Anon I’ve been thinking about this ask all day giggling and kicking my feet n shit I was at work so I couldn’t answer until now, but I’m so glad that you asked!

I think that Rook has sort of always had eyes on both Leona and Vil from a distance right? Leona is the prince of Rook’s homeland and Vil is his favorite actor. The fact that he gets to go to school with both of them is a bit jarring—but Leona would never give Rook the time of day when Rook was in Savanaclaw. Rook was deeply lonely in Savanaclaw, did not have any friends, and was certainly not close to Leona although he made effort to be. Vil was a different story, obviously. The two fell in love during the winter of their first year, Rook transferred to Pomefiore, and the rest was history.
Vil and Leona did not start taking an interest in each other until Vil took up the position of Housewarden, which is probably about a year after Leona. At that point Vil and Leona are bickering constantly, always getting on each other’s nerves, at each other’s throats, but Rook knows there is something there. Leona doesn’t talk to anyone he thinks is beneath him, and although he’s obligated to work together to some extent with his fellow housewardens, he gives none of them the attention that he gives to Vil.
Two things are true at that point: that vil and rook had already discussed early on in their relationship that rook was polyamorous and that Vil was open to the idea of closed polyamorous relationships, but also that Leona had absolutely no interest in Rook. Rook still gives Vil permission to pursue Leona despite being slightly heartbroken about it because Rook is nothing if not self-sacrificial for his Queen. Rook is good at hiding his hurt and doesn’t talk about his negative emotions so Vil doesn’t notice it at first
Leona wants to have some kind of thing with Vil but doesn’t want to “share” with Rook and doesn’t want to commit to a relationship either. Vil and Leona establish a fwb situationship but Vil eventually draws the line and basically says “I’m fine screwing around, either we can make this official or I’m done, and rook and I are a packaged deal and I certainly won’t leave him for the likes of you”
Leona thinks on it, eventually acquiesces, and becomes Vil’s partner.
As metamours, Leona and Rook spend a lot more time together and although Leona kind of hates it at first, he slowly starts to realize that he and Rook have a lot of things in common. They both love reading, they both love playing chess, they are both intellectuals—but they are also both athletic, physically strong, and competitive. Rook challenges him in ways that are different from how Vil challenges him and Leona can’t help becoming attracted to it.
There’s no… confession of feelings, or even a real acknowledgment of the change in their relationship, at least on Leona’s part, but by the time they graduate it is clear to themselves and everyone around them that leorookvil are in a closed polyamorous relationship all with each other
I have headcanons about Leona’s relationship with his family playing into his relationship with Rook. It’s not that he’s ashamed of Rook himself but he’s ashamed of the relationship they have because maybe Leona’s parents are more conservative and wouldn’t approve of him having multiple partners. Falena would be fine with it but their relationship is so strained that Leona doesn’t want to talk about it. Neji knows from the beginning even though Leona doesn’t tell him and is constantly bugging Leona to come out with the truth before it bites him in the ass. Leona does not heed Neji’s words and for a long time, as far as Leona’s family is concerned, Vil is his partner and Rook is… Vil’s… other partner. Leona’s parents are not necessarily happy even with that arrangement and make Leona very aware of this fact.
Some time post-graduation Leona and Room have a breakup phase because Rook feels like Leona doesn’t actually love him, is ashamed of him, is only pretending to be with him for Vil’s sake, etc. It puts a huge strain on both Vil and Rook’s relationship and Vil and Leona’s relationship as Vil tries to defend Rook while also maintaining a relationship with both of them.
Leona notices rook’s absence in ways he never thought of before. It’s bad enough without his body asleep in the bed with him and vil at night, and even more so on nights where vil is sleeping with rook instead. But rook is quiet around him now. Rook’s voice was such a constant in his life that the house seems silent without Rook talking to him much throughout the day. It’s not like rook is ignoring him, but rook won’t initiate conversation, doesn’t use sweet pet names when calling for Leona, doesn’t make bright good morning comments, it’s painful to Leona how quiet he is. Leona knows it’s painful for Vil, too. No more late night chess games between the two of them. No more heated debates about a book they read together, where Leona comes away with a completely different opinion than he had before because of how passionate rook is about his own interpretation. No more little touches, gentle kisses, no more acts of service or small gifts, the things that rook did for him each and every day.
Leona is going fucking crazy but he KNOWS this is his fault and he hates admitting when he’s wrong and he hates talking about his feelings but what does he hate more? This agony of losing someone that he loves because of his own shortcomings. He misses Rook. He knows what he has to do, he just has to work up the courage to do it
Leona doesn’t plan dates. He’s never planned a date before. If rook or vil want to go on a date with him, they have to plan it. Rook and Leona don’t go on dates. So when Leona asks Rook to go on a date with him, Rook is shook to his core. He can’t believe it. Part of him feels like Leona is trying to make fun of him or something. But rook always sees the best in everyone, and despite how hurt he feels, he can’t bring himself to reject what is probably a deeply earnest attempt from Leona at working towards fixing their relationship. Leona plans a nice date. They go out to dinner together. They both get dressed up. They have small talk, and then some deeper conversations. Nothing about the two of them, not at this restaurant. Afterwards they go on a walk together. That’s when Leona apologizes for everything. He acknowledges being a shitty partner, he acknowledges not treating his relationship with rook the same way he treats his relationship with Vil. He says he misses Rook, that he loves Rook, and he wants to fix things.
