Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
Okok, expanding on my ideas for Simon being found by Eridians and adopted by Adrian before Rocky and Grace make it back.
The Eridians are convinced that the mission to investigate the Astrophage immune star was a failure. Theirs no way the entire crew of 23 could survive for 50 years with only 20 years worth of provisions. The families of those who were lost see each other regularly in support groups. But Adrian stopped attending them when the focus had fully turned to acceptance of the crews death and grief counseling. Instead, Adrian throws themself even deeper into their work, refusing to give up hope they their mate will return.
Others Eridians pitied them. Such a shame, they would say, for such a strong and sturdy Eridian in their prime to be so deep in denial of the loss of their first love. Unable to face the reality around them and move on. Especially one with such a fondness for children.
Adrian pretends like they don’t hear the gossip, just as they pretend that their research of astrophage would find a solution to save their planet in time. Just as they pretended they weren’t so crushingly lonely.
But then! The submarine is discovered, and Simon along with it.
Adrian, as the lead scientist in astrophage, is put in charge of the strange creature they fished out of the astrophage infused ocean.
So many are disgusted by the leaking blob of raw flesh with Way too many orifices. But Adrian? They find it strangely cute in a way. It’s squishy flesh reminding them of a new hatchling, so soft and fragile, before they had even finished eating their eggshells to begin the hardening process.
The first weeks were the hardest. The small biome they managed to build around it wasn’t much, but it was the best they could do with what informations they had scavenged from the abandoned outpost. What mattered most was that the creature was breathing and their healing was steadily increasing. Next came trying to synthesize what nutrients the alien needed to survive while the creature itself remained unconscious. They took samples from the creature itself for this. Specifically from the parts of its body that were Not mutated.
Adrian was always close by to watch over their new charge, both in anticipation of the creatures awakening, and duty to keep them safe as they were so vulnerable. Until the day comes that their strange creatures twin ocular sensors open.
For Simon, it was waking up to even more horrors. His body feels wrong. The traumatic injuries he suffered are healed but the texture around the sealed wounds don’t feel like normal scaring. His arm is gone, and he can’t see.
As soon as he moved, the dark world around him had gone quiet… before exploding into a symphony of noise. He quickly assessed that he’s trapped in a dark sealed dome made of an unfamiliar material. He can hear the heavy grinding and skittering of stone and the strange musical notes just beyond the geometric walls. What ever is making that sound, there multiple of them, and they have him surrounded.
He had no idea where he was but he knew he was a prisoner yet again. The food gave it away. It was a salty chalky mush that was dropped into the dome in a sealed tube. It tasted awful, but he was too starved to care.
What follows is a long process of trial and error. Both with communication and trust.
Major steps would be realizing that Simon needs light, as well as trying to figure out how intelligent he is by giving him puzzles and instruments designed for him. Adrian is frustrated by how cautious the others are being, keeping him isolated and shooting down any suggestions of direct engagement with the creature.
Eventually Adrian has enough after sensing how distressed and frustrated their charge is clearly becoming. They put on the experimental protective suit and enter the biome at feeding time when all other Eridians are gone. (Too disgusted by the grotesque sounds it makes as it eats)
Simon had been waiting for the food tube to drop, when the panels of one wall opened for the first time. Any potential thought of escape dies when he sees the living boulder of swirling green stone enter his cell. It’s wearing a glass like suit of some kind and holding one of the food tubes in its claws.
With every step it takes toward him, Simon takes two back. Until the moving mountain stops, places the food tube in the center of the dome where it usually lands, then it retreats back towards the door and sits its heavy stone body down. Waiting.
Simons suspicions are finally confirmed, this is not the COI.
Language takes longer to establish between them. As Simon is very quiet early on due to all the fucking trauma. Adrian does not get to pick up the vocabulary patterns and repetition necessary to understand the language nearly as quickly as Rocky could with Grace, who never shut up.
Eventually, Adrian, and Adrian alone, earns Simon’s trust. He opens up more once he realizes the strange walking boulder truly wants to help him.
And then Adrian gets the news, a ships signal was picked up entering Erids solar system.
Rocky has returned to them! And he brought his own human friend who’s on the brink of death.
Mom was talking to my grandma and started telling her about how her friend's daughter didn't want children, that she'd rather not have any. Something really funny she said was, "That ungrateful b!tch. Who's going to take care of her when she's old?" I guess the ungrateful part was because she wasn't going to give her mother grandchildren.
