zayne stares at the words he typed out. he doesn't have the courage to even send a simple apology to his daughter. ivy had stormed off their house during a heated argument with her father. zayne stares at his daughter's messy room– how the clothes lay on the floor, crumpled and sprawled out. how her report card is ripped.
he feels a small knot form in his stomach. its not good, of course. he slowly sits on the edge of his daughter's bed.
zayne had came off as harsh to ivy when confronted about her academic performance. it had a sharp decline ever since she began in a much advanced class– as a daughter of a well known surgeon, the pressure is on her to continue the legacy of zayne, her father.
she didn't even wanted to become a doctor in the first place!
"dad! give me a break and let me live like a normal sixteen year old!" ivy argued. she'd then say, "this is stupid! you don't even know what i'm going through– you're barely even there!"
zayne starts to regret everything he said. zayne starts to regret he even pressured her in the first place. he knows his daughter would come home, she just needs time. while he waits, he tidies ivy's room- a small gesture that signifies he's sorry.
while cleaning up her mess, zayne notices quite a few folded stacks of paper that fell. he got curious and slowly unfolded the paper.
some of the notes date a few years ago to the present.
i love my dad.
the first line read, zayne continued
but he's barely even there–
a pause. it felt like a sharp stab in his heart when he read ivy's note.
i don't think dad cares enough about what i'm going through. i don't think he cares enough to even know how i feel with my performance. i don't even want to be a doctor– i want to pursue arts.
zayne sees another note, that dates back a few years back read:
daddy doesn't come home early. i'm scared.
he inhales shakily 'she was still a kid here', he talks to himself as tears formed
i love my daddy but daddy sometimes i feel like he doesn't love me.
i feel like dad doesn't love me
i don't think he notices me–
it was a constant theme in her entries. tears slowly fell. he suddenly freezes when he hears the door open. he looks up, he sees ivy at the door fo her bedroom.
ivy is surprised zayne got a hold of the papers. this riles her anger at her father more "what- dad why are you reading that-" she hastily approaches zayne and grabs the paper. "ivy- let's talk." zayne finally reaches out to her arm. at first, ivy is stunned. she hasn't seen her father's face in tears.
eventually, she obeys his signal to talk. ivy sits down beside him. ivy just avoids his gaze, fiddling with the paper that she grabbed from zayne "what is it, dad?" she asks flatly.
"i'm sorry." zayne blurts out. ivy looks at him, finally looking– zayne feels relieved. zayne looks out the window, the moonlight embraces them entirely, the dim lighting of ivy's lamp amplifies the atmosphere even more. "its my first time being a father– i never knew how much you felt this way."
ivy wanted to break. her eyes welled up "your first time?" she repeats "but dad, i didn't ask to be born." ivy is trying her best to remain calm and composed "i know, mom isn't around anymore and its hard. but you've had her your whole life before me. i never even had her."
zayne stared intently at his daughter. oh he notices her tears that start to subtly fall down.
"i'm trying to be patient because maybe yeah- it is hard. but dad, i'm your daughter. i don't want to beg for your attention. i don't wanna stand in the back hoping you'd just notice me." ivy sniffled as tears started to pour. "i don't have a mother present, then you barely know what i'm going through. just because its your 'first time'?"
ivy was pouring her all. zayne could only listen and feel his tears drop. "it hurts me because– my dad puts so much pressure on me to be someone like him but i'm not you. it hurts so much–" ivy chokes on her tears "i didn't want a doctor who just checks up on me, i wanted my father. my dad."
"i just wished i get hurt or sick, that way i'll be your patient and you would notice me– you'd take care of me–"
"no don't say that." zayne quietly says through his tears and pulls ivy in his embrace. "i don't want you hurt." he adds. ivy breaks down once and for all. letting every tear out, every struggle out. "i'm so sorry– i just thought i was doing the right thing." he sniffles and kisses the top of ivy's head.
zayne holds her like how he held her for the very first time. he holds her steadily like how he had to let ivy stay still to fix her long tangled her, he whispered softly like how he'd attempt to lull her to bed.
ivy always remained zayne's daughter– but because zayne was clueless, he didn't know what to do when ivy continued to grow. he thought, breeding ivy into a surgeon like him was the right thing to do. he thought making himself busier and distant just to support ivy was the right decision.
