"Seriously? Of all people, I'd expect that to be like...what you're catcalled with or something." She laughed, purposefully withholding the definition. Maybe it was more of a word tossed around in L.A. and hadn't made it's way to Half Moon Bay. Leave it to Lena to teach Hunter something new, exactly what she'd enjoyed during their time in high school and her spontaneous visits after she'd left. Sometimes she'd bring gifts, a memento, nothing too fancy to give the wrong impression, nothing she'd find particularly meaningful for the sake of keeping ties loosely wound.

Even still...despite her efforts, Lena had still missed Hunter and his genuine sincerity. All over the world people were fake, different versions of their true selves--just like her. Hunter...he was nothing of the sort. And she didn't deserve that. "I might be serious~" Playing up the teasing, there was a sparkle of mischief in her eyes that seemed to light up with Hunter's reaction. Funny how her heart skipped a beat, and with it the truth came out. "It's a trial run. But shh! don't tell anyone, okay? You're the first to know." It could be like old times, couldn't it? Minus the unintentional but intentional hurting of another person and herself in the process. "Technically not for good 'cause it's still T.B.D. ...so I guess you owe me a kiss? Half a kiss?"

Hunter shrugged and went about clocking out and popping his head into his bosses office to tell him he was fucking off for the afternoon. Thankfully the man was so used to Hunter and his antics that nothing was a surprise anymore and he waved him off with a roll of his eyes. "Alright, where we going?" He asked, the backwards ball cap on his head doing nothing to shade his eyes from the bright sunshine as they stepped out of the mechanics shop.

"Don't you toy with my feelings now, Kaplan." Hunter warned before she explained fully that she might be staying for good. He grinned widely and bent down to grab her face in both his hands, planting a kiss on her lips before picking Lena up and spinning her around. "Yeeee haw! Girlie's back in town y'all!" He shouted with a laugh, to no one in particular because all the guys in the shop were staring at him like he was a damn fool. Because he was. "Well who knows, I might owe ya more than that if you're a good girl." He winked and laced his fingers with hers once he'd set her feet back on the ground.

clay was more than experienced with agitated bulls, with calming birthing mares, but when the features of his younger brother grew panic-stricken he stood, clueless, for a long moment. what was he meant to do to soothe the male, when their worst nightmares were the same and, quite possibly, were coming true before their eyes? the wrench clattered to the ground, and clay sprung into action as though pacifying a spooked horse. “hey, hey—pull yourself together, god dammit.” his hands found his brother’s shoulders, holding him steady, blue eyes burrowing into hunter’s. “you’re a good kid, alright? she don’t hate you. i should’a kept my damn mouth shut. i probably got the total wrong end of the stick and gone done and freaked you out, good an’ proper. there ain’t no kid.” was he sure of his words? far from it, but with hunter as worked up as he was there was no hope in speaking sense in that moment. calloused hands broke away from the shoulders of his brother, and his lips peeled away from his teeth in a sneer as his lunch graced the sand. “fuckin’ hell, bub…” clay muttered, lowering onto one knee, patting his palm between hunter’s shoulder blades as though they were young boys again. “you ain’t a bad kid. this ain’t your fault. we’ll figure it out, alright? together, like we always do.” they had figured out the move from tennessee to half moon bay, took their change in living arrangements in their stride. this would be no different.

Hunter really wanted to believe that his brother had gotten it all wrong, but the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. And why would Camila tell him after what he'd put her through? He didn't deserve to be a part of her life at all. But the kid...he shook his head and met his brothers eyes once he had finished unloading into the dirt and stumbled back, kneeling down and trying to catch his breath. "Clay...if I have a fuckin' son I didn't know about." Hunter didn't need to say another word because Clayton knew how badly Hunter wanted to prove he could be a father in ways their own never was. He knew that all Hunter had ever wanted in the world was to right some of the wrongs of their parents.

His eyes started to well up with tears and he turned to his big brother, his safe space, his person that could fix any problem in his life and waited for something that would make all this go away. But there was nothing. So instead, he gripped the front of his brother's shirt and buried his face into it as he let the tears out and cried like he was a kid again. Something he hadn't done in front of Clay in years. "Why wouldn't she tell me? I...I missed so damn much already!"