Of course, I was there silently doing work and I thought, "Uhm... so that's what she thinks of me."
I've been telling her for years that I don't want children and that I'll have surgery when I get the chance.
I find it funny how these intro scenes are being kinda brushed aside with the overall conversation because not only do they give a good insight on where Adrien's head is at the moment, but they also set up the perfect tragedy of what his life will become once the secret comes out to everyone. He won't be able to have that simple life he wants anymore and everyone will always be aware of "Adrien Agreste son of international terrorist" all the fripplin time.
...Unless.... 👀 He takes Adrien Agreste out of the picture.... 👀 👀
I love my grandma very much, but sometimes she gets a little ankward because she says nice things like, "Good loves everyone, and we'll all go to heaven," and then she says things like, "Homosexuals are evil and will go to hell, and women who have abortions will also go to hell unless them pray for forgiveness." And I'm like, "Grandma, I love you. I know you're from a different time, but you just clarified the point of my fear of going to church because they are the most hateful people in the world. You just gave me the creeps, and I want to stop talking to you, but you're my only living grandma, and I don't want to upset my mom."
In those moments, I'm just say someting trying to talk about someting diferent like, "Grandma, how about we talk about that recipe you promised to tell me?"
My mom suggested paying for a singles convention for me, saying, "On this website, they say everyone finds their soulmate at this convention, so you can go." And I, panicking in aroace, said, "Yeah, Mom, I can try it, and you know what? When I get kidnapped, you'll be so happy." (I didn't tell her that, I just thought it, plus I can take some pictures and then go somewhere else; I guess it's a free travel at the end.)
(My mom doesn't know about the aroace part, so I think she just wants me to have a relationship, and I don't want to tell her because I know she'll just say, "You just haven't met someone special yet," and I'll say, "Yeah, I guess," just to cheer her up, so… yeah.)
I was watching Monster in Paris (for the umpteenth time) and I remembered the time I tried to recommend it to a "friend," and it was something like, "Look, this is my favorite movie, you should see it. It's really cute and has great music."
My friend, who only saw the promotional poster, said, "It looks like one of those cheap indie movies."
Me in silence really offended: "...your mom is cheap" (of course, I didn't tell him that, but I thought it XD).
Anyway, due to life circumstances (mostly because he was one of those who thought he was better than everyone else), he stopped being my friend.
(Anyway, why would you say that to someone who's just trying to share something they love with you? I guess because he was an idiot.)
Starting to think a cooler headcanon for Clark’s upbringing might just be that the entire town of Smallville collectively decided to just go with it and accept that Martha and John's kid has superpowers, but we don't talk about it.
Someone's tractor gets stuck and nothing can get it out? "Be a dear and run down to the Kents, would you? Ask for Clark?"
"Why Clark, we need a machine--"
"Run along now."
Or if he kicks too hard and the football vanishes into the upper stratosphere, no it didn't, we all collectively saw it land over there *vague hand movements*
I also like how this can mirror Bruce; Batman only lets a small handful of people in on his hero identity, but most of Gotham has no idea who he is... meanwhile, more than half of Smallville knows about the Kent boy, and they just keep quiet around a few folks they don't trust
When Superman starts showing up on the news all of smallville collectively smile and go and congratulate the Kent’s “you know Martha I just knew that boy of your’s would grow ta some good,” they have a potluck whenever he wins some big fight and are all holding their breath when he get hurt, also every single person in smallville will curse out Lex Luther on a whim,
Look, despite what some people might think, country folk aint stupid. Simple sometimes, sure, but not stupid. So when three events happened in quick succession, it wasn't hard to connect the dots.
First, there was the shooting star. Meteor. Meteorite. "That green blaze of light that went cross the sky screaming like a banshee's flute". Whatever you're going to call it. Anyone who was up at the time saw it. But nobody heard any sound of it hitting ground. And with all the fuss it was making, you'd figured you would. Everyone would've just figured it burnt itself up while stretching through the sky. Except.
Second, there were the very clean, well-groomed men in their suits and their near-identical close-cut haircuts who showed up within a few days. On their own or in pairs, just asking around in that sort of way that super serious people who are trying to be casual for the first time think is casual. Asking about if anything 'strange' had happened. Asking if anyone had talked about 'finding something'. Asking if anyone, or anything 'new' had shown up.
Aside from them, of course.
