Hunter is the middle brother in the Calhoun family and as such, he’s got classic middle child syndrome. He’s loud-mouthed and reckless, always getting himself into trouble but somehow talking his way out of it. From the time he was young he was always getting put in detention or being picked up by the cops. Unfortunately for Hunter, his mom left them high and dry when he was young, and his father was a cruel man. Though his older brother Clay took the brunt of their father’s anger, he’s had his fair share of unexplained bruises and broken bones.
After dropping out of high school, Hunter started to up the ante on how far he could push the boundaries before he was in too much trouble to come back from it. He’s been arrested no less than 15 times in his adult life, spent a couple of years in jail if he added up all the small sentences he’s been handed down, and somehow still hasn’t learned his lesson. He’s on a first name basis with most of the law enforcement in town.
Hunter works as a mechanic, self taught, and if you asked him he’d say its about the only thing he’s really good at. He can fix just about any car or motorcycle and he’s known to be the kinda guy who will stop and help you for free if you’re broken down on the side of the road somewhere.
It’s not often that Hunter finds himself in a real relationship with anyone because he’s learned that he’s not exactly boyfriend material, so more often than not he’s the guy you call for a good time on Friday night. After the trainwreck that was his last relationship, he’s more than happy to keep it casual with women these days.
Speaking of relationships, the one woman who’s ever been able to capture his heart and hold onto it, was Ellie Jones, eight years ago. She might have been way out of his league, a rich girl with no reason to ever look twice at his kinda trash, but when they collided it was game over. Hunter knew she was special so he cut off all his little friends with benefits, quit flirting with other girls and even tried to clean up his act to make her proud. But old habits die hard and he was too stupid to keep it together forever. After cheating on her more than a couple of times, Ellie got tired of his shit and left him.
After Ellie left, Hunter got real depressed and started drinking a lot and making a hell of a lot more bad decisions. They got back together a couple of times, though it was more like regrettable hookups over the years, but she never stuck around for him to hurt her again. Hunter knew he didn’t deserve her and he’d be beating himself up every day for the rest of his life about screwing that one up.
Living in Half Moon Bay makes Hunter and his brothers seem like outcasts and he’s fine with that most days, but he can’t deny that there are times he wishes he could fit in with the local crowd. People look down on him and treat him like the redneck that rolled into town on a west wind. He doesn’t usually care, only occasionally finding himself hurt by the way a local looks him up and down like he’s trash.
Hunter lives in a small one bedroom house in Westside and drives an old pickup truck that is the nicest thing he owns and only because he spent three years fixing it up and slowly buying parts to make it look less like a junker. He’s happy with what he has though and doesn’t feel the need to impress people.
The one thing he’s always had on his side is charm. No matter how much trouble he gets into or what kind of redneck he looks and acts like, people seem to always be drawn to his sweet southern charm. It’s part of the reason Ellie stuck around so long. Even people who don’t generally hang around his kind of folks tend to be friends with Hunter because he can make anybody smile with a wink and a compliment.
Someday Hunter would love to be a father, though the idea scares the shit out of him after the way his own family fell apart as a kid. His older brother doesn’t know this but the way he took on responsibility for Hunter and their younger brother showed him what a real man was a long time ago. Hunter wants his own kids so he can prove to himself that his parents didn’t totally fuck him up for good.
