by far.

However, because I've never had any other opportunity to mention it before... there were a few songs missing from the movie that didn't get official versions (and also some covers that I prefer to the official ones)...

I love Maiah Wynne's rendition of Crawling to You ! I love most of her interpretations (even if some aren't very folksy sounding), but I think Crawling to You is my favorite (and does have the folksy sound). I am also a huge fan of her version of Pure as the Driven Snow—which sounds similar to the movie version, but is a little more romantic, in my opinion.

I find Emma Lee's version of The Ballad of Lucy Gray Baird to be the definitive version of the song. A lot of the movie's songs grew on me, but I still to this day do not like the official version of The Ballad of Lucy Gray Baird. The tone is completely off to me. It sounds way too happy to me, not what I think of when I think a ballad at all, nor does it match the haunting melody that Coriolanus described in the book. Lee's version fixes the tone problem and she sings it in a minor key, while also maintaining that folksy sound.

If I may be a bit conspiratorial... I think Lee's version suspiciously similar to the movie version. Wynne's version of Pure as the Driven Snow sounds similar to the movie version, but... listen to Lee's version of The Ballad of Lucy Gray Baird and then the movie version. The melodies sound almost identical. It's especially suspicious since Lee's cover isn't on Spotify anymore... All that aside, I think Lee's cover of Deep in the Meadow is also very lovely, and she has a great cover of Pure as the Driven Snow, as well.
