It began during my teaching years
Stuck in an endless cycle of grading and speaking
Following the path carefully set by those before me
But when the students arrive
Their shrill voices would cut through the tranquility of my classroom.
I found myself looking forward to their arrival
My routine, broken by this new element
A wonderful change to my days
Until the most recent group.
Josh was his name, a thorn in my side
Sticking his nose into my folders and pushing my buttons
He shoved kids around and tugged on their hair
But his parents didn't heed my words
Because he was their Angel.
His parents brought up their concerns, and then something changed
Suddenly I was pulled away from my class, my students
Replaced by a new face, a brighter smile
Word spread of atrocities I would never commit
Of pain I would never wish for any being.
I pleaded to my family, I cried for a semblance of mercy
I was alone, stuck in the only place that would accept me
Nostrum, Their name was, Their touch a soothing balm
They held me together, kept my mind from racing away
Their voice whispered sweet nothing's into my ear
Making me forget the wrongs that had been committed on me
With Nostrum, I felt like I could accomplish anything
Nostrum introduced me to magic, a new strand of Geometry
Perfectly Drawn Lines, Flawlessly Separated
Carefully Cut Lines, their spaces thinning
Messily Distributed Lines, their forms losing shape
Scratches upon the wood, with no end in sight.
He held my head in His hands, wiped away my tears
And I felt safe in His arms, like nothing could hurt me
But then He began to pull away
His gentle touch becoming less and less frequent
Expand
I clawed at my skin, the warmth of my essence seeping through
A perfect replacement for the love I once craved
I couldn't bear to be apart from Her
I was complaint, hanging onto Their every spoken word
I no longer flinched when they pierced my flesh, until I looked out the window
A man, a woman, maybe something in between
This version of me, this *angel* smiled and waved
Nostrum hated the thought
She berated me whenever I refused her new antidotes
She crashed through my ceiling, shattered all of my windows
She told me She loved me, but all I felt was fear
So I ran, I pushed Her away and bolted out the door.
The blinding light of the sun made me flinch, the chill of the air reaching my very bones
I could see the horror in the eyes of passers by, and I looked down at myself
What had I become? What had He done to me?
He promised me greatness, freedom, but I bare the scars of shackles, the bruises of chains
I can hear Him now, His voice filling my head with more empty vows that would never come to fruition.
So I kept running, kept stumbling, kept dragging my feet
I didn't heed the calls of those around me
Red and Blue lights flashed before me
The shrill call of sirens pierced my very skull
Even as a seating pain wracked through my body
Even when my limbs begged for a semblance of mercy
For I knew that when I collapsed, They would descend upon my weak form
Like a Gaze of Raccoons upon a pitiful nest
People called to my, their voices familiar and yet oh so foreign
It was like a symphony as their utterances blended into one
The lights grew brighter around me, threatening to blind my drooping eyes
I saw my mother, her gaze filled with regret
I saw my father, his eyes holding nothing but self-loathing
I saw my boss, his mouth open in a silent cry
And I saw that boy, Josh, standing with my old classes, from my first to my last
He looked shaken, apologetic...**GUILTY**
Their voices seemed to cry louder, filled with desperation
But I could not understand what they were saying
The people who had all turned their backs on me were all here now
It is like they could finally see that Josh wasn't an angel
But instead it was I that had grown the wings
With a flourish, I spread my arms, a smile on my face
The clouds were here to accept me, to free me of Her
I take in the world around me
I take a moment to spread my wings, ready to soar through the skies
