soc fandom loves to make jesper the one bringing an over-anxious wylan back down to earth and ofc he does and i love it but we neeeeeed to remember it goes both ways. the first time they kissed it was wylan forcing jesper to slow down and breathe for a moment. it was wylan asking jesper what he's afraid of and trying to coax him into believing in himself. it was wylan stilling all the nervousness in jesper by kissing him. jesper was constantly putting all his excessive energy into things that gave him a thrill and the only thing that could make him calm him down the same way as using his literal magical powers did was kissing wylan van eck. do you understand.

i knowwww we're well past this by now and i know that i'm so super biased but i am still & forever thinking about how "he was just wylan van eck. he told them everything." is one of the most clever lines/plot twists from the series. wylan is kind of an unreliable narrator. his entire internal monologue up until this point has been brutally self-deprecating. every time he’s done something remotely heroic it’s been treated as a surprise, by both himself and everyone around him. his courage catches everyone off-guard. as much as he is vital to the mission he is constantly questioning whether or not he belongs there. but ALSO. he’s grown immensely over the course of the book. he’s earned respect and his place on the team. we’ve been shown his capacity and importance. we’re told over and over again to stop underestimating him. earlier in that very same chapter he talks about how being a crow has changed him. so whether or not you believe that he caves because he really is just wylan van eck depends entirely on whether you buy into all of that, on whether or not you as a reader will make the same mistake as everyone else, which is to think of him as less than he is. because he IS as strong and brave and willful as the other crows. he doesn’t need to be nina or matthias or inej or kaz or jesper, because he is wylan van eck. and if you get wylan you get it. and if you don’t he proves you wrong.

one of my favorite things about jesper is that he’s always willing to help out. in fact, he actively wants to help out. getting ready to defend inej in the very beginning of soc. offering to carry inej for kaz. helping colm with food/dishes when he came to visit. sewing extra padding into inej’s clothing. following his ma around the farm and helping with chores in a flashback. “i can read to him”. say what you will about him, but this boy is always doing his best to accommodate the people he loves and i love that about him so much