And despite what some people might think, patriotism and trust in government officials do not always go hand in hand. So everyone was degrees of blandly pleasant and polite to the men who were certainly not from the government and gave friendly non-answers before hurrying behind closed doors to gossip and compare notes and try to figure out exactly what they were all on about.
Third, the Kents had a baby. Martha was a skinny twig of a woman back then and certainly hadn't been anything but a skinny twig of a woman just the week before. And though the hair matched Johnathan's just dandy and the skin-tone was a perfect match for Martha, neither of them nor their kin ever had eyes of that perfect piercing blue.
It was an absolute delight of a baby, though. Martha and Johnathan were good people. However it was they'd gotten whatever it was they were calling their son, they'd manage it right. You could trust them with that sort of thing. You certainly couldn't trust some federal agency of serious be-suited men with identical haircuts and stiff awkward ways. Eventually, those men gave up finding whatever it was they were after and everyone breathed a sigh of relief and got on with their lives.
I mean, yes, the Kents were raising some sort of secret space baby, but aside from the initial flurry of community-wide confirmation of the fact, it really wasn't the sort of thing worthy of gossiping about. The McConnals had that daughter they'd brought home from Vietnam and it was mostly agreed that gossiping about that was poor manners, so why should the Kents' boy should be any different?
Then that was that, at least for a handful of years, till the Kent boy started attending school. He was a sweet kid, a kind kid. The Kents were raising up a good one, everyone could agree on that. And sure, he seemed to have an uncommonly keen ear and sharp eye, and was a hellion on the little league field, but you could chalk all that up to good genetics. And heck, everyone had been going along with the Kents' story so long it was easy to forget he weren't their actual blood. Not that that should matter much in any case.
By middle school, though, the happenings around the Kent boy were getting downright peculiar. The boy was fast, the boy was strong, the boy was tough. And not in the sort of way that made the high school coaches eagerly anticipate them entering freshman year, no. He was trying to hide it, 12 year olds aren't good at hiding normal things, let alone the fact that you tried to keep someone from getting run over by a thresher and wound up with mangled thresher blades, shredded school clothes, and an otherwise completely unharmed Kent boy looking abashed and trying to put together some excuse about a hidden rock getting in the gears or something.
But the kid was obviously mortified by the whole thing, so Dormick didn't push it. He did make a few comments to others though, and once people were looking, the Kent boy's uniqueness was plain to see.
The boy could outrace cars. He could pull tractors out of the muck all on his own. He could stand between a classmate and a thresher and the only thing that'd get wreaked was the thresher. Honestly, it would've been more than a little concerning to folk if it wasn't for the fact that the kid was just so dang nice. He was a good boy, kind, considerate. Any hint to him being, well, better was met with either embarrassed denial or fervent denial depending on how it'd been phrased. So instead of being the sort of thing that lead to muttering behind closed doors and maybe an eventual rousting of the whole family out of town, it instead just became a local secret. An open secret, but a secret.
There were still outsiders with short sharp haircuts and awkwardly stiff manner who'd come through from time to time and ask leading questions about whether there was anyone 'strange' in the community and very obviously trying to play off the assumption that they'd all be a bunch of bigoted fearful 'simple' folk.
There was no way in hell any of them were going to hand the Clark boy over to anyone like that.
It was when he was getting towards the end of high school and began talking about his plans of moving off to one of the big cities to pursue college and a career that folk begun to get worried. The cities weren't like Smallville in a lotta ways, and Clark was such a good decent boy. They worried.
It wasn't some sort of great plan. No one got together and came up with it. It was just a lot of people coming to the same decision in pretty much the same way, then others seeing what they were doing and deciding that they had the right of it and following course.
"That's a strong shake you got there." Mr. McCormick would say down at the store, feeling his bones grind against each other slightly, "You gotta watch that when you hit the city or everyone's gonna think you're one of those asshole highroller types who've always gotta be proving themselves top dog or something." Clark would apologize and start shaking more gently.
"Thanks Clark, that was right quick of you." old Ms. Narri would say when the boy arrived with her weekly groceries, running up so fast he's almost a blur until he slows down at the gate. "You should be careful with running that fast when you get to the city, though. Lotta more people out there, and none of them watching where they're going or what they're doing. We don't want you crashing into someone just cus they don't notice to get out of the way." Clark nodded with understanding and slowed himself down.
