and what if you found one that looked exactly like him? you couldn't explain it, but the shape of its eyes reminded you so much of him, you had to bring it home. you'd tease him relentlessly about it whenever their moods seemed to match.
like when both of them would have their eyes narrowed in concentration as seonghwa worked out where to place the final lego piece in his newest set, and the cat seemed to be staring in suspense to witness the final result of two hours of hard work. it would just be sitting there the whole time, watching him. it was the only time either of you could get it to listen to you.
if they both made the most teary-eyed pleading faces at you? double the persuasive arsenal, they could convince you to do anything for them. not that you wouldn't give the world for them in the first place.
and coming home and finding seonghwa and the kitten curled up together taking a nap?? you literally have to take a step back and breathe to handle the cuteness overload without accidentally waking them up. without hesitation, you snap a picture of the sweet moment. your new lockscreen won't be changing anytime soon.

seonghwa glances over at you in the passenger seat, lips quirking up at the line of drool dripping down your chin. you were passed out from the long night drive, gently rocked by the motions of the car and the memories of the day you'd spent with him as the sun slipped below the horizon. the radio karaoke melting into lullabies and eventually fading into the irresistible darkness of sleep.
your lover fights a yawn himself as he pulls the car into the driveway. secretly, he'd been looking forward to this--to getting to carry you in from the car, tucking you in with him, and seeing you wake up the next morning with your eyes peeking out from the fluffy blanket. momentarily confused while you pieced together where you were, blushing when you realized that he'd carried you in.
but for now, he hooks his arms under you, making sure to support your head, and lifts you from the vehicle. a small smile crosses his face when his name sleepily escapes your lips, and the car beeps once as he shuts the door with his foot and locks it. seonghwa's eyes narrow in concentration as he tries to slide off his shoes and unlock the front door to your house, all while carrying you and attempting to hold the keys in a way that minimized their jangle. you let out another soft murmur and squeeze tighter around his chest as he steps inside, locking the door behind him.
"we're home, starlight." he whispers, climbing the stairs to the bedroom. your hum in reply is musical to him as he lowers you onto the bed, the mattress dipping as he takes a seat next to you. he closes his eyes and tips his head back for a moment, allowing himself to bask in the sound of your breathing and the familiar scent of the home you share.
honestly, seonghwa could listen to you and your voice forever. especially the sound of your words lulling him to sleep on too many nights when he’d stayed up stressing about how one or another of the members was pushing himself too hard lately:
“go to sleep, hwa. yeosang’s just trying to perfect the choreo, and he’ll need to shower anyway, so it’ll be a while before you can wish him good night.”
“i’m gonna scold him in the morning for staying up so late.”
“and i'll join you tomorrow. but close your eyes for now, you deserve the rest.” you'd roll towards him and smooth his hair out of his face. his eyes would slide closed, a smile replacing the concerned set of his mouth. so often did he have to watch over the rest of the boys, that it was a blessing to have someone to watch over him like you did.
seonghwa mirrors the motion now, moving your hair away from your eyelids. the touch makes them flutter, and he quickly removes his hands, careful not to wake you up. thankfully, you don't seem to stir. as quietly as possible, he shifts his legs onto the bed and pulls the blanket over the two of you, then places a kiss on your temple.
art student!hongjoong watercoloring you in his cold-pressed notebook while you pose for him on a stool in a dimly lit room. the only light source being the moonlight through the circular window in the ceiling that shines like a spotlight on your perch. he's getting a little frustrated, making tweaks to his work, wondering why he can't quite get your likeness right. maybe it's the lighting, or the anatomy, or even the medium itself?
he looks up to reference you again and notices you smiling encouragingly, despite sitting there in the same position for half an hour. the way your cheek twitches up with your expression. your eyes shifting colors as you blinked, going from their natural color to a vivid, iridescent version of it as the moonlight fell on them. the shimmering dust particles in the beam of light giving you an air of ethereal beauty, radiant against your dark surroundings.
thats when he realizes--there's no capturing the real thing.

- sweets! a special weakness of mine is sweets from the person saying the endearment's culture. like if someone who was also indian called me their kaju katli i'd melt (but probably not laddu unless it's clear they're teasing and i get back at them 💀). maybe runs the risk of being cringey tho? honestly as long as it's from the sayer's culture and suits their personality it's fine