"i wanted you to continue my practice because i thought that it would secure your future." zayne attempts to make his words coherent enough even if he's trying not to sob right now. "i was scared– i'd leave you with nothing." he explains further. ivy just listens as she cries in her father's arms.
he pulls her away for a moment to wipe her tears "your mother would be so angry at how much i've hurt you right now." zayne states "but she would be so proud at you. she would." zayne's tears fell heavier and heavier.
"i love you, ivy. i don't want to lose you because i was clueless."
that broke ivy entirely. she couldn't form a reply because she buried herself in her father's arms– like she was a kid again embracing her father after she got a boo-boo.
"i want you to have all the good things in life, my dear. please forgive me– i thought i was doing the right thing."
ivy just nods in between her sobs. zayne lets her cry it out and vent her frustrations that she kept to herself all these years. when ivy was able to regulate herself for a bit, zayne finally lets her look at him.
he wipes her tears "don't be afraid to tell me what hurts, understood? if you feel sad, angry, if there's anything painful, or if you just want to chat– you know i'm always here." zayne softly says now, his voice soft and reassuring.
"i want to learn how to love my daughter properly." he says quietly with strong intent. "i lost your mother and i don't want to lose you too."
ivy nodded and watched zayne's small tears fall slowly. fortunately, it subsided moments later when they communicated what happened and "talked things out".
"maybe i should sleep beside you just like how i did before you grew up." zayne attempted to lighten the mood. ivy looked at him with faux disgust, "ew dad!"
their voices were a bit nasally from crying and that's what made it funnier for the both of them.
zayne play frowns "has my daughter outgrown her father's night time embrace?" ivy does the same expression– "dad, no!" she starts to stand up, getting ready to be chased "i'm finishing all the dinner if you cuddle me!" she exclaims. "oh no you won't!" zayne retaliates by chasing her across the room.
both father and daughter chase each other down the kitchen. it was lighthearted, it was warm– it felt so familiar. it was as if ivy was still zayne's baby girl and of course, she still is.
this time, there was hope in their relationship. there was hope that zayne could mend it again, he could finally be the father ivy deserves.

Zayne’s evol hadn’t acted up in a long time. At least not since before your daughter was born. It’s why this moment is so terrifying.
“Papa?” Just barely aware of what’s going on, she rises on unsteady feet and begins to make her way over. Fear clenches around Zayne’s heart, crawling up his throat and preventing him from speaking.
Black ice coats his hands and crawls up with forearms. He tries to turn away from his daughter’s small, fragile form. But it’s too late, and a little hand rests on his shoulder.
“Papa? Don’t cry papa.” She peers over his shoulder, trying to see his face and what’s going on. He clenches his fist, doing everything in his power to keep the ice at bay. He wishes you were here, with your calming presence and evol capable of healing him.
“I help!” She presses both hands to his arm, but before he can get her to move away, he feels it.
A warm feeling begins to encompass him, the light of a resonance evol illuminating the room as the ice slowly begins to recede. He looks over in amazement, the concentrated look on her toddler face so similar to your own.
“Papa better?” Her eyes are wide, completely innocent to what has just occurred.
“Y-yes. Yes sweetheart. I’m better.” He hesitates for a moment, then slowly reaches out to pull her into a hug, kissing her cheek. She giggles, patting his back with her little hand.
“Papa silly!” She laughs as Zayne releases her, unable to resist tickling her to hear her laughter. The fear in his heart quickly dissipates at the sound.
It’s a laugh just like yours, and it’s the best sound in the world.
i am typically not one for shoujos, and romance less, but my little sister has been watching “my happy marriage” in the living room and i will say that i am invested. yes girl become the super cool dream maiden thingy and save japan AND get your absolute snack of a military husband