"Novel." She replied evenly, a flutter of a smile, "A long while at least." Stori beamed, "I always choose both whenever I can. Gardening does require sustenance, does it not?" She waited for him and stepped up onto the sidewalk where she looped her arm through his, "What's your favorite flavor? Apparently you can tell a lot about a person based on the sort of ice cream they pick."

"It sure does." Hunter smirked and took her arm as they started walking down the street. Stori was a character if he'd ever seen one and while Hunter wasn't entirely sure if she was planning on hooking up with him today or just teasing, he was still going to enjoy their little walk. "Can you really? Alright, tell me what this says about me then, my favorite is chocolate with peanut butter cups in it." Probably something that wound its way back to 'you're a child, Hunter Calhoun' which would not be surprising to him at all.

Jackson spotted Hunter slipping into a seat at the bar just as he finished polishing off a glass, making his way over and resting his elbows on the table as he greeted him with a nod of his chin. "You ever heard the one where the cowboy in jorts walks into a bar?"

It was always possible that someone was fucking with him, but it was also a possibility that people were making jokes about him around town so Hunter looked up at Jackson with a shake of his head. "Are people really talkin' bout my damn shorts still? Everyone is just so jealous of my thighs, I swear." He ran his tongue along his bottom lip and shook his head. "Can I get a Corona with a lime?"

There was no way. She wouldn't keep that kind of information from him. For all the shit Hunter had done wrong, he knew that if something that serious had happened, Camila would have called. He might be a shitty boyfriend but he wasn't a shitty person. She had to know that, right? But his mind was racing and his hands were shaking and there was only one thing he could do right now and that was show up at her house and ask her.

He'd done the math in his head...and then on paper because it was too hard, and it lined up...it all did. As Hunter banged his fist on the door to her house, he felt like he was gonna pass out or throw up or something but he kept it together. The door finally swung open after he'd been knocking a while and he met her eyes, swallowing hard as they held each other's stare.

"Tell me the truth." He croaked, hands in his pockets so she wouldn't see them shaking. "I wanna believe you wouldn't lie about somethin' like that so please Cami...tell me. Is he...am I...?"

lalita couldn't help but let out a laugh at the small hands comment. "i think you have the perfect size hands. no need to sit around worrying about your body and if it is in proportion." she teased. "your hands arent small, i was just teasing." she reassured him. lita loved her relationship with hunter. it had once started out with sex but overtime the sex had pretty much ended and a beautiful friendship had blossomed. she enjoyed every moment she had spent with the other. "i know, but don't tell anyone i'm sweet. i got a rep to protect." she joked knowing her reputation may had be a look cooky but she was certainly a sweet girl. "yeah joa has been on one lately.. i have no idea why." she confessed. "but let me close our tab and i'll meet you outside. next place is on you."

Hunter laughed out loud when he realized she was just pulling his leg and growled at her as he wrapped his arms around Lalita's waist and spun her around, tickling her sides and picking her feet up off the ground as he did. "You're a little devil tonight ain't ya?" He grinned and shook his head as he set her down and swatted her on the ass as she headed for the bar. "Yes ma'am." Wherever they went next would hopefully have cheap drinks since Hunter was always broke as a fucking joke. He waited outside, leaving Lalita inside alone only because he knew Joaquinn would literally tear the head off anyone who harassed a woman under his roof so he felt like she was safe. When she emerged into the early evening glow he offered his friend his hand. "Where to?"

Camila was happy to hear that the man was working on himself. Despite everything that had happened between the two of them she never wished him any ill will. She loved the man, still to this day even if being with him wasn't in the cards. "I'm glad to hear that." She spoke and she hoped that he could heat the sincerity in her voice. Hunter wasn't a bad guy and considering the type of upbringing he had it was a miracle that he had turned out as well as he had. Going into the relationship she had known full well he lacked in certain areas, her problem had been believing that she could 'fix' him or teach him how to settle down, something that wasn't her responsibility.

She knew that he had tried though, and she knew that the man did love or, or at least had at one point. That had been the reason it had become so hard for her to let go, the reason that she had to move away in order to prevent herself from falling back into the continuous loop of forgiving him only to be hurt again. It was easy to walk away from someone who was heartless but it was hard walking away from someone who had the biggest heart in the world but had simply never been taught how to correctly use it.

