Korean Through Games: Hongsam (홍삼)

This game (like a lot of Korean games) is played with the same beat as the Frying Pan game (lap clap right thumb left thumb)

Intro:

아싸 홍삼 에브리바디 홍삼! 🎵

아 lap 싸 clap 홍 right 삼 left 에브리 lap 바디 clap 홍 right 삼 left

아싸 | assa (general cheer)

홍삼 | red ginseng

에브리바디 | Korean pronunciation of everybody

Rules:

첫 번째로 시작한 사람은 “아싸~ 너! 너!” 라고 외치며 두 사람을 지목합니다

The first person to start yells, "Assa~ you! You!" and picks two people

지목을 당한 두 사람은 “아싸~ 너!”라고 외치며 각자 한 명씩 다른 사람을 선택합니다. 속도가 빠를수록 게임의 난이도는 높아지니 스피드를 점점 UP 시켜주세요~!

Those two chosen people yell, "Assa~ you!" and each choose a person. The faster the speed, the higher the level of difficulty, so slowly speed up how fast you go!

서로 다른 사람을 지목하다 두 사람이 한 사람을 동시에 지목했다면 지목 당한 사람이 “아싸~ 홍삼~!” 이라고 말하며 자신만의 제스처를 보여줍니다. 그럼 다른 사람들도 모두 함께 “에브리바디~ 홍삼~!” 이라고 외치며 제스처를 따라 해야 합니다.

If the two people both pick the same person, the chosen person has to say, "Assa hongsam!" while doing a gesture of their choosing. And everyone else has to follow by responding with "everybody hongsam!"

그리고 지목을 받은 사람이 다시 처음으로 돌아가 “아싸~ 너! 너!” 라고 외치며 두 명을 지목합니다. 

And the person who was chosen has to start over from the beginning with, "Assa~ you! You!" and pick two people.

*you lose by not responding/choosing someone after being pointed at. ( basically if you miss your turn, you lose)*

What politeness level do people use in YouTube videos?

Most, if not all, of the YouTubers I watch speak formally. That would be 존댓말 (~요, ~ㅂ니다). But it's also pretty common to hear the Extra Formal version where they use formal version of words (계시다 instead of 있다, 드시다 instead of 먹다)

Lost in Translation Storytime

I work at a high school and last week my students all had their government mandatory PE test. About half the school knows I know Korea, some assume I know some Korean, but a large chunk think I know like 5 words (which tbh is what I would prefer.)

Most of the kids who *know* I know Korean will usually still speak to me in English to practice/because they think it's fun. This one kid in particular picks up a ton of phrases from movies and tv and he uses them pretty naturally all the time...but immediately after will ask what it actually means (they're usually insults about other students or chill phrases like "no big d") ((the kid he insults is also his best friend and that friend is pretty much fluent in English))

Anyways, this one class is just over halfway done and 3 students come over to me with Boy Who Tries in front and Boy Who is Fluent and Different Boy behind him. BWT points to something behind me and said what I thought was "mouse." I mildly panic and let out a squeaky "paRdON?!" He then repeats and points again "mouse." I turn and there is nothing behind me.

I look to BWF behind him for help and his just says "He means zip." And I am still full confusion. "Zip! Zip!"

I turn again and BWT is directly pointing to the iced Americano I had behind me and he says the same thing again but this time I hear what he ACTUALLY said which was "one mouth."

Now this kid is 18 and flirty af so I come back yet again but stronger with a "PARDON?!" And then I realize BWF probably said "sip" not "zip" and BWT usually translates things literally and in Korean "one bite/sip" is "한입" which literally translates to "one mouth."

TL;DR I'm old and my hearing is awful. And while my students were supposed to be the ones exercising, I was the one that left with sore abs from laughing at my own dumb hearing.

Korean Through Food Reviews

The following reviews all come from 배달요기요 for a Korean restaurant that specializes in "lunch box" type meals.

맛도 괜찮고 양도 괜찮았어.. 배달만 쫌 더 빠르면 좋겠어요.

The flavor and amount were okay... I wish the delivery would come a bit faster.

김치찌개가 다른집보다 새콤달콤합니다.

고기는 생각보다 많지는 않아요.

Bonus: What I Ordered

소불고기도시락 - beef bulgogi lunch box.

