How to make miniature dougnuts.
Polymer clay. Any brand will do. The colours I personally used were a chocolate brown, orange and sculpey living doll light. You can just use beige or a pale ivory colour if you want to skip the mixing step.
Sculpey “bake and bond” if you want opaque glazing. Translucent liquid clay if you want, obviously, translucent glazing.
Soft pastels. I used Brown, cream and orange.
IF YOU’RE USING TRANSLUCENT LIQUID CLAY, USE POWDERED FOOD COLOURING
Something you don’t mind getting sculpey bake and bond or liquid clay on. ((I used a bit of paint mixing paper))
a clean surface. You can use paper but I personally prefer a nonporous surface so I used a tile.
a toothbrush that you don’t use.
an oven (of course. PLEASE don’t microwave polymer clay)
a toothpick or something else you can use to mix.
something to shave off pastel with.
A small chisel tip brush.
Get a ball of clay that’s the colour you want the ring of your doughnut to be. I’ve got some chocolate brown, orange and living doll pale all mixed here. Don’t use too much brown or orange just use a little bit of brown to darken the living doll and a tiny bit of orange to make it more tan coloured. Knead those 3 colours together until it is no longer marbly.
Roll out your clay ball into a long saussage shape. Depending on how big or small you want your doughnut depends on how much clay you use and how long and thick you make the saussage.((teehee))
Bend the saussage around into a circle. It doesn’t have to be perfect. smooth the two ends of the saussage together to make the circle look more like a circle and less like a bendy saussage.
Texture the doughnut. Use a toothbrush and tap it against the doughnut so it looks rough and more like a doughnut, less like a circle of clay.
Get your pastels and mix them in a small bowl (I literally used a small bowl) or other container. Use equal parts dark brown and pale brown and a teeny tiny amount of orange so in the later steps it looks like the doughnut is cooked, not burnt.
Get your brush and dip it in the pastel dust, gently dabbing it onto the entire doughnut, including the hole in the middle. Do NOT worry if the texturing from the toothbrush goes, you can re-do this later.
Squirt out a lot of your liquid clay or bake and bond then shave some pastel dust of whatever colour you want your doughnut frosting to be (I used a bit too little at first) I personally used brown to make chocolate frosting. if you’re using lquid clay that’s translucent, use the powdered food colouring.
After you’ve got the pastel powder or food colouring powder on the liquid, mix it with a toothpick or whatever you want to mix it with.
Apply the mixed liquid clay or bake and bond to the top of the doughnut with a toothpick (I used a sculpting tool -o-). It’s okay if it dribbles into the middle or down the sides.
Bake in the oven at 150C for about 15 minutes. I also didn’t take a picture for this so here is a stock image of an oven.
If you used bake and bond, it’ll end up matte. If you’re okay with this, skip this step if not. do this step.
Apply glossy glaze to your doughnut’s glazing.
And…. YOU ARE DONE. Congrats! Have a doughnut!