Camila's heart skipped a beat as the nickname left the older males lips, so effortlessly as if there hadn't been years in between the last time he had spoken it. However that was nothing in comparison to how her heart nearly stopped all together in her chest the moment his hand met hers. "I never hated you." She started before allowing a small chuckle to leave her lips "Alright maybe the first year or so I had some harsh feelings towards you." She admitted. Leaving out the fact that it was due to those feelings that there was a two year old sitting in her lap that she hadn't reached out about even though she had his phone number.

She wanted to admit to him now the secret she had kept, the words on the tip of her tongue. However before she could get the words out her phone began to ring. She apologized before answering. After a moment of fast talking and her telling the person on the other end to calm down she hung up, standing from her seat and pulling out a few bills for the chicken nuggets that hadn't quite arrived yet. "I have to go, emergency at the bakery but I would definitely like to talk some more?" She spoke. It wasn't an attempt to make any concrete plans more so informing the man that she would reach out now that she was back in town.

It was hard on Hunter to even look at Camila now and know how much he had screwed up her life at one point. She deserved better than someone who couldn't fucking keep it in his pants. She deserved a man who was one hundred percent in on her and who loved her more than anything else in the world. Hunter had tried to be that guy but something in him was just broken and he knew it. "I just wish I coulda done things different. I think about that a lot." He admitted with a sigh and looked away from her for a minute. What was he even doing? Trying to reconcile something? That didn't make no damn sense.

"Of course, you go do your thing. I'm always around and my number's the same so you can call me up any time you want." He had a sneaking suspicion that she wasn't gonna call but he wouldn't say that. "Nice to meet you too little guy." He held up his fist to bump with the toddler before he thought that he wasn't sure babies knew about fist bumping. "I'll see ya around, Cami."

"well, i don't know, buddy. i don't know how that shit works. some animals can be pregnant for, like, two years or somethin' crazy." it was no secret that he'd never passed science class. in fact, he wasn't sure he had ever actually turned up for one. his schooling days had been sacrificed in order to raise his brothers the way they needed to be raised, carting them to school and slapping them on the back of the wrist whenever they failed to turn in their homework on time. perhaps he was a hypocrite, but as long as they grew up to be capable men clay was satisfied he had done his job correctly. "ladies are weird. i worked at isabella's ranch for years without her clockin' me. i think they have a select way of thinkin', a way that me an' you would never be able to understand." or perhaps they were the problem. in fact, in retrospect, they were definitely the problem. the boys had no common sense, and even less grasp on the opposite gender. "listen, kid," he straightened, pulling at the hem of his plaid shirt, "if it is yours you better step the hell up. i ain't havin' no repeat of our daddy. you're gonna be a good, stand-up southern gentleman and do your bit how mama taught you. an' if it ain't yours, well, you can ignore everythin' i said and keep on trucking." a slap was dealt between hunter's shoulders, "how about a beer?"

Hunter set down the belt he was working on and twirled the wrench around his fingers, his mind racing at the idea that maybe this was a possibility. "Well wait...how long is a pregnancy like, a year or somethin'?" He ran back through his mind on how old that kid looked, when he last saw her, how much time would have passed and... "Fuck." Hunter's face went pale as he turned his eyes on his big brother, silently pleading for Clay to have an answer to this that wasn't Hunter being a father. Of course he wanted kids, as scary as it was, Hunter knew he could be a better dad than the one they had. But he didn't want it like this. He didn't want to have missed out on years of his child's life.

"Clay..." His eyes were full of panic as he dropped the wrench now and stepped back from the truck, closing his eyes to try and calm his racing pulse. "I didn't even consider that he might be mine." Hunter whispered and felt his hands start to shake. "If I had a son why wouldn't she have called me? Does she fuckin' hate me that much? Think that little of me?" For all of his faults, Hunter wasn't a bad person, if he knew there was a kid involved, everything would have been different. "I'm gonna..." Hunter dropped to his knees and held onto the bumper of the truck for support before he leaned over and emptied the contents of his stomach into the dirt.