10,000 won

Came with 4-5 반찬 (sides) plus kimchi and a bland soup thing

Meat itself was kept in tin foil to keep all the juices in

계란후라이- fried egg

Was still a bit runny on the yolk even though it was cooked then packaged then delivered 😍

스팸 1조각 - 1 slice of spam

1,500 won

Was packaged with the egg and fried nicely

분홍소세지 10개 - 10 pink sausages

2,500 won

I think they were fried and I think covered in egg. Hard to tell. Way too soft I didn't like it. Sad.

배달요금 - delivery fee

3,000 won.

A little on the higher range. But this place is tiny and a bit outside of Seoul and I'm lazy. A lot of places keep the delivery fees in the 1-4 thousand won range. Most places being free if they are chains or in Seoul.

My total was 17,000 won. Slightly expensive but tbh it was a lot of food and it came quickly. It counted as my lunch and dinner as I overestimated how hungry I was.

It also came in about 20 minutes. No complaints from me.

Oh hai

My life is slowly becoming less crazy (in terms of how overworked I am) so I'm hoping to be able to post more soon~ I have a few ideas of things I wanna work on but open to suggestions.

Also just found out this week that I work closely with a close family member of a kpop star that is seen as low key a sex symbol and nothing unattractifies a person than talking to one of the people that changed their diapers and shows you baby pictures. So thats my life now.

암튼, so this post isn't completely useless (also as a preview to post coming soon), "to change a diaper" is "기저귀를 갈다"

I realize I don't currently post very actively, but this is just a PSA that I won't post very often for a while. I work 60+ hours a week and it has physically, mentally, and emotionally drained me. This week is my last teaching for the semester before Summer break, so I'm going to attempt to use this time to heal so I can be a better teacher and overall person in the fall.

Cafe Drink Vocabulary

Cafes usually break their menu down by sections:

1) 커피/에스프레소 Coffee/Espresso

아메리카노 | americano

에스프레소 | espresso

카페라떼 | cafe latte

I'm going to go through the average conversation I have at a cafe here in Korea. Refer to Cafe Drink Vocabulary to say more specific drinks~

CUSTOMER: 네 안녕하세요 | Hello

BARISTA: 주문하시겠어요? | Are you ready to order?

CUSTOMER: ___ 한잔 주세요 | I'll have a ___.

네잔 | 4 cups (keep going like that with Native Korean numbers. After 4, you do not shorten the number)

썸 | someone you're "talking to" but not actually dating

모태솔로 | also seen as 모쏠, it's someone who has never dated anyone; forever alone

그린라이트 | green light; a sign someone is into you

금사빠 | someone who falls in love easily

금자감 | someone who is overly confident for no reason

바람둥이 / 선수 | a player (선수 also literally means athlete, but it's used as a player who dates around as well)

뇌섹[남/녀] | smart and sexy (more commonly guy with the 남, but you could say girl 녀)

공주병 / 왕자병 | princess/prince disease; someone who needs a lot of attention/acts like a princess/prince; spoiled brat (see: Regina George or every rich kid antagonist(or tbh rich male lead) in every drama ever)

알콩달콩 | super cute and sweet/lovey dovey

권태기 | ennui/the seven year itch; when a relationship becomes boring or drifts apart

삼각관계 | love triangle

노답 | (someone) who doesn't respond/when there's no real answer for a problem

반사 | the equivalent to "right back at you" or "I know you are but what am I;" usually used when someone insults you.

밀당 (하다) | short for "push and pull," kind of like playing hard to get sort of?

문자 씹다 | to ignore someone's text; ghost. You can also sometimes hear 씹다 by itself to mean the same thing.

바람 피다 | to cheat

Hello! So.. I am starting learning Korean and I don't know what 걸 means? What it is?

So I have another post recently (I'll try to find the link) about when it's used at the END of a sentence.

But most of the time, it's a contraction of 것을. 것 by itself means thing but it's usually a part of another grammar structure to make action and descriptive verbs into nouns. 을 is a particle that marks the (direct) object.

나는 수영하는 것을 좋아해 (I like swimming)

This is a regular, casual sentence with NO contractions.

난 수영하는 걸 좋아해

And this is the same sentence, just WITH contractions

Similarly, you may see 건 instead of 것은 or 게 instead of 것이. They are all the same "것" just serving different grammar purposes, which you will learn/see more as you study.
