the past three years have brought so much loss. so much pain, for them all. not just for those who stayed on earth, but for those who left, those on the ark who knew they were the best hope for the human race to survive. diana never expected them to return, not while their earth was still as infected as it is. and she didn’t fault them for it, especially given it was her own choice to stay behind and do what she could for this earth.
she knew the next generation would do well, protecting their people. even if they were too young to have to do so. she had faith in them, in what they could achieve, in the peace they could bring when they found a new home.
but now… to see them again, diana’s overwhelmed with relief. to know that they’re here is to know they survived. they succeeded in a mission with so many unknowns.
she shouldn’t be out here, she knows. the risk is high, and if she were to become infected it would be a huge danger to the remaining population. but surely.. she can spare a few minutes. “damian -” she calls, moving faster than an average human would to the boy. though, he’s not.. quite a boy anymore, though. three years haven’t just allowed him to grow. she can see the weight of the suit he now wears, heavy on his shoulders as it had been on his father’s. the amazon doesn’t wait for confirmation, doesn’t bother holding for a response upon reaching him, she simply wraps her arms around him, giving him a hug she was sure she’d never have a chance to give him again. “it’s good to see you.” she says softly, letting out a breath she hadn’t realised she was holding. “we will need to retreat in a few minutes.” a few minutes is enough, though. for the time being.
coming back to earth, there was always the question of what they had missed, what they had yet to witness, and the losses that were more than likely to have occurred since they had left this planet behind. damian had never quite imagined that any of them would have ever returned. at least, not while the anti-life equation was still ravaging the planet they had once called home, those pain and memories just left in the wake of everything they had once known. for him, though, there had been no time to mourn. no time to grieve. carrying the legacy of his father had propelled him forward and damian had fallen into keeping himself busy with work.
now they were back, and there was another mission for him to put his full focus back onto. they needed to track cyborg down, learn the reasoning behind the sos and do whatever they could depending on what the message was. what damian hadn’t expected was to see a far too familiar figure rushing towards him faster than a normal human would, and before the young batman could say anything he was enveloped into a hug.
normally the contact would be unwanted, undesirable and damian would make it known rather violently. favorable contact and affection hadn’t been something he had grown up within the league, and the years he had spent in gotham had made it difficult for him to open up still. things changed, though. the world had changed. he understood now everything he had taken for granted and it made his heart ache. so he found himself wrapping his arms around the amazon in return, hugging her tight. damian had missed her -- missed so many people even if carrying on the legacy was necessary. “it’s -- good to see you as well, diana,” he finally managed to get out after a moment.
as much as damian wanted to stay in the moment, he knew how dangerous it was. especially for diana of all people. her falling to the anti-life equation would be disastrous. “understood. we should get to safety. there’s much to catch up on.”