Sanem couldn't pretend not to be amused at the way Hunter seemed to realize that perhaps he was in way over his head with this robot wrestling thing and maybe should let the idea go. But still she had to grin at his perseverance and nod along with him. "You know Hunter, if it was anyone else...I've have doubts but with you--I'm almost 100% sure you will figure it out." And that was good but then she didn't want to know how he'd react when he realized the whole thing wasn't real. "I know--but well, I just figured you might be busy but good to know that you're available whenever I need you," the smile on her face was genuine because this man could almost always make her smile--no matter what else was happening in her life. "Hopefully I don't end up taking advantage of that offer...who knows when you're rescind it and never answer when I need you."

Sanem was always so sweet to him and Hunter loved the way that she accepted him for who he was. He wasn't the brightest guy out there and he had more flaws than not but behind all that Hunter really had a heart of gold and people who were kind to him really reminded him of why he loved this city and the people here. "Honey all I do is work and drink beer. I ain't got shit goin' on that keeps me from being unavailable for you and your pretty face." He shot her a wink and ran his tongue over his bottom lip before looking away from her for a minute. She had the kinda eyes he could get lost in if he looked too long. "Now don't you put that on me, I'll always be here. As a friend or a fun time, whatever you need."

Stori slid her shades to the crown of her head, "Traffic isn't going anywhere. There is a cow and her calf up there holding up a berry truck." Stori said, spinning her keys around her finger. "We're more or less parked for the foreseeable future, darlin'," She said with an infectious imitation of his accent that gave way he was simply not from the area. "I've got a pretty decent green thumb but from time to time it's I'm sure I could use some help. " Stepping closer, "I'm Stori....not miss unless you insist." She smiled warmly, nodding off towards the sidewalks. "You wanna pull over and go get ice cream or something. I'm going anyway better than sitting in traffic hoping something decent comes on the radio."

Hunter sighed because he knew that meant they'd be here a while. "Yeah I know who you are, I was just tryin' to be polite is all." He chuckled and looked her up and down once before he nodded and flipped his blinker on so he could pull his truck over to the curb and park it. "Well make up your mind honey are we gardenin' or gettin' ice cream? Or both?" Hunter was about eighty percent sure he knew what she meant by gardening since it had been some sorta sexual innuendo somehow in the groupchat earlier but he was always a gentleman and wasn't gonna press his luck.

joaquinn didnt have too terribly many rules at the club.. but a dress code was one and he just hated those damn shorts. the perks of being the owner. when he heard hunters comment about his imprint he couldnt help but just laugh. the laugh came from deep in his stomach as he shook his head. "i will take the chance of people getting distracted over that." he nodded and then playfully rolled his eyes. "how about we just get you a drink and a dance?" he suggested. "i know some lovely ladies who could really use the money."

Most of the time Hunter felt like he could tell if someone liked him or not but Joaquinn tended to leave him stumped. Felt like the guy was always scowling or telling him off but then he'd go and do a one eighty and laugh like that and make him feel like they were buddies. Hunter followed Joaquinn out to the bar and took a seat, leaning both arms on the bar top. "Fine, fine..." He sighed and ordered himself a mai tai, hopefully with a little umbrella in it too, and looked back over his shoulder at the dancers who were working today. His eyes trailed through the room looking for Lili. "Hey when's your birthday?"

Tana had serious doubts about moving back into her childhood home. It wasn’t living with her parents at 28 that bothered her; she’d had enough setbacks and financial support from them to be properly humbled already. It was living with her parents at all. They’d been barely present in her life growing up, leaving Ben to provide the emotional stability and chauffeur her to guitar lessons, so it was odd to suddenly be needed now. Her lease was almost up though, and her mom was going to need the support after an upcoming surgery, and it was the best solution for both problems, at least in the short-term. She hoped.

Her former roommates had been kind enough to help her pack and load her car, but apparently, that was as far as the goodwill went, since she was stuck unloading it on her own. She let out a huff as she went to grab a box from the trunk and it barely budged. “Who packed this like a maniac? And why didn’t I pick a lighter hobby?” she muttered, opening the top flap to reveal stacks of books.

