Katherine and Sarah's characters in ther respective versions of Newsies genuinely break my heart because they have so much potential that wasn't built on. Combine them, and it would be amazing.
There was no need for her to be wealthy, no need for her to be named after a little girl who died so young, no need for her to be a love interest, no need for her to be so "perfect" that she's hardly a person. (Let female characters have flaws)
She could have been like Nellie Bly, the working class journalist who refused to accept the suffering around her, who was hired by Joseph Pulitzer as a gimmick but took it as an opportunity. She went around the world in 72 days, mostly alone, just to prove she could and spent the vast majority of her life unmarried. There's a species of Ecuadorian tarantula named after her and when she was told it was too dangerous for a woman to go to Mexico alone, she brought along her mom and loudly criticized the government.
Why not that? Why not have a working class girl who refuses to stop fighting? Let Sarah be a writer. Let her have dreams while she works serving people like the Pulitzer's because there are no other jobs for women. Let her fight for those dreams and demand to be heard. Let her refuse to leave behind everyone who worked by her side.
Give me Annie Kelly, "brick of all women and most faithful of the strikers", the girl who, when the striking boys said it wouldn't be proper for them to fight the girls and women who scabbed, said "well, that's no problem for me" and the boys said "we'll be fine as long as Annie's on our side."
God, give me the working class, socialist, Jewish girl whose voice was cut out for time and a Disney message.

It makes me so sad that Disney's mascot is a mouse. I love mice. They are so good. Mice would never be capitalists.
