how do y’all think haymitch felt when katniss came back to him all “i want wiress, beetee, and mags as allies” in catching fire? hand-picking his two and a half men(tors)!!
“of course you do” as his response now means so much more bc he’s not just exasperated he’s like “you really are me with a braid”
how dare you hide this gem in the replies 😭
That’s actually the best analysis I’ve ever seen of Haymitch and Katniss’s relationship. Katniss is unaware of everything between them. At the beginning of the trilogy, she thinks Haymitch is a drunk who’s going to send her to her death.
How might things have been different if she’d known how they were connected? If she’d known that Haymitch had loved her parents, but pushed them away for their safety?
Katniss knew that Haymitch was a drunk to protect himself from what happened in the games. But she didn’t learn what happened to the victors until it was too late.
Haymitch put himself in shape because he had tributes willing to fight. I don’t doubt that was part of it, but how much was it that her resemblance to Louella was so strong? How much was it that she was Burdock’s daughter? How much was it that she was Asterid’s youngest daughter’s only remaining parent? How much was it that her habit of speaking when she shouldn’t reminded him too much of Lenore Dove?
And maybe worst of all? How much was it that, in her will to survive, she’d raised her odds astronomically— and both Haymitch and the ghost of Wyatt Callow knew that.
