My latest little project
This is a credenza to go into my office, in place of an old Target piece of junk that is falling apart. The lighter wood is cherry, which will darken nicely to a rich reddish brown in a few years; the darker wood is eucalyptus veneer over cherry plywood. Finished with a hard wax oil.

I wonder about the emphasis on art here. I think its that kind of focus or interest in anything.
I was sort of thinking about it as like -- philosophy, math, comedy, etc are all "art" or at least can be looked at with an artistic mind, which I do think is necessary. You can be good at computer science but bad at hypnosis. But if you are able to look at computer science as an art, I think you have a better chance at it.
There is much truth in this, I can attest from personal experience with many hypnotists.

Holy crap, both of my books are in there. I'm frankly surprised, but at the same time not.
For books or knick knacks
My niece, who is 17, asked me to make her a book/knick knack shelf and sent me a picture from Amazon of what she wanted. I told her that was the most boring piece of crap I'd ever seen and offered to design something more interesting. This is the result. The wood is quarter sawn white oak, with a panel of gonco alves (a really nice Brazilian hardwood) for contrast and a splash of color. It slides back and forth to either conceal or expose the drawers. Through tenons make the sides more interesting, and (by her request) this will be hung on the wall with a French cleat rather than having legs.
The hardest thing I've done yet
This was a serious challenge.
I found out the hard way why chair making and furniture making are generally two separate forms of the craft, and two different types of woodworkers. Chairs are hard. Comfortable chairs are harder. Comfortable dining (or in this case kitchen) chairs are harder then easy chairs.
And I won't pretend that these are perfectly executed. Even in these photos a sharp eye can pick out the flaws. But if you step back and look at the totality of if, these are fine chairs and they're very comfortable. And they were well worth the 2 months I spent making them.
The wood is cherry with accents of Peruvian walnut, and the seats are 3-inch thick foam with muslin and wine red marine vinyl. It took careful hand tool work to fit the back slats to the rails and to taper the curved back legs.
It feels a little funny asking about wood working rather than hypnosis, but how complicated would you say the construction of the St. Andrews Cross was
As someone who hopes to have space for a little dungeon of their own, building the various furnishings appeals to me and seems like it might be thriftier.
It really wasn't bad. I made my life a little more difficult by making it knock-down; you wouldn't have to do that unless you wanted it to be. I used hardwoods on mine because they are much stronger, thinner, and lighter than the 2x4 or 2x6 stock most people use, but again if you don't plan on regularly taking it down and up you can simplify the design and use 2x6's.
The padded parts I outsourced, but I've learned a bit about basic upholstery since then and they're really not difficult. If you have access to a basic woodshop (tablesaw, drill press, a few clamps) you can do the woodworking in a weekend and then it's just making or outsourcing the padded part. All the hardware I got off Amazon.
I bought this person's plans (https://earthbonewoodworks.com/products/plans-for-saint-andrews-cross-with-cnc-files-attached) as a basis and then made changes to accommodate my needs.
Hiya, a meta/esoteric question for you: How much upkeep is there in maintaining your hypno certifications? As in, practise is the only way one stays good at any skill; but is there some kind of say, 'hypnotism theory bar exam' you need to resit every few years to keep saying you've a cert from xyz organisation? :o
Honestly, I am probably the worst person to ask as I did both my certs back pre-pandemi and haven't really updated them since. I try and keep an ear to the ground in case new research drops but honestly besides that as a kinky person trying to do this in a kinky way I'm not so sure.
But if anyone has leads on the answer let me know!
For what it's worth: there is no global certification body for hypnosis, and the actual rules vary widely depending on where you are in the world. It ranges from absolutely forbidden and possibly punishable by death to a true free-for-all where anything goes, and there's no real rhyme or reason to any of it. In places without a formal licensing requirement (which is most), you can fairly cheaply make up your own certification and it's as good as any other. The only thing that makes one more credible than another is social acceptance, which is usually just driven by what people have heard of positively.
Repairs needed!
I would almost always rather build something new than do repairs, even if I made the original. (This has a lot to do with how old the thing is and how well-made it was, frankly. If it's low-quality or I hate the design, I definitely don't want to revisit it.)
But this ... well, this was an exception. I got a call from a friend, call her E, who I'd given a gift when she had her son in 2020.
The kid is now 5 years old, and he loves this thing. Carries it around, uses it any time he needs to reach anything. He was very sad when the glue joints came loose on one side, but that wasn't all the damage by a long shot. Here's what it looked like when I saw it again last week:
(I had already sanded off some of the finish before taking this.) Two young dogs had gone through the chewing-on-everything phase and gnawed away all but one corner. Yes, the one side glue joints had failed, and the other side was pretty easy to separate with a rubber mallet and just a little force. It broke right at the glue lines, which is good in that there was no further damage but bad in that it proves I did a crappy job gluing it up originally.
So Step One was to trim away both outer edges far enough to remove the damaged corners, and glue on some fresh pieces of the same African mahogany I'd used originally -- sometimes it pays to hoard lumber cutoffs. (Rarely, if I'm honest, but sometimes.)
Step Two was to take the original template, which I still have, and use that to restore the original shape and the one lost handle to each piece. I ran the pieces through the planer just enough to true up the joints between old and new wood and to mostly remove the finish. I also scraped out the old glue from the mortises and off the seat so it wouldn't interfere with new glue.
Finally, I refinished the pieces and glued it back together with Thixso thickened epoxy, which is incredibly strong and gap filling (necessary because the joints were looser now). That sucker is never coming apart again. And the result looks like this:
I did take the precaution of using a hard wax oil finish instead of the original Arm-R-Seal. Just in case the dogs (or the kid) decides to chew on it again, this finish is far more food-safe. But hopefully that's behind them all at this point.

Just a prototype
Finished this today as a proof-of-concept piece. We'll sit with it (literally) in the kitchen for a few days to make sure there's no fatal flaw or discomfort in this design, and I'll get some more practice at upholstering chair seats (it's kinda like dungeon furniture, but more complicated), and then I'll make a set of four chairs out of cherry and walnut.
This one is poplar, which in its natural state is just plain ugly, so I painted it. It looks black in the photos, but it's actually emerald green. That's what the can says anyway.

You're going to create again. You're still an artist. You're still a writer. You're still home to the same passion you had before. You'll find it again. It's not gone. It's just resting. Let it rest. I was wondering if you were still doing certifications for hypnosis? If not do you have any recommendations for getting certified.
I'm all but retired from doing actual hypnotherapy these days, so I have stopped doing formal certification training. But unless you plan to actually practice vanilla hypnotherapy you don't really need a certification. You can learn a lot for free from cons, Discord, and listening to reputable hypnotists like LeeAllure, Secret Subject, UltraHypnosis, and the like.

I learned that method way back in junior high (this was 1976), on an (unmarked) manual typewriter. It was funny, because they determined in this test program that 7th grade was "too young" to learn touch typing, the kids didn't have their full coordination yet. Then, about 9th grade, it suddenly clicked and I was typing 140+ wpm accurately, which was a boon because I was working on the student newspaper and yearbook. I kept that speed up until my stroke in 2019; now I'm a lot slower and sloppier, though I manage pretty well.
Nowadays they probably don't even bother teaching typing because by the time the kids get out of middle school they have already developed keyboarding skills on their own. Unfortunately it's probably based on a tiny touch screen keyboard; they would probably benefit from a little "old school" training, too.
