Situwuka and Katkwachsnea, a Native American couple of the Tlingit People 1912. Photo by the Shortridges
via reddit
This photo came up on my feed and it’s a beautiful couple, but obviously not Tlingit clothing! The reddit link shows that the original poster noted this and dug deeper -
I found the photo at the Library of Congress. The catalog there doesn’t say anything about the couple being Tlingit, just says “Native man, seated, and woman, standing, facing front”, so I did some more research. Louis Shottridge and his wife apparently took a trip to Philadelphia in 1912 to meet another noted anthropologist and at first I thought that perhaps the photo was of a couple they met along the way, or perhaps someone that they met while in Philadelphia, but that was inconclusive.
So then I figured that I ought to search on the names. If I could figure out which group the names were from, then I could figure out what was up with the apparent discrepancy in the dress and the tribe. I did a search for Situwuka and found this information from the University of Pennsylvania Museum.
There I learned that Louis’ Tlingit name was Situwuka. The woman is his wife Florence. Knowing what Louis’ Tlingit name was helped me narrow my search terms down to this site which has another photo of them in this outfit. Apparently the couple were part of a touring group with some sort of Indian opera company where Louis sang tenor. The stereotypical look of the Indian is the Plains Indian look, which is of course what they have.
Thus the mystery of the Tlingit couple with the Plains Indian outfits is solved.

In advance of this month’s Hacking Reality salon at the Academy of the Impossible, I figured I should finally post my MA thesis online. I think I’ve put enough distance between the document and myself to publicize with some measure of confidence, and I’m inspired by the discussions of politics and memes that I keep seeing, particularly the stuff going on over at Metahaven. Hopefully, my work can, in some small way, contribute to that conversation.
Here’s the TL;DR:
The online image and message board known as 4chan is as paradoxical as it is popular. Boasting an estimated 18 million unique monthly visitors and generating one million posts per day, the site is a locus of obscenity and bigotry, a wellspring of popular internet culture, and the birthplace of the distributed hacktivist collective known as Anonymous. In contrast to other forms of social media, no registration is required to participate on 4chan, and maintaining a persistent identity is both difficult and discouraged. Although many deride 4chan as puerile or nihilistic, I propose that a nascent form of political expression can be discerned within the site’s subculture. Specifically, I explore how participants on 4chan use carnivalesque humour and memetic communication to foster a collective identity and articulate a political orientation towards the internet—summed up by the phrase “the internet is serious business”—while remaining committed to an ethic of radical anonymity. In doing so, I recast participation on 4chan as a political act, albeit one that falls outside of a normative or rational framework.

Saw an exhibit of Nick Cave's (of Chicago, not Australia) wearable art at the Seattle Art Museum a couple years ago. He uses a lot of found and recycled materials, including sweaters, mirrors, bits of metal, whatever, and creates intricate and beautiful pieces of wearable art.
The young writer will be drawn at every turn toward eccentricities in language. He will hear the beat of new vocabularies, the exciting rhythms of special segments of his society, each speaking a language of its own. All of us come under the spell of these unsettling drums; the problem for the beginner is to listen to them, learn the words, feel the vibrations, and not be carried away. “Youth invariably speaks to youth in a tongue of his own devising: he renovates the language with a wild vigor, as he would a basement apartment. By the time this paragraph sees print, ‘uptight,’ ‘ripoff,’ ‘rap,’ ‘dude,’ ‘vibes,’ ‘copout,’ and ‘funky’ will be the words of yesteryear, and we will be fielding more recent ones that have come bouncing into our speech — some of them into our dictionary as well. A new word is always up for survival. Many do survive. Others grow stale and disappear. Most are, at least in their infancy, more appropriate to conversation than to composition.

These niggas be whack, yo.
Twitter, as I understand it, is a sort of “Hell” that I was banished to upon death in my previous life. In this abstract realm, the only thing I am certain of is that my cries are awarded “Favs” or “RTs” when they are particularly miserable or profane. These ethereal merits do nothing to ease my suffering, but I have deliriously convinced myself that gathering enough of them will impress my unseen superiors and grant me a promotion to a higher plane of existence. This is my sole motivation.
