Ambitious nail process

One type of the nails that I have decided to create for my “Nail project” is called ambitious nails. These nails would be made by aluminum. I picked this material because it seems kind of resistant but in reality it is a soft material.

Presentation options...

For my nail project I have decided to create my own nails. So I have been thinking lately how could I present my nails? Should I show just images of them? Should I just use them in a video?

At the end I concluded that the best way to present my nails is to create a replica of my hand and adjust them on it.

Since I have 3-4 different kind of nails that I want to create, I thought that I should pick a different “hand pose” for every different kind of nails. Every pose will be a small comment of my nails’ usage.

So I went to Foundry & Casting workshop in order to make a replica of my hand.

Studio crits

For my first studio crits I decided to show some of the process of my current project by creating the posters below.

During the presentation a student from my group mentioned that the way that I was presenting my work, reminds her, the structure of a business plan.

I believe that that was a really accurate comment!

Since I already have a BA in Business Administration, I realized that sometimes I am conducting my art projects as they are a business plan.

Art piece #1

So I had decided to imitate the symbol of crossed swords with the only difference that the end of the blade will be a nail. As I am intending to use the nails as a weapon towards society’s injustices, I figured that I needed a symbol to represent this “fight”.

Although, after my recorded tutorial I started questioning rather this symbol fits to my project or not. During the tutorial the tutor mentioned that by using such a military symbol might make the project too specif.

I found her point really accurate and at the moment I am not really sure if I am using this symbol or not.

What is going on with nails?

A few days ago I came across with an article which was called “2012 Grammys: The Best Celebrity Manicures of the Night”.

It gave great impression to me. I was used to celebrity articles about clothes and haircuts but I have never seen before a whole article about nails. Then I realized that nails these days have become a really big trend.

Since I have never had the desire to have my nails done(at least not on an everyday basis), I become curious about that trend. 

I started to wonder?

Why does this industry expand so much?

What is the physiological meaning behind this trend?

Why do human have nails?

What nails represent to people?

What is the actually use of the nails?

Is it just a trend or there is a deeper meaning behind the that?

So I became so curious about this topic that I decided that my upcoming project will be about nails!

Starting point...

I started to be interested in art when I started to paint. It was really an emotional period and I actually found painting quite healing.

Every time that I was feeling overwhelmed I would paint. I always had a specific system. I would randomly move my brush on the paper and after a while a figure subconsciously appeared.

I concluded that I wanted so badly to unburden all these negative feelings that the only way to do so was to put them down on paper.

Hoodoos

The image below depicts Ugo Rondinone ’s Mountain sculpture, inspired by naturally occurring hoodoos, which I saw at his current exhibition “clouds+mountains+waterfalls” at Sadie Coles HQ gallery.

“Many veer towards anthropomorphism, suggesting figures in crouching poses or gesturing attitudes, while others abruptly resist any such associative reading.”(Part of the exhibition’s art document) 

I personally found the mountain sculptures anthropomorphic and more specifically I viewed them as a suppressed figure, with no arms and totally incapable to escape.

The way that I “read” these sculptures actually reminded the way that I have been thinking about my paintings.

Alison Jackson in Lecture Theatre

Alison Jackson gave a great lecture yesterday in Chelsea’s Lecture Theatre.

During the lecture she talked about her previous, current and future work.

At some point she explanted to us the way that she is using research on her work.

For example, besides the fact that the image below looked kind of improvised, she informed us that she spends months of researching in order to set the shouting scene.

Alison’s Jackson’s approach on research actually helped me because I have been questioning lately how necessary is the research that I have been doing for my projects. But I when I heard her perspective on the topic, I realized that research is an integral part of an art work. It is crucial to be well informed about everything that it has to do with you project theme otherwise you could easily end up misplaced.

Morning Breath

This video is part of my coffee project “ Coffee grounds” and it called “Morning breath”. At this project I am trying to identify whether my habits are private and whether they are influenced by society’s model.

“I want you to be the first thing in the morning that comes into my mouth.”

Coffee is widely known as a beverage with an awaken use because of the caffeine that contains. In the video “Morning breathe” I am brushing my teeth with coffee. When I wake up I am dealing with two uncomfortable situations; bad taste and fatigue. I realized that bad taste is bothering me the most. I'm using coffee to refresh me.

Algerian Coffee store

Algerian Coffee store is established 1887 and today, 128 years later, the Algerian Coffee Stores has evolved into one of the world’s best known and leading suppliers of coffee and tea. 

When I walked I couldn’t ignore the strong smell of freshly roasted coffee. This amazing smell automatically reminds me my coffee project “Coffee grounds” and more specifically the video that I have shouted “Morning breath” in which I was brushing my teeth with coffee.

I wished that I knew this place during the research that I have been doing for my coffee project because there were so many varieties of coffee in there and so much history around them that I could really use these information while I was shouting the video.

Why Georgian architecture?

After I figured out why I was interested in architecture in general I was wondering why I chose specifically Georgian architecture.

I did a little research about Georgian architecture and I found out that the common features in Georgian buildings are the following:

1.       Sash windows 

2.       Window frames are rectangular 

3.       The roof is often hidden by a parapet 

4.       The most common building materials are  brick or stone 

So I realized that the above characteristics remind me something really familiar. My home back in Greece has many features of a Georgian building.

I conclude that my need of finding a home in combination with my childhood model of home, actually turned me into Georgian architecture.

clouds+mountains+waterfalls

Ugo Rondine’s long-running interest in natural phenomena and their reformulation in art, extends on his autumn exhibition “clouds+mountains+warerfalls” at Sadie Coles HQ gallery.

By the time that I walked into the exhibition I felt that I had just landed in a different world, a world full of colors, shapes and unlimited imagination.

I was almost convinced that Ugo Rondine’s landscape is a realistic depiction of a “magic” place that he had actually visited in the past.

So for me this is art. The ability of an artist to show you an ordinary thing in a different perpsective and still keep the object recognisable.

Phantom

Phantom is called Fiona’s Banner new film which is part of her current exhibition “Font” at Frith Street Gallery.

In this film a Phantom drone camera simultaneously observes and harries the book like a hawk chasing down its prey. 

It is really impressive how the industrial design of this gallery matches perfectly with the military character of Banner’s show. 

So I realized that alongside with my art work, I should always consider how the exhibition place look like and the way that I could match my art work with the place. Otherwise the exhibiton would look incomplete.

Out of 2 comes 3

Peter Wuthrich’s current exhibition at LGLondon gallery is called “Two Books”.

Well, I didn’t know the name of the exhibition when I visited the gallery and when I first saw the exhibits I couldn’t understand the material that they were made of. 

When I looked closer and I realized that the exhibits were actually two books placed on top of the other, I got really excited about the idea!

I automatically felt that the combination of all these thoughts and observations that I have had in the past by reading different (as the color cover) kinds of books, were well presented in front of my eyes as a piece of art.

Just like Wuthrich’s aphorism, “ out of 2 comes 3″

An Apartment/Gallery

LGLondon – 2 Hanway Place

Believe it or not, this kitchen is part of a really unique gallery which is suited in an apartment.

There are some galleries, that I have visited in the past, in which for some reason I do not feel comfortable at all. Sometimes it is because of the people who work there and they make me feel intimidated by their behavior. Sometimes it just the gallery and the way that the exhibits are placed. The important thing is that when this happens I am not able to enjoy the exhibition that I am visiting.

But this is not an issue at LGLondon gallery, due to its homely style, by the time that I entered into the gallery, I felt completely comfortable and free to enjoy the exhibition without any hesitations.
