5 Effective Ways of Memorising Markschemes
Take advantage of our corrupt education system where regurgitating information is prioritised over learning! Memorising markschemes from past papers is honestly one of the best ways to revise. It seems boring and straightforward but not only does it help loads considering you have similar questions in exams every year, but you learn what the examiner looks for in your answers. I’ve found that the exams I got 100% in were always the ones where I memorised the markschemes.
1.) Remembering a list of things - pairing/association.
Let’s say you need to remember a markscheme where you were asked about stem cells. This is what it looks like:
You can remember all of them pretty easily, and not forgetting any, by associating them with each other:
For example:
Undifferentiated + Retained capacity to divide
Use in medical research + in treatment of Leukaemia
Totipotent + Produce cell cultures
Tissue repair + form organs
Notice how they’re all kind of related to each other? Also knowing there are four main pairs you need will prevent you more from forgetting single points.
2.) Making up silly stories
Okay, let’s use this markscheme on how samples of DNA are used in crime scenes as an example:
Basically just create a story (I usually like to use mean girls) using each point of the markscheme - the important terminology is bolded. For example:
a. This crazy bitch called Regina George is suspected of having snuck into Aaron Samuel’s, the victim’s, house. Cady suspected her so a DNA sample of a blonde hair was taken from the crime scene (Aaron’s room)
b. Cady, being all forensic now, goes to a lab and uses PCR to increase the amount of DNA because one piece of hair is, like, nothing.
c. She uses restriction enzymes to cut the DNA. No one can RESTRICT her from doing this!!! SHe’s gonna CUT this bitch!!
d/e. Apparently Cady now needs to use “Gel electrophoresis”?? . She’s confused as to what the hell that is so she googles it. Apparently it seperate the DNA fragments according to size. A bit like how Gel can separate hair and make different sized hair do’s with it?
f. This Gel electrophoresis creates a unique pattern of bands! They’re very pretty. She loves the unique pattern of bands created by Gel electrophoresis!!
g. She compares them with the pattern bands she got from hair she found on Regina’s hairbrush when she came over two nights ago.
h. IT’S REGINA OMG THE CRIMINAL WAS IDENTIFIED
i. Unlike Regina’s psychological state, the DNA is quite stable
Okay that was such a stupid story, but visualising the events in your head can basically make it much easier to memorise lots of facts/processes!
3.) If you’re a visual person, make visual representations of what you’re trying to remember
Have one picture representing each step/point you’re trying to make. For example, take this markscheme on the process of In-vitro fertilisation:
Here is a photo of a small drawing thing I did (excuse the quality, I used my webcam) for each step, and underneath I’ve labelled each one:
1. Drugs are used to stop the menstrual cycle
2. FSH is injected into many follicles to develop
3. Eggs are extracted
4. Semen sample collected
5. Healthy sperm is selected
6. Through method of ICSI, sperm is injected into the egg
7. Semen is mixed with the egg in a dish
8. Embryo develops in an incubator at 37 degrees C
9. Embroys are examined, healthiest is chosen
10. Embryo is injected into the Uterus
11. 1, 2, 3 or 4 embroys are implanted
12. Pregnancy test to see if process was successful
The trick here is not just to draw it and memorise the drawing straight away, but to try and explain the whole process by just looking at the drawing. Once you’ve done that a few times, you’ll see that it may be easier to remember it without even seeing the drawing as you may have visualised it automatically. Again, drawing little stupid things that get you to remember works really well :)