"Yer a lifesaver, kid." would say Lenny when Clark would haul a shipment of tractor parts into the shop. "Might want to avoid letting folks know you can do that up in the city, though. They'll think all those muscles left no room for your brain and instead of college, they'd have you lugging boxes at the docks till you go grey. Or spend all your time moving their fridges from apartment to apartment." Clark wasn't sure he fully believed that, but he was more careful about considering what he was about to lift and carry around.
And so on and so on. If they'd all known Clark had wanted to move out of Smallville from the beginning, they would've been coaching him all his life, but the two years of gently nudging the sweet kid on how best to pretend to be normal would have to be enough.
And, well, judging from what you can see on the TV or read in the Daily Planet (which now gets issues shipped out all the way to Smallville for the corner store because everyone loves their hometown celebrity), they must've done alright with it. They're real proud of their Clark. He's a good kid, his parents raised him right. (And while it's not right to brag, everyone does feel more than a smidge of pride at being able to help with it.)
And when any outsiders come through with pointed or leading questions, everyone will just smile blandly and have no idea what they could be getting at. Because honestly, anything beyond the fact he's a good kid who's done well is nobody's business but him and his, thank you very much.
Ok. Yep. I accept this. This is how it’s gonna be in my head now.
But let’s take it one step farther.
After Superman becomes a thing Smallville starts being a bit more…shall we say invested, in news from outside of town. Or at least from one specific big city. It starts with newspapers. Everyone and their mother now gets the Daily Planet delivered every day.
(Don’t ask how it gets to the local delivery boy every day. That’s not important).
They’re all a bit suspicious of this Lous Lane at first. Why does she keep needing rescuing? And why is she constantly writing about their sweet Kent boy?
That lasts all the way up until Clark starts to bring home his girlfriend/fiancé to meet people. They’re still not 100% sold on her of course, she’s still an Outsider, and a reporter at that. But she seems sweet enough. And it’s clear Clark is smitten.
Then the Justice League is formed. And if the residents of Smallville all start getting televisions with channels showing the more….international news (but only watch it when it involves the League). Well. That’s no one’s business but their own.
And while the residents of Smallville would never talk about it (outside of with each other of course) they are a bit…suspicious when the well known billionaire Bruce Wayne comes to visit their town. Especially when he doesn’t act like what they’ve seen in the news (Bruce is carefully in his Bruce persona, not Brucie. Or at least a mix thereof. He doesn’t want to insult Clark’s family after all).
They have even more questions when his kids (Damian and Tim) come to visit young Conner and Jon as the years go by.
And if they put two and two together by how close the respective supers are with their bats well…..no they didn’t.
(Am I saying that the population of Smallville might have at least some idea of who the bats are, but are keeping their collective mouths shut? Why yes. Yes I am. At least in worlds where Clark, Conner, and Jon learn who the bats are and bring them to visit).
Yesterday I remembered a very good fic with good omens but I have no idea the name of the author.
What I do remember is that there were several fanfics from the point of view of the inhabitants of Soho.
In fact, there was one in particular that involved two detectives confusing Aziraphel with "The Godfather" of Soho and Crowley with his henchman.
I also remember that it was in ao3 I was searching and trying to remember the name of the fanfic or the author but nothing :,3 I would be very grateful if anyone knows something about the fanfic.
I was doing the dishes and had a revelation. If you think about it carefully In the Beastars universe, the concept of a "zombie apocalypse" is actually possible because of rabies. (And then I thought: Why am I thinking that? I mean, dear brain, it's interesting, but why? XD)
I love, love, LOVE it when I can tell a fic author has integrated their specialized knowledge in a fic. I was reading a fic that at some point included the character going to visit an art therapist, and it's so clear that the author is an art therapist themself, and the details included are just immaculate and I love it. I've previously read about a character doing fencing for no other reason than the author clearly wanting to write a sport they understood. A character being given a hyperfixation on bugs just so the author can infodump themselves.
I eat it up every time, it brings such a smile to my face
fanfic writers are so fucking awesome in the sense that they can take one single scene, that lasts less than a minute, from the source material and turn that one single scene into a 40k word long fic with depth, feels, character study and development and create a whole storyline out of that one single canonical moment.
fanfic writers are so fucking awesome in the sense that they can take one single scene, that lasts less than a minute, from the source material and write 40 entirely different fics about that one single canonical moment and each one of those fics are literal masterpieces.
shout out to us fanfic writers ♡♡♡♡♡♡