In the end rook decides to give him another chance and they are able to sort of start their relationship over. It makes Leona a better partner not just to rook but also vil. The three of them come out of the challenge stronger than they were before. Leona takes time to come out to his family and it doesn’t go over well with his parents but Falena defends him—which ends up being an olive branch to start repairing their relationship as well.

This was inspired by the fact that rook hasn’t greeted me in game for over two weeks now and it was making me sad so my husband and I had to come up with an excuse as to why he’s been away
But anyways, about once a year, Rook feels the need to “become one with nature” and disappears for 1-2 weeks to accomplish this goal. Goes completely off-grid to some far away cabin, shack, or make-shift campsite and roughs it, completely disconnected from any technology and the outside world. The location changes pretty much every year, with some repeats.
He allows himself to use magic because he believes magic is intrinsically tied to nature but other than that he basically just uses his survival skills. He obviously packs a camping bag with emergency rations, first aid kit, camping supplies, and his hunting equipment. He has like flares and shit in case he gets lost. He also brings a diary and paper to sketch and paint on. He does a lot of self-reflection, a lot of sitting in silence with his thoughts, and a lot of writing about his experiences and drawing/painting things he sees in nature. He also hunts A LOT. He has learned how to preserve what he hunts from a young age so he ends up bringing back a decent amount of wild game and animal pelts that he’ll sell to Sam when he gets back, while he’s in school. After he graduates he’ll keep most of it for himself, will sometimes trade or sell the pelts if he has no use for them. Does a lot of foraging as well. Usually brings back random herbal tea mixtures and face scrubs and other things he has made for Vil from the wild plants that he finds.
While in school I think he typically does it during spring break because his family is never home so instead of going to visit them he just fucks off into the woods for a week. The first time it happens while he and Vil are dating, Vil freaks the fuck out because he has no idea where Rook is, what he’s doing, and Rook is not answering his phone. It… didn’t really occur to Rook to tell Vil where he was going. This is sort of… his alone time. Rook is typically a very clingy person and this is the only time all year that he wants to be by himself so he can reconnect with the beauty of nature. Vil was inconsolable. When Rook comes back he almost gets broken up with. After that, when Rook wants to go, from now on he will tell Vil the dates and his location but beyond that he is out of contact until he returns home
The first time Rook asks Vil to come with him is a really big deal. Vil has always known rook wants to be alone on his trips—so he knows how much it means to rook when rook asks him to come with him. Vil is not afraid of roughing it. He accepts the challenge eagerly. It changes their relationship forever. It is a deep act of intimacy for both of them and an experience Vil will never forget. He doesn’t go with rook every year after that, but Rook asks him more often than not.
The first time Leona gets asked to go is also a huge deal, as again, it symbolizes a huge step in their relationship that rook is inviting Leona to intrude upon something so sacred to him. But vil and Leona represent different parts of the nature that rook finds so beautiful. When vil comes with rook, he enjoys hiking, swimming, sitting on the beach by the lake, watching rook draw flowers and animals, cooking rook’s latest catch together… but he doesn’t like hunting, spelunking, white water rafting, or anything that rook does to seek out a thrill. For as lazy as Leona is, he prefers the adventurous activities. Taking this trip together is intense, and competitive, and intimate because of that. Rook and Leona are both the type of person who can reached into the water and catch a fish with their bare hands. They make a game out of hunting together. Both of them end up battered and beaten up by nature (and probably each other) by the end of it but neither of them have ever felt more alive before, or more in love
When both of them come with Rook, he gets to experience all that he sets out for with at least one of his partners by his side at all times. When Rook gets back from his trips, vil and Leona get to read the letters he wrote to them while he was gone, or even while they were gone together. Even Leona can’t help getting choked up by them. They are always filled with such raw emotion and neither of them can believe they deserve a partner as poetic, romantic, loving, and selfless as Rook is
I totally respect that you mostly ship f/f, so I'll phrase this question as not the best or the most likely, but "what do YOU, Ego, think, if Yana Toboso had a big red button to make exactly one ship canon, would be the funniest and would make the fandom the most in a tizzy" I choose Leona and Neige
bear with me here, because this actually ties into something else I've been thinking about: between the Knight, Leia, and Henrik, Silver is basically the last remaining heir to all the land the Silver Owls stole, yes? but what with all the global territory disputes and treaties and general drama, it'd probably just be a huge mess that would get tied up in red tape for centuries if he, you know, tried to just give it back. however, for times like this, there is the traditional solution...
what I'm saying is, 99% of Briar Valley's political issues could be instantly solved if Silver marries Maleficia.
