How to Plot a Complex Novel in One Day
Now first, I have to say, that the plot you’re able to come up with in one day is not going to be without its flaws, but coming up with it all at once, the entire story unfolds right in front of you and makes you want to keep going with it. So, where to begin?
What is your premise and basic plot? Pick your plot. I recommend just pulling one from this list. No plots are “original” so making yours interesting and complicated will easily distract from that fact, that and interesting characters. Characters will be something for you to work on another day, because this is plotting day. You’ll want the main plot to be fairly straight forward, because a confusing main plot will doom you if you want subplots.
Decide who the characters will be. They don’t have to have names at this point. You don’t even need to know who they are other than why they have to be in the story. The more characters there are the more complicated the plot will be. If you intend to have more than one subplot, then you’ll want more characters. Multiple interconnected subplots will give the illusion that the story is very complicated and will give the reader a lot of different things to look at at all times. It also gives you the chance to develop many side characters. The plot I worked out yesterday had 13 characters, all were necessary. Decide their “roles” don’t bother with much else. This seems shallow, but this is plot. Plot is shallow.
Now, decide what drives each character. Why specifically are they in this story? You can make this up. You don’t even know these characters yet. Just so long as everyone has their own motivations, you’re in the clear.
What aren’t these characters giving away right off the bat? Give them a secret! It doesn’t have to be something that they are actively lying about or trying to hide, just find something that perhaps ties them into the plot or subplot. This is a moment to dig into subplot. This does not need to be at all connected to their drive to be present in the story. Decide who is in love with who, what did this person do in the 70’s that’s coming back to bite them today, and what continues to haunt what-his-face to this very day. This is where you start to see the characters take shape. Don’t worry much about who they are or what they look like, just focus on what they’re doing to the story.
What is going to change these characters? Now this will take some thinking. Everyone wants at least a few of the characters to come out changed by the end of the story, so think, how will they be different as a result of the plot/subplot? It might not be plot that changes them, but if you have a lot of characters, a few changes that are worked into the bones of the plot might help you.
Now list out the major events of the novel with subplot in chronological order. This will be your timeline. Especially list the historical things that you want to exist in backstory. List everything you can think of. Think about where the story is going. At this point, you likely haven’t focused too much on the main plot, yeah, it’s there, but now really focus on the rising actions, how this main plot builds its conflict, then the climactic moment. Make sure you get all of that in there. This might take a few hours.
Decide where to start writing. This part will take a LOT of thinking. It’s hard! But now that you’ve got the timeline, pick an interesting point to begin at. Something with action. Something relevant. Preferably not at the beginning of your timeline - you want to have huge reveals later on where these important things that happened prior are exposed. This is the point where you think about what information should come out when. This will be a revision of your last list, except instead of being chronological, it exists to build tension.
Once you’ve gotten the second list done, you’ve got a plot. Does it need work? Probably. But with that said, at this point you probably have no idea who half your characters are. Save that for tomorrow, that too will be a lot of work.
Carrie Fisher and Daisy Ridley on the set of The Force Awakens
while we were all focusing on the muslim ban, trump took the opportunity to quietly remove the joint chiefs and director of Intelligence from the national security council and put steve bannon there instead [x]
for those unfamiliar with bannon, this is the neo-nazi who used to run breitbart, have previously said he wants to “destroy the state, bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment”, and could likely be the mind behind all of trump’s executive orders (including the muslim ban)
so to say this is scary would be an understatement
So, this is extremely important and mind bogglingly absurd.
WHAT you may ask is the National Security Council?
It’s a group formed in 1947 inside the US government to provide counsel to the President because the world is too complex to merely have the State Department provide all of the intel and major points of interest.
WHO is part of it traditionally? Well, consider, if you have a council made specifically to guide you in matters of national defense, domestic security, policy, economics, espionage, technology…etc etc you would have the heads of the major players. Like the Director of National Intelligence and the Director of the Joint Chief’s of Staff who in their turns represent our spies and our military respectively.
HOW has Trump altered this? He has in effect said that the National Security Council doesn’t need authorities from the various departments to help the President understand or provide their personal insight to decisions…instead they will be replaced in the NSC by Steve “Actual Nazi” Bannon and RNC chief Reince “Fucko” Priebus.
BUT WAIT…what about matters of national defense and espionage or counter intelligence? According to Der Fuhrer Bannon and Priebus will do the trick, since they clearly have spent so much time in the military and intelligence communities. If a really tough question comes up the traditional members of the council can be called, but hey, who needs those guys anyway, if they were actually important they’d be there right?
