Just a suggestion:

How can we translate the ff:

Stilt Houses? Coastal Houses? or Houses on Poles?

House is cöa, and I found quite a few options for stilt/pole/beam, so:

Rambicöar from ran "beam of wood" Panocöar from pano "piece of shaped wood, board, plank" Samnacöar / Þamnacöar from þamna "wooden post" Hanacöar from hana "post" Andulcöar from andul "long pole"

And for "Coastal Houses", you could either just keep it as a phrase like Falassië Cöar, or make a compound like Falassecöar "shore-houses" or Hrestacöar "beach-houses".

I originally wrote this one evening at the beginning of December 2022.

Informal translation notes which I apparently forgot to include:

I decided to fully translate Bethlehem (Hávacöa, House of Bread) rather than just adapting it phonetically, since "to Bethlehem" would be something like Vetelehemenna which is Too Many Syllables

I translated 'angels' as maiar with a lowercase m because Why Not and also that seems to be the only suitable word we have

I messed with the word order in the chorus a bit to keep the rhythm, so it says 'let us adore him, come' instead of the regular way around. And I got to use the special form for 'let us'!

Luckily Tolkien was a Nerd as well as Catholic and translated a bunch of Catholic prayers into his own made-up language, so we have words for Christ, Jesus, and a special assimilated form of 'in heaven' (Erumandë) that isn't too long for the line length

Also I used hröa for God's incarnation as fully Man. I just thought it was cool that I could use that very specific Elvish concept in this context

The etymology of ribo- is fairly arbitrary, so I kept it as is. You'd probably have to adapt the sounds though, so rimbo-? Maybe it comes from √RIM for "large number" because we have so much RNA. Who knows. Don't ask me to justify this joke post

Nucleus comes from the Latin for kernel, so P for poru

And A for acid becomes N for naxë

hello! i was wondering if you know anything about sindarazing quenya names? are there any rules or is any knowledge on that topic based only on observed patterns?

to be fair i was just wondering what would sindarized finwë look like. finu? fin????? sure, there is no need to sindarize finwë, but i think finu sounds funny. if you know anything about that i'd be really happy to hear it!!

Hi there! Sorry for the delay, I was travelling and then my computer died.

Unfortunately there isn't really a nice list of rules to follow for "Sindarizing" Quenya names. Even if you look at the published examples we have, some of them are based on older versions of the languages and were never updated by Tolkien, some of them are editorial decisions made by Christopher Tolkien that have more recent variants, and some are even erroneous in-universe because the Quenya-speaking Ñoldor came up with them before having a good grasp on Sindarin. Making Sindarin names involves paying attention to a lot of sound changes and obscure rules in the first place, even before factoring in a Quenya origin. Some of the attested Sindarin forms are assembled from the translated elements of the original name, sometimes they're derived from the same roots, sometimes they're only converted phonetically without paying attention to the exact meaning, and sometimes they're a mix of all three!

Tolkien himself happens to have given us the exact form Finwë would take in Sindarin though! You're correct both times: as an independent name it would be Finu, but within the names of his descendants it takes the form fin.

(Punctuation doesn't matter, and I can transliterate the text easily enough... it's for appropriately stupid reasons, I just want something plausible)

Sure! That's a pretty straightforward translation:

Nissi melir ni, lingwi þoryar ni.

And that's "woman" of any species, so Elf-, Dwarf-, and Man-ladies are all represented :)

could you please translate 'Retreat/Flee to Himring' or something thereabout? Thank you!

Sure! We have a few options for the verb in Quenya: ruc- "to flee", nan- "to retreat", or lerca- "to flee". Ruc- is the only one actually used in the way we want by Tolkien though, the others are more speculative.

I would render Sindarin Himring "Ever-cold" in Quenya as Oiringa.

So assuming this is a command I would say Rucá Oiringanna! using the most urgent form of the imperative. For the other verbs that would be Naná and Lercá. If you want to keep the place name recognizable you could even theoretically keep it in Sindarin but add the Quenya suffix to it: Rucá Himringenna! Fëanor mixed languages in his own name, so why can't we?

...Okay I'll admit I'm bending the rules mostly because I'm scared to attempt a Sindarin translation. From skimming the grammar and a few examples my best guess would be Drego na Chimring! but I've never been able to wrap my head around all the mutations so I would check with someone who's actually studied Sindarin on that one.

Sure, no problem!

Or actually yes minor problem, because as far as I'm aware there's no word for "how" in Quenya that's not in a question context. I do have some workarounds though:

Ela, olólietyë anhalla! Behold, you have become very tall!

Yé túra tárietya! What great height you have!

Both of these use the familiar you since the phrase seems like it would be spoken by an adult to a child they know. Personally I think the first option is better, since I'm not sure if yé can be used in front of a noun with a possessive as in the second one.

A couple different readings:

Lan nanyalvë síra yestalvë únutë i nyérë i untupilvë ve littë lanna cendelelvar. While we resist today we begin [to] untie the grief which we cover up like ash across our faces.

Lan naþilvë enar namoialvë tuvë i nyérë i lancantalvë calanna lanna cendelelvar. While we welcome tomorrow we labour [to] find the grief which we transform into light across our faces.

Notes: This was a bit of a tricky one so it took me a while 😅 I do not have the patience to go through every variation to see if they all work grammatically, but I did my best.

I used "tomorrow / today / yesterday" instead of "the future / the present / the past" because of those we only have a Quenya word for the past.

Other replacements due to lack of vocabulary: "struggle" with "work hard for, labour towards"; "unbraid" with "untie"; "shift to" with "transform into"; and "bury" with "cover up".

And then some of the lines are just split up differently because of Quenya grammar.

My beloved: melda ("beloved")+ nya ("my" as a suffic)

My beloathed: yelta- ("to loathe") + -ina (suffix for "object of the activity" more or less) + nya

I am perfectly normal about : "lai" ("very") + sanya ("normal") + pa ("about/concerning") + [here goes the thing you're normal about] + nányë ("I am", because "to be" gores usually to the end of the sentence)

Oh this is fun!

I wasn't sure about adding possessive suffixes to adjectives like that, but apparently there is precedent for it! (Meletyalda "your mighty", somewhat equivalent to "Your Highness") And it conveys the slightly irreverent Tumblr vibe well I think.

I think the past participle suffix -ina for yelta- is more likely to replace the final a and make yeltina rather than yeltaina, but there's no way to know for sure since we don't have any details on how yelta- is conjugated. This does helpfully remove one of the heavy syllables clustered near the end that make yeltainanya sound a bit awkward though: yeltinanya

As for the last one: "to be" only goes at the end when it doesn't have a subject suffix. Because it's "I am" in this case it has to stay at the beginning. Also the "pa" there should be pá.

So now you have: Nán(yë) lai þanya pá [...]. (The -yë of nányë and the þ rather than s are both optional)