there's no better feeling than seonghwa's fingertips on your scalp as he delicately combs an organic styling gel through your hair, still damp from the shower. you lay on your shared bed with your head in his lap while scrolling through the photos of today's beach date. you two had had a lot of fun splashing around in the water, eating colorful ice cream and taking pictures. but most importantly, you'd felt confident in your own skin for a change. desirable, even. like you were good enough to stand next to seonghwa and he'd feel proud of being with you.
but these pictures...you couldn't believe you'd walked around the whole day, in that outfit, letting yourself look like that in public. it made you feel sorry for your boyfriend. how could he be seen with someone who so distinctly contrasted him like this? you weren't sure if you were imagining it, but in retrospect, maybe you were too distracted to hear the whispers of the other people at the beach. whispers that people like you shouldn't bother wearing something as bold as a swimsuit, even if it could be considered modest for one. that the man next to you was gorgeous, and was he single? and when he held your face in his hands and kissed you, you knew that all that was on their minds, and all you could think about now, was that he could do so much better.
"oh, my angel, come here." seonghwa's voice breaks through the fog of your thoughts, and you realize too late that you've said them aloud. he pulls you into a sitting position in his lap and rests his chin on your shoulder, your back to his chest. his hand continues to run through your hair, coating each strand with the product. "i don't want you to believe for one second that i could choose anyone over you," he says, closing his eyes and filling his lungs with the scent of your conditioner. "i couldn't settle for anything less."
seonghwa gently turns your head towards him and presses a kiss on the tip of your nose, his eyes twinkling at the flush rising to your cheeks. "every part of you is so beautiful," he whispers, letting his eyes roam across your face in awe, leaving no square inch neglected. "each wrinkle that appears when you smile, every hair on your skin. the way both of your hands disappear inside mine. but i especially love your ears--" he pauses to peck at the now bright red one closest to him, "--they're so expressive." pleased with himself, he leans back to admire his handiwork: the blushing mess he turned you into in under a minute.
still, you can't dismiss the doubt buried deep in your mind. even though seonghwa would never lie to you, this isn't just something you can believe that easily. despite years of your friends telling you that you looked absolutely stunning in your sweatpants and hoodies and months of your boyfriend being utterly unable to take his eyes off you, you never seemed to be able to view yourself that way. said boyfriend, however, isn't done.
"my favorite part of the day," he continues while smoothing the gel through your hair, "is just before i fall asleep. because i love seeing the worry on your face gradually be replaced by the peaceful expression you get when you rest. and each morning when i wake up to your adorable messy hair tickling my chin, i'm reminded of how grateful i am to be a part of your life." he buries his face into your neck and playfully nuzzles you, his nose tickling right below your ear. you have to stifle your laughter despite yourself.
"and beyond that, you're not just enough for me." your lifeline lifts his head to take in the full view of your face, before locking eyes with you. you almost look away at the sudden intensity of his gaze, but manage to hold on. "you're more than i've ever dreamed of, and you make every single day better just by being here with me. and it breaks my heart that you don't feel proud of yourself for that."
placing his clean hand over your own that's holding the phone, he scrolls to a picture he took of you smiling at an approaching sea turtle. it's a candid photo, and you remember that it was moments before you noticed him with your phone's camera pointed at you, safe in its waterproof sheath. by reflex, you'd shoved a mighty amount of seawater at the offending lenses. shrieking and laughing, seonghwa had half-run, half-swam back to shore, tossed your phone in its protective covering into your beach bag, and promptly returned to kick up a tidal wave into your face in retaliation. your lips naturally curve up at the memory.
"do you see that smile?" he points to the photo, then pokes your cheek when he sees the expression mirrored on your face. "be careful with it, because it's powerful. it can light up the darkest corners of the world and turn anyone's stressful day around in a second. trust me, i know firsthand." you blush again as seonghwa wipes away the last of the gel into his own drying hair and cups your face in his palms. your eyes slide closed, relaxing into his touch and breathing in the fresh scent of the product on his hands. "and as the one responsible for that smile, it hurts so much to see someone take it away. especially when it's someone who doesn't deserve to witness it in the first place." he kisses each of your eyelids, then your cheekbones, then after a nod from you, he presses a sweet kiss on your lips.
"and i will always, always be proud of being yours," he whispers against the upturned corners of your mouth.

you decided to follow hongjoong into the studio today. he'd promised to take you on a tour recently, and you were curious about the place where he spent so many of his waking (and what should've been his sleeping) hours. you both have an insightful conversation with the edenary team about what it's like to be a professional producer, since writing and producing music had once been a hobby of yours and you were familiar with some of the equipment and techniques, impressing hongjoong. he knew you'd made a couple songs but didn't really know how much you were interested in this. also, he hadn't pushed you about those songs because he was afraid they might be too personal to you. he knew from firsthand experience how making music could be a deeply emotional experience, and that those songs were the result of many nights spent aching alone in your room years ago. but after your studio date, he decides to take a risk:

the skate park is completely empty at this time, and you watch in awe as yeosang pulls tricks that make it seem like he's flying against the backdrop of stars. out here, he seems to release all his worries to the cool night breeze, his concentration fully on his feet, the rises and dips in the concrete, and the board he's trusting his life to between them.
unnoticed, you slip away to the fried chicken shop a couple blocks from the park, knowing the owners will greet you with a meaningful smile as you and yeosang had come here countless times before. tonight, however, the restaurant is packed with students enjoying some fast food for a weeknight dinner, and you want to save yeosang the trouble.
when he sees you returning with the chicken, the corners of his mouth immediately pull upward and he almost looks like he's holding back tears. he holds it inside, but he wants to thank you for everything, for noticing how he felt today, for offering to come to the skate park with him, for knowing what he needed without him having to ask, because you know he would never want to put anything on your shoulders. but you don't need all of those words to understand, so he doesn't say all of that, because you already know. and for that, he will forever be grateful.
