Obviously I’m in the minority about this, but I’d respect those arguing to re-open schools much more if there were fully honest about their argument:

If we reopen schools, some number of children will get sick, and some very small number of those will die.

We do not know exactly at what rates this risk exists, but they appear to be lower than the rates of infection and fatality for adults in the same conditions.

This risk is tolerably low when considering the additional independence it grants to working parents and the additional education it provides to children, compared with continued classes over Zoom.

“A tolerably-low number of children will be harmed by this policy” sounds far worse than “science shows sending kids to school poses zero harm at all, teacher’s unions are just being meanies!,” but at least it gets to the core of what we’re actually arguing about here
