Here are three portrayals of Sauron at different stages of his life: once as Sauron, or Gorthaur, once as Annatar, and once as Zigur, although I am never quite sure which hair color I want to give him in the Zigur version.
Thinking about it again, it’s an older piece, and in a newer version I’d probably go with a darker shade of red for Zigur's hair.

Why Corellia? Because politics.
After having picked through all of Vowrawn’s dialogue, I think I’ve pinned down the actual reason the empire chose to invade a Core world despite the odds.
The Battle of Corellia was a military disaster for the Sith Empire. That goes without saying. The outcome was a temporary hold on the planet at the expense of a tenth of their forces and a good chunk of their resources.
But victory wasn’t the end game.
In fact, I believe the whole campaign only existed as a smokescreen for Sith politics.
I found out it wasn’t truly Darth Decimus leading the military campaign despite being in command of Imperial forces. It wasn’t Darth Baras despite being the head of Military Offense. It wasn’t Darth Ravage despite being the head of Expansion. It wasn’t even Darth Marr.
It was Darth Vowrawn.
That’s right. The head of the Sphere of Logistics and Productivity.
Yes, it’s true his sphere tends to overlap with military affairs… but to be given the full reins to this kind of operation when there were others more qualified? Hmm.
But Vowrawn is good at numbers. He’d have to be in his position for so long. So why was the Battle of Corellia going sideways? Why even choose that particular planet?
Now this is where I’m jumping to pure assumptions but I do believe Vowrawn deliberately set out a full-blown incursion knowing it would be met with Corellian resistance. In fact, I think he counted on it. It meant Baras would be forced to turn much of his attention to the battle because, lo and behold, the man is still in charge of the Sphere of Offense even as he claims to be the Voice.
With Baras distracted, Vowrawn is able to dismantle his power base on Corellia with far less trouble.
But why would Darth Decimus let Vowrawn overshadow him in this?
Decimus strikes me as a gloryhound in both his actions and his interactions. Then I remembered this little tidbit from the SWTOR Encyclopedia:
Vowrawn saw a man he could use as a patsy and installed him in the Dark Council so he could utilize him for this very purpose. Decimus owes him his seat and thus cannot object when Vowrawn comes knocking. Though I imagine Decimus doesn’t have much to complain about since Vowrawn gave him the chance in the spotlight while he works backstage.
Vowrawn deliberately put an incompetent military leader in command of Corellia so all his loud fumbling covered up his own motives.
Vowrawn weighed the loss of Imperial resources against the long-term consequences of Baras usurping power and decided, yes, the sacrifice was necessary.
Politics.
This man can’t be fixed. I can fuck him though. Maybe that will calm him down.

What makes Syanna an awesome Blood and Wine character
Ok so @mistress-light requested a post about Syanna and even though I wasn’t planning on writing one, I think it has to be done actually because CDPR did an AMAZING job writing another amazingly complex character and I feel like a lot of people don’t actually get her, or more precisely don’t want to get her.
One thing that I love about Blood and Wine is the cast of characters. All of them are very well written, including the villains. There is definitely no black and white in this DLC, no “big bad evil” you have to defeat. Syanna is basically the main villain of the DLC, the one that started all the troubles you are supposed to stop, the evil brain who manipulated the victim that Dettlaff is said to be. And yet in the end, the goal of the DLC is not to defeat her, not in the way video games usually do those sort of things anyway, Syanna’s character makes this DLC a lot more interesting with a story that goes way deeper than most video games and I really like it. But let’s talk about the character in itself.
Introducing the character What I think is very interesting is the way Syanna is introduced in the game. You hear all sort of things about her before even meeting her. First you hear about Dettlaff beloved, that mysterious human girl who made a vampire fall in love with her. Then you build with Regis that whole theory about some “bigger villain” than Dettlaff, manipulating him, planning murders, some kind of evil monster who needs to be stopped. And then Anna Henrietta talks about her sister, that troublesome, sometimes cruel but also lonely and sad kid that she still loves very much and misses a lot despite all the pranks and fighting they had. And then you actually meet her and understand that those three people are the same person and you have to reconcile those three pictures you had in mind. And during the brief time you get to meet with her, she actually shows both her bad side (still manipulating Dettlaff) and her good side (being willing to put herself in danger to save Beauclair). And here it gets very interesting. Because after having met her only once, and with all this mixed information you keep getting you now have to choose. You can choose to keep Syanna safely imprisoned somewhere and “play it safe”. If you pick that option you will not see her again before the very end of the game and you will have no opportunity whatsoever to get to know her better. Or…. Or you can risk it, choose to trust that she was genuinely willing to help and get her to Dettlaff. And then along the way you get to learn about her back story and who she really is.