I’ve recently completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) and am currently waiting to receive my exam results. Looking back over the two years, I think the most difficult decision I had to make was which three subjects to take at standard level (SL) and which three (or four if you’re a masochist) to take at high level (HL). Here are some questions that I think might be helpful to ask yourself if you’re struggling with the same decision, because at the end of the day, you want to take the subjects which will help maximise your final score at the end of the program!
What have you been good at in the past? If you’ve got a natural inclination towards certain subjects and receive good grades for them compared to other subjects, these might be a good choice for your HL’s! I’ve always found the humanities less demanding than maths and sciences and so I took both English literature and history at HL. I didn’t have to put as much time and effort in these subjects to achieve a good grade for them as I did for maths and so this drastically helped with my time management!
What is your intended career path? Make sure to research your intended career path! What are the prerequisites and presumed knowledge for the course you want to take? Some courses will require you take a subject at HL, and so clearly you would need to take those subjects at HL or else you wouldn’t be allowed in the course! Some may not require you take a subject at HL but may offer extra credit or recognised prior learning for having taken it at HL!
Who are the subject teachers? While you may love a particular subject, having a sucky teacher can really impact how well you perform in it. Taking a subject at HL tacks on an additional 90 hours of class time with them. See who your teachers are and how good they are at teaching the subject you’re interested in. A bad teacher will likely add on a lot more self-directed learning to your already busy schedule. So long as you’re dedicated to do this, a bad teacher shouldn’t stop you taking a subject at HL! There are a ton of online resources and countless past exams which you can use as a substitute.
How much time are you willing to dedicate to the subject? Taking up a subject at HL will require you to put additional time and effort in to achieve a good grade. The amount you will be required to know for the exams can be significantly more than those who take it at SL. Having taken chemistry at HL, I needed to put a lot more time into this subject than SL physics. It requires a fair bit more dedication and persistence to do well in a HL subject, and this is reflected in the grades received! Students who take a subject at HL often get a higher grade than their SL counterparts! I would say this is because of the additional time and effort put into the subject!
What are you passionate about? While your primary aim is to get the highest possible score out of 45 at the end of the two years, you should still enjoy your time in the IB! The subjects I took at HL were largely chosen because I was passionate about them! The breadth of the mandatory IB subjects means you can do almost any course once you finish, so unless you’re dead set on a particular uni course that requires HL maths, don’t stress! There are always alternative pathways when you’ve finished anyway.
I hope this helps some of you in choosing your IB subjects! Feel free to message me about the IB and what it entails any time!!

All languages can say everything. The way that they differ is how they say what they say, and that’s what makes language so fascinating.
David J. Peterson, who has created languages for Thor: The Dark World, HBO’s Game of Thrones and SyFy’s Defiance.
In his new book, The Art Of Language Invention, Peterson details the languages he’s invented and pairs them with lots of (often technical) advice about how readers can create some of their own.

Pre-University Preparation
So I thought I should make a blog where I share my oncoming university experiences. I could talk about the things that are great, the things I’m excited about, and the things that aren’t so great. I’m hoping people will find this blog somewhat relate-able - or at the least, entertaining to read through.
To kick off my first ever post (yay!), I thought I might discuss some of the stresses I’ve had with applying, and accepting my University offers.
Applying
I applied to a few universities - you know, so I still had some options if I didn’t into my first choice. You had a lot of stuff to keep tabs on: deadlines, application fees, transcripts, references, etc… so if you’re not on top of things, you could easily miss a deadline (it has happened to me 💔)!
I applied online for some schools, and applied via an…

Studying, done right, can be the most rewarding of all activites. It is stimulating, but relaxing. You’re focused, but wandering your mind. Your mind is abuzz, but your body breathes slow. You’re alone, but in the company of millenia of thinking. You pick something up, take it apart and you make it your own. You’re literally assembling your future thoughts. You’re in control of how you will see the world.
You’re growing, but you’re raising yourself.

On Getting My IB Diploma
So, as I mentioned in a previous post I wrote on my phone while at work, I GOT MY IB DIPLOMA!!!
It was super exciting and I just feel really…satisfied. Yeah, that’s a good word for it. I’ve been in IB since my MYP days in 7th grade. That’s 6 years. A third of my life.
And getting that diploma was truly rewarding. I’m actually surprised that I don’t have more to say about it, but I guess it just feels right.
But there’s a lot more that IB gave me than this fancy paper that’s coming in the mail. If anything, that really isn’t the most valuable.
Even the most obvious thing, college credit, wasn’t valuable. Actually, I don’t get any credit for IB or AP at MIT because I didn’t get a 5 on the AP Calc test and I didn’t get a 7 in my IB HLs and my school didn’t offer HL Physics or Math.
When I say this people’s reactions are often to instantly start apologizing and feeling bad for me. Also underclassmen doing IB turn various shades of purple and blue and white in fear of sharing my fate.
But don’t. If you’re an IB kid reading this, don’t be afraid.

You don’t need to feel bad if you don’t get into the Ivy League schools. Moreover, you don’t need to feel pressured to apply to them. There are so many amazing schools out there. Spend time this summer to do some research and find the best ones for you.