If ever someone needed a good guy to show up in their time of need, Hunter was the one to call. He was a put your pants on Hunter I know it's 3 am but my car broke down and I need you kinda friend and never said no when someone asked for his help. He'd be damned if he let people struggle. Hunter really believed that he and his brothers may not have survived their childhood if not for the kindness of people who offered a helping hand here and there. "Tana, babe." He shook his head and looked down at the girl he looked at like a little sister. "I'm pretty sure it was you that packed these." He failed to hear her joke in there, or maybe she wasn't joking, the lines in Hunter's life were all too blurry to read between. "You read all these?" He asked curiously, thumbing through one on the top of the stack.

lalita never minded the jorts, she loved the wild side of hunter and all her friends. it was exciting and fun and she was certainly a person who enjoyed standing out and being yourself. however tonight how sexy the man looked was far from her mind. knowing camila was back played in her mind on repeat. sure she had only recently found out about it her friend coming back into town. though she knew that hunter was going to handle it a whole lot harder than she ever would. she was doing her best to forget about it for the night until she could talk to camila about telling hunter. he deserved to know and it was hurting her to not tell her friend.

hearing his comment made her laugh, "you arent supposed to agree," she said through her laugh, "you are suppose to tell me that my little handful is perfectly enough and to someone like you with smaller hands they are huge." she teased as she laughed into the twirl he gave her."stop, you are a great guy and if i was every interested in marriage or marrying a man at that you would be my first choice." she told him as she moved with him. "you are a great guy.. really."

"You know I love your--wait, do you think I have small hands?" Hunter stopped mid thought to look down at his hands and frown. He had never been self conscious about them before but now he was looking at himself in a new light. He tried to stay focused on the dancing though and ignored the way he was now refusing to look at his own hands. With everything else on his mind that was the last thing he needed to worry about. His life was about to get a lot more complicated, though he didn't know that just yet.

Spinning Lalita around on the dancefloor was an easy task, and Hunter didn't give a damn who was watching them. He never cared who thought he was crazy or too much, he had the people in his life he loved and cared about and that was good enough for him. No room in his little bubble for haters. "Well god dammit Lalita Khan, if you ain't the sweetest little thing in this town." He chuckled and kissed her cheek before he finally slowed to a stop as the music changed and he could almost swear he heard Joaquinn grumbling about him being there again. "I think we oughta skidaddle on to the next place before Quinni kicks me out."

as hunter went about his business, grabbing dohickeys and god-knows-whats, clay wondered when his little brother had become so knowledgeable. his skill for motors and engines certainly hadn’t come from the eldest sibling. the blonde was more the ‘kick it and find out’ type, somebody who believed anything that couldn’t be fixed by a hard hit with a boot wasn’t worth fixing to begin with. that went for vehicles, for tools, for life. “well, you best darn keep it that way,” the male shot back—what was a bond between brothers if there weren’t harsh words shared every so often? the difference with the calhoun’s was that they were water straight off a duck’s bee-hind.

his lips twisted. his brows furrowed. “camila?” clay repeated, hoping that the buildup of sawdust in his ears had caused him to mishear. at the news his throat ran dry: all diplomacy was lost. “an’ it ain’t yours, is it? christ, hunter, don’t tell me the fuckin’ kid is yours.” it was clay’s worst nightmare, passing down their cursed double-helixes, seeing the eyes and hairline of their father in an innocent young thing.

Hunter hummed to himself softly as he worked on the engine before chuckling and rolling his eyes at his brother. "Yes sir." He saluted the man indignantly and kept working on replacing that burned out belt. This was about the only thing that Hunter was any good at and he knew that it was one small thing he could do to repay Clayton for all the years he spent parenting himself and their younger brother, even before he was legally their guardian. Clay had stepped up when he didn't have to. He could have run for the hills and left those two to fend for themselves but he didn't and that wasn't lost on Hunter.

"What?" He dropped the wrench in his hand and cursed as it smacked something else in the engine. "Mine? How could it be mine she's been gone." Hunter didn't do the math in his head, mostly cause he wasn't that good at math, but he was sure there was no way. "If I had a kid she woulda called me. No matter how mad at me she was." Hunter explained to his brother, though the racing panic in his head and his chest wasn't settling. She would have called...right?