A character full of contradictions So who is Syanna? Well, the people out there hating on her are not wrong actually. She is cruel and manipulative, she is a thief and a murderer. She is not a good person, and I won’t deny any of that. She manipulated Dettlaff, used him for her own purposes (whether or not she actually felt something for him at some point can be debated, I must admit I actually don’t know what to think about that), she planned several murders including the one of her own sister. All of that is true, and no good excuse can be found for any of it. Yet she still has a story that needs to be heard. Because she was born at the wrong moment, nobody ever trusted her, nobody ever gave her the benefit of the doubt and that includes her own parents. Yes apparently Syanna was not an easy child to raise (but hey, lots of people were a pain in the ass as kids, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are meant to be evil), but no one ever thought she could actually do something right. Usually when kids behave poorly, parents make them understand that it was wrong, and that they should be better. No one even bothered giving Syanna that. They just assumed that since she was cursed she was not even capable of being better. Just imagine for a couple of second growing up and only hearing that everything you do is wrong, and that it is actually normal because since you are cursed you will never be able to be anything else than a bad person anyway. Children are actually shaped by what people think of them, they build the way they see themselves from that. I can’t even begin to imagine the way Syanna must feel about herself and the way it must have been for her to grow up like that. But hey, her parents weren’t actually going to stop at that, were they? So they actually decided to banish her. To banish a child and let her try to survive by herself. Does that even seem ok to you? And then the supposedly honorable knights who were supposed to throw her out of her home, abused her. Saying all of it like that, I’m actually surprised that Syanna didn’t turn out to be a complete psychopath…
Once again it doesn’t mean that she is a good person, it doesn’t change the fact that she has done some serious shit. But she didn’t choose this. This comes from child abuse and destroying completely the life of a little girl… And I can’t help but feel sorry for her, I can’t help but feel the urge to help her, to save her from herself. And that’s even more true because she is actually not all evil either. There is something left of the innocent young girl she was once. Because yes, there is more about her in the DLC than just a sad story. There are also all the little things, all the clues and hints. The scars on her face. The way she talks about her family. The way she risked her whole plan by trying to steal some wine and a jewel because she just wants her life back. The way she clings to every happy memory from her childhood, to every little thing that ever made her happy. The way she will tell you that her favorite fairy tale growing up was the only one not involving a princess. The way she immediately accepts to risk her own life to save Beauclair. The way she decides to ride a unicorn and give it a name. The way she sometimes begins to open up to you and then suddenly remembers that she is supposed to be tough and cold and close up again. And most of all the way in which she is well aware of everything she did wrong (and even seems to regret it sincerely from time to time). There is this saying people use a lot : saying that bad people don’t even ask themselves if what they are doing is wrong or not. Well, it’s simplistic…. Yet it’s true in a way. Syanna knows very well the difference between right and wrong. And she doesn’t do bad things because she wants that kind of life, she does bad things because she thinks she has to, she thinks she was meant to, because she doesn’t believe she can be better than this.
Comparing Syanna to Yennefer There is another thing people hating on Syanna like to do, it’s comparing her to some other characters they actually hate as well. And well, CDPR did a great job and Syanna is a very unique character who isn’t actually like any other Witcher character. Still let’s talk about these comparisons. How many times already did I read that Syanna is like Yennefer? Too many times I guess. And well these two characters do have a lot in common. Difficult childhood and (very) bad parenting for a start. Learning to hide their emotions behind a cold mask and some sarcasm. A tendency to work better and “boss people around” when they are forced to cooperate. Getting their revenge at some point. But the comparison stops here. Because Syanna crossed a line Yennefer would never cross. One of the things I love so much about Yennefer is the fact that all the bad things that happened to her, all her suffering failed to break her. She is cold sometimes, but she still, despite of it all, has a golden heart, she is still a good person at heart, she didn’t let her past change her. Syanna on the other hand…. Syanna really was broken by what happened to her, she allowed it to change her. Maybe that’s because Yennefer actually had someone who believed in her at some point, Tissaia did raise her and love her. Syanna never had even that.
Comparing Syanna to Dettlaff Another thing that players apparently like to discuss is who is the most evil character between Syanna and Dettlaff, and who deserves to be saved in the end. And as it seems a lot of people consider Dettlaff the victim and Syanna the evil person who manipulated him. Which in a way is true. But you have to look past that here. Ok Dettlaff was manipulated. And I don’t blame him for killing four people to protect someone he loved, that I can understand (and well, as Regis stated, Geralt would have done the same for Yennefer). But what happened after that…. Losing it completely because he was betrayed and actually killing dozens of innocent people and trying to destroy an entire city… That is something far worse that what Syanna has done. Because yes ok, she killed people, but only the ones who hurt her. Another thing that makes Dettlaff far worse than Syanna in my opinion is the fact that he doesn’t acknowledge at all that what he is doing is wrong, the opposite actually. He actually thinks he is the victim in all that. Syanna is well aware of what she has become. Dettlaff just seems like a bomb waiting to go off to me. Like anything could trigger him again at any point. He is truly dangerous in my opinion and wouldn’t listen to reason ever, so yeah he has to be killed in the end, I couldn’t just let him go… Syanna….well I think Syanna could really redeem herself if she was given the chance, and more than that I think she wants to.
If I had to conclude this post, I would say that yes, Syanna did some very bad things, and yes she has to pay for what she has done. But she is also a victim. She is also aware that she did bad things. She is also willing to listen to reason, to reconsider, to forgive Anna. And most of all, she dreams of her old life back. I truly think that she is worth saving, that she deserves someone who for once would tell her that she is worth it, would take a chance on her, would take the risk to trust her, to believe that she can be a good person. I really think that she needs this and that it could change her for the better.
