This amazing and clever project was designed by a Korean team of designers, in collaboration with Pantone, to provide color to the streets of Seoul during the rainy season, while paying tribute to the Korean culture. Yesterday a terrorist killed 41 people in a stadium in Al-Asriya, a few miles from Baghdad. It was a football tournament. Seventeen aged between 10 and 16 died. Had it happened in Europe, the entire world would be weeping; our politicians would spend hours saying how Islam hates the West and how we should ‘close the borders’ to refugees. But these boys died in Iraq, and some bombs are not as loud as others. May they rest in peace.

Emma Watson to take a year off acting to focus on feminism

The actor has revealed her plans for a forthcoming break in order to focus on personal development and self-taught gender studies by reading a book a week

“Emma Watson has announced that she will take a year away from acting to further her knowledge of feminism.

The actor, last seen in the supernatural thriller Regression, told author and activist bell hooks about her intention during an interview in Paper magazine. 

Watson was tempted to spend the time at university but decided against it. “I almost thought about going and doing a year of gender studies, then I realised that I was learning so much by being on the ground and just speaking with people and doing my reading,” she said. “That I was learning so much on my own. I actually wanted to keep on the path that I’m on. I’m reading a lot this year, and I want to do a lot of listening.”

The Harry Potter star will also focus on HeForShe, an initiative that she launched in her capacity as a UN Women goodwill ambassador, aimed at engaging men in the fight for gender equality. The campaign will include an arts week, a university tour and the launching of a new site. Watson has also launched a feminist book group on Twitter, called Our Shared Shelf.

“I’m on my journey with this and it might change, but I can tell you that what is really liberating and empowering me through being involved in feminism is that … so much of the self-critiquing is gone,” said Watson.”

The article says ‘it doesn’t matter if they won or lost’ but I beg to differ.  It matters a great deal that she won.  The commentators loved it.  The judges loved it.  The audience loved it.  They loved her.  They loved her being modern and unapologetically black.  Traditional sports like this where there’s an artistic/aesthetic component, where the judges have some discretion, you can get absolutely screwed on your score if they think you’re not being ‘true’ to traditions or ‘the sport’ or the like.

She got a 9.925.  Her first round out with this, no warning to the judges how special it is going to be, and she got a 9.925.  A black girl with black music and black dance moves got the unquestionable approval from the officials of a sport that is traditionally hella white in this country.  And yes, she absolutely fucking killed the tumbling passes too, but they could’ve dinged her a lot more for not being ‘elegant’ or some bullshit.  They don’t even have to admit it – her first landing wasn’t perfect, and they could have knocked her as much as possible for that and pretended that was why.  But they didn’t.

And like, that should be not astounding.  The fact that she carried herself with beauty and dignity and grace and power and nailed the hell out of her technical elements should always mean a score like that.  But it doesn’t because, as you probably already know, racism.  And the fact that today there was no racist bullshit in college sports, well.  That occasion is still rare enough it’s worth talking about.