Oh that signature humbleness. She could eat him up. "Still such a himbo, huh?" Lena asked rhetorically with a dazed smirk pulled on her lips. Affectionately. Himbo a word she'd always teased him with, but there was more to Hunter than just looks. Though in this circumstance it was true because yes he was attractive and yes he was being dumb cause clearly he could model. "Pfft, I know better than to get into an argument that just ends up with me complimenting you over and over again." And Lena had several numbers on speed dial she could send a photo to right now and he'd have a gig in seconds to prove it. But the road she'd chosen wasn't for everyone.

"I missed you too, goofbag." Sincerity masked beneath a perfectly poised smile. Lena had unintentionally learned more about Hunter than most of the people she'd been born and raised with in Half Moon Bay. A random person that showed up in her life one day and from then on he was just Hunter. Someone that meant more to her than even she could possibly realize and hadn't regretted a thing about their time spent together. There were times she wondered what it would've been like if she hadn't left. If they might've eventually been something or if she would've been one to fall in with the broken hearts club watching her two friends run off into the sunset. The latter sounded better after all.

At his question, she offered a lackadaisical grin. "Isn't it always better not knowing when I'll leave? Doesn't it just make you want to soak up every second with me that you can?" But Lena shrugged, unsure of an exact date or length of time. Something was compelling her to stay. "Might be permanent this time, who knows~?" What did he think of that?

"I know you know I don't know what that word means." Hunter said, getting twisted up in his words as he spoke. Always making a mess of something simple. It was the way he was and years of living among the high and mighty folks of Half Moon Bay hadn't changed that. Hunter would always be that same scared little boy who had first showed up in town in his cowboy boots and levi jeans looking woefully out of place until people like Lena and Ben found him and saved him from being left out of the world.

His face brightened at her response and Hunter stopped and looked down at her for a second. "You serious?" He had missed Lena but more than that he really needed his friend back. With the way he was feeling after seeing Camila the other day, he really needed her right now. There was a lot running through his head and Lena was someone who always talked sense into him. "Don't you tease me Lena Kaplan if you're stickin' around for good I'm gonna kiss you right now I swear to god."

Camila was happy in life... or at least partly. The issue was that this wasn't the life that she had originally envisioned for herself, being a single mother who was still in love with an ex who had broken her heart on more than one occasion. However despite it not being what she had wanted for herself she still loved her son with all of her being, even on the hard days.

It was a relief to hear that Hunter was attempting to get his shit together, it gave her a little glimmer of hope that in all honesty she knew that she had no business having. Even if the man wasn't with her she still wanted the best for him. Selfishly she wished that she had been someone the man wanted to change for but that hadn't been the case. However she didn't entirely blame the man for the collapse of their relationship. She knew that he had loved her he just wasn't capable of loving only her at the time... something that no matter how hard she had tried, she couldn't be content with.

Camila caught the older males looks at their son on occasion. She couldn't help but wonder where his mind was at in the moment. Could he tell at first glance that Elijah was his? She knew that Lalita had picked up on the similarity between the two the moment she had met the boy, although she had never come right out and said so. "I'm glad to hear that your life has become boring... that's a new look for you." She joked.

"Well hey now, I never said it was boring." Hunter chuckled and folded his arms over his chest, leaning back and hoping that she was checking out his biceps, at least a little. "I'm just really hoping to grow up more every day and try to be someone I can be proud of. I ain't done much right in my life and I wanna change that. I don't wanna be the guy who fucks up everything he touches." He immediately caught the swear word coming out of his mouth and glanced to the kid who didn't seem to be paying attention. He hoped. "Sorry..." He smiled sheepishly.

It was hard to look at her right now and not feel like she was the one who got away. Because she was. Camila had been all he ever wanted but there was nothing in him that could do it right. Hunter had no example of love to look at and understand. His family was a wreck and Camila had known that from the start. The day he told her that she couldn't meet his mama cause she wasn't around and he hadn't seen his dad in twenty years it was clear that nothing in Hunter's life was normal. "Look Cami..." The way her nickname sounded on his lips was so familiar, he missed it. "I know you should hate me. And I hope you spent some of the last three years doin' that cause I know I deserve it. But god damn it's good to see you again." He reached across the table and took her hand for a minute. "And I'm really glad you're doin' well."

I missed you. But those words didn't leave his heart this time.