SO WHAT’S THAT MEAN? It means that the President’s foreign and domestic policy is basically guided by a Nazi and the head of the Republican National Convention. I don’t mean that lightly, imagine if you wanted to run a country and needed goals and guidelines for what you would do, you’d ask the heads of your governments various offices and groups to tell you what’s happening to make those decisions right? What the Piss Lord in Chief has done has said 'I don’t want to meet with them because I think the world is too complicated to be described by these types…instead I’ll have a Nazi news pundit, and the guy who directs the Republican party’s campaign finances to tell me how things should go and who I need to look out for.’
HOW’S IT GET WORSE? Oh yeah, this is kinda important, you see we used to have a system in place where the Pentagon, the Joint Chief’s of Staff, and the NSC all had to agree on when to target someone for killing, specifically for when a US citizen needed to be assassinated, those three groups had to agree that it should be done. Well…You see, Susan Rice under Bush, and continued under Obama created the Disposition Matrix, that streamlined the process. The argument was that things could move so rapidly that trying to get so many divisions of the government together to agree on a target was unfeasible, so let the NSC just decide unilaterally, since the Joint Chief’s of Staff are literally always part of it. EXCEPT MY FUCKOS that now the power to selectively assassinate any US citizen has been handed to the President, Steve ‘Sieg Heil’ Bannon, and Reince ‘Dumbass Name’ Priebus…and the Joint Chief’s are out of the picture.
Guess who just put a gun to the head of every American domestic and abroad? The President.
Anyone wanna guess how long before he decides that any dissent is considered an act of terrorism? Probably not long.
When exactly do we use the Disposition Matrix? When the President and the NSC want an American citizen dead for any reason?
So you maybe see where this can go? Right? I don’t need to go any further in explaining to you how fucked up it is that the NSC is now populated by the President and a Nazi as two thirds of its major decision making components.
“[Trump] said it would bring ‘a lot of efficiency and, I think, a lot of additional safety’” This is literally what Chancellor Palpatine said to justify granting himself emergency powers. “Oh it’s okay, it’s just for safety. I’ll put it back when we’re safe.” Soon there’ll be another domestic “terrorist” attack, just like the Reichstag fire, and we’ll see civil liberties shot out the window
I know all about waiting. For my family.
i’m loving all this violent response to nazis stuff that’s going around but i also want to say like be careful out there because not all nazis are fucking clowns like richard spencer. most of em carry weapons and will not hesitate to cut your ass up and leave you dying in a dumpster. if you don’t know how to fight, don’t take one on without backup. and even if you do know how to fight, watch yourself. i don’t want to see any of you getting killed
Irl these are the same ‘people’ who put up their shitty swastika stickers around towns and hide poisoned razor blades behind them so people cut themselves and get sick if they try to peel it off with their hands so don’t like underestimate what those animals are capable and what they’d be willing to do to you.
yo that reminds me to remind you never to peel off facist propaganda with your hands, that’s what your pocket knife/boxcutter/antifascism stickers are for. don’t trust facists please be safe.
Voiceover actor voice: Please punch Nazis responsibly.
This picture just screams “nigga move, I’ll do it.”
Yall don’t know how it feels to see a picture like this, when I can count the number of black women in my major on my hand. Like this is not a field they expect us to succeed in or want to learn. So to see THIS, all of these black women, confident in their own intelligence and the only ones who knew how to get shit done, it made me feel less alone
And for these to be actual women. LIKE ACTUAL WOMEN IN HISTORY WHO ARE STILL ALIVE 👏👏👏
yall seriously see this movie. this moment just…I was so proud of them
History repeats.
This isn’t even the HALF OF IT. Hitler, like Trump, was considered to be a total joke at first, and was thought to be unable to do any of his crazy policy initiatives. Both won their elections without most of the vote. Both pivoted to a less crazy political middle to gain more support after the election.
Never again is now.
Never again is now.
ICONIC
“Got the morbs” should be a thing.

“Bitch the pot” - Pour the tea (HOW RELEVANT IS THIS!?)
“Bang up the elephant” - Absolutely perfect; super stylish
“Well, that’s shot the bale” - Something that has missed the mark entirely
“Church-bell” - A woman prone to gossip
“Chuckaboo” - A dear friend, a bosom chum
“Beer and skittles” - A great time (see also: Irish Gaelic “craic”)
“Butter on bacon” - Something overdone or too extravagant
