I Didn't Kill Him...And Here's Why
I am a bright red Tiefling Assassin turned bounty hunter. I have a bloodline through Glasya allowing me to use the spell Disguise Self once a day. I had just recently returned from looting a huge load of gold and an heirloom dagger from the ex-husband of an elven woman I was sleeping with as my downtime activities for that week. The guards had knocked on my door stating that someone of my EXACT description was seen murdering the ex-husband. In order to get more information I decided the only logical thing….was to pretend I was drunk.
Guard: Can you account for your where about for the last two hours?
Me: No I cannot…cause I’ve been getting myself drink. Doonk. Drak?
Guard: We have an eye-witness that gave us an exact description of you having murdered an elven noble. Tell me do you know a Lunara Oakleaf?
Me: Oh my gods! Is she the one dead? Did she die? Oh gods you’re here to tell me she’s dead! *Collapses to the floor. Both in game and real life"
Guard: No! No, no. It was her husband that was killed.
Me: Oh him! That guys a prick…but he was an honest prick.Real shame that one.
Guard: We’ll….be in touch.
After they left, I inspected the dagger that was requested specifically by the Lunara for me to get and sure enough..I find blood against the hilt guard. I’ve been framed. Changing my shape to look like a different Tiefling of purple skin and horns. I begin my own investigation to find out what happened. I am immediately picked up by the same guard cause apparently…Tieflings are rare in this city. Now in custody I am in an interrogation room.
Guard: so…Who the hell are you. Cause I’ve only met one Tiefling…and he isn’t you.
Me: Are you sure? I drop the illusion, much to my DM’s and my party’s confusion
Guard: So now you can change how you look. Just what do you think you were doing?
Me: The woman is a friend of mine…a very, very close friend. And I wanted to help her.
Guard: So how is it that you are so collected now when not ten minutes ago you were completely drunk?
Me: I’m a Tielfing. My party is looking at me like I’m crazy.
Party Member (PM) 1: How does that answer the question?
Me: Tieflings are uncommon here and the guy has only met one other Tiefling. I’m banking on him not having a clue on how we consume alcohol.
The DM allowed me advantage on the Deception check. 18.
Guard: Fine then…but how do you explain the fact we have an eye witness that gives us a perfect description of you.
Me: First off, we both know you’re eye witness was Lunara, you know..the disgruntled ex-wife? And Two, the reason I couldn’t have killed him is easy….I’m an assassin.
PM1: Why would you say that in the middle of an interrogation!?
PM2: Are you trying to be sent to prison?!
Me: Me holding up my hand for a moment to speak. You see…I’m an assassin. Well…formerly an assassin. IF I had killed him…..you never would have found the body.
The table goes silent, jaws agape.
Me: In addition, as an assassin. There wouldn’t have been an eye witness, and on the chance that there was…you just saw me change my look. IF Ihad tried to kill him…I wouldn’t have done it looking like myself. And I have evidence…
Producing the note that the ex-wife had used to tell me she wanted the knife so I would have possession of it, as well as giving them the knife without any mention of reward. I returned home to my large king size bed without spending a single second in a cell.
And that is how you get out of being framed for murder…while telling everyone that you killed people for a living.
