have been filming about a year’s worth of a daily publication the last couple of weeks and have only really been paying attention to the comics page. does tom batiuk ever stop alternating between the most meandering nothingburgers of plotlines and jacking himself off over the fact his comic isn’t funny, or

^ this was the string of comics that made me draft this post yesterday. obvious author-insert calmly and rationally defends himself against a complete strawman meant to represent his critics. this is apparently not the first or even the second time this exact scenario has shown up between crankshaft and funky winkerbean.

obviously comics don't have to be funny. i don't even think daily newspaper strips have to be funny. but in the approximately 200ish crankshaft strips i've read in the last week or two, it really does feel like batiuk keeps switching between thinking of funny strips as "lesser" and going "heh 😏 check out my d-tier wordplay... aren't i clever..."

most of the jokes in crankshaft are just “crankshaft said an idiom wrong. laugh” and he still seems to think of himself as a more intellectual cartoonist. you are not doonesbury. you are beetle bailey if there was a storyline about sarge getting diagnosed with prostate cancer.
