Mason was actually back in Mystic Falls after along time of being away. He hadn’t thought of returning until he heard of his brother’s death. That was a few days ago, as Mason was not seated at the Mystic Grill with an old friend in the face of Jenna. He laughed at one of her jokes as he took the seat across from her. “I can’t believe you’re still in town. Most of our classmates already left.” He observed, raising his hand to attract the attention of the waiter.

Jenna shrugged her shoulders as she lifted a hand and ran her fingers through the length of her strawberry blonde hair. "I wasn't, at least... I wasn't for a while," she pointed out, thinking of her hasty escape from the town a little more than a decade ago. "There are just some things you need to come back for." Family was one of them, and hers was in need. He would have to understand that, surely. "But we shouldn't talk about that, not now. Not yet." She didn't have the heart to. "Tell me about you. How's life since you've been gone?"

He’d heard she’d been offered a job in town, one that would keep her there long term. Klaus had been keeping his distance since that initial meeting in the bar – offering pleasantries here and there and suggestions of places to help her get settled, but that was the extent of his contact with Jenna.

It was dangerous in New Orleans, especially around him, and then last thing he wanted was her becoming a target. Besides, looking at her still hurt.

Today though, knowing that she was likely in the city long term, Klaus felt the need to clear some air – to perhaps right whatever wrong had come between them when he left Mystic Falls. He knew her routine (for protection purposes, he told himself – not because he wanted to see her), so sitting down across from her as she ordered lunch had been no difficult feat. “I’m to understand you’ve been offered quite the job, love. Do you plan on taking it?”

It hadn’t been the plan when she went down there. Jenna didn’t want to find a job, an apartment, a life. She had come to visit, that was all. But she had the first, she was working on the second, and the third would most certainly follow. It was a good opportunity, that’s what she kept telling herself. She wasn’t staying in New Orleans, depleting her savings, for any other reason. To work with a police department bringin’ down the bad guys… it was what she had gone to school for. What she had earned her doctorate for. So why did she have a nagging little feeling in the back of her mind? The one that knew she was lying to herself? Eh, who could really say for sure.

Well, Jenna could. Especially when that nagging little feeling dropped into the chair across from her as she ordered her usual chicken wrap and lemonade. Her lips curved into an easy sort of smile, though the turbulence just beneath was ever present as it had been since that first day she saw him. “Yeah, actually,” she said with a little nod. “It’s a really great opportunity and every time I think of returning to Mystic Falls, I don’t know. It’s just the same old thing. This’ll be good for me, y’know. The change in scenery, pace.”

Clearly he was still in the dog house. He was nearly a hundred and seventy years old but he suddenly felt like a teenage boy all over again. He swallowed hard against any words that might come out of his mouth in response and he turned back to the stove. He was beginning to think that this was going to take more than a home cooked meal for her to forget what he’d seen. Would she tell Elena? Oh god. “So uh…will Alaric be around tonight? They’ll be plenty of food if he is.” Stefan grimaced. Now it sounded like he was proposing some creepy double date. Smooth Stefan, smooth.

Jenna slowly turned as she poured the last of a wine bottle into her glass, her attention focused on it so she wouldn’t have to look at Stefan. “No, not tonight,” she murmured, doing her best not to sound disappointed with the knowledge. “He’s caught up grading papers. Said something about needing to play catch up?” Which was strange, to her, because he always seemed to be staying home and working. No, nope. She wasn’t going to dwell. She moved over to the trash can and let the bottle slip from her grasp. “So, what are you making, anyway?”

Jeremy’s eyes narrowed in amusement, leaning back with his elbow on the bar top, drink in his other hand. “I can offer you alcohol and amazing sex,” he shrugged casually, knowing it was true and not caring who heard. Jenna was feisty, and she had a killer ass, how could he resist? As for what she thought about him, well, it wasn’t like he was looking to fall in love with her. He just wanted to have some fun. What would the harm be? He flashed his teeth at her. “I won’t even bite.” And if she was enjoying her date, there would have been no reason for her to be standing here with him right now. “If your date was at all interesting, you would have ignored me. I’m gonna say my chances are pretty good.”

Jenna snapped her phone shut as she neared the bar, empty wine glass in her other hand. The perfect excuse. She was even going so far as to not look at the lecherous man doing what he could to get her attention. “I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. The cockier the man, the less he has to work with…” she stated with a simple shrug, one hand lifting to flag down the bartender for a refill. “The only reason I didn’t ignore you is because I was hoping you’d listen to reason… I see now that I was horribly mistaken.” As the bartender took her glass, Jenna finally turned to regard the vampire. “What is it about me?” she asked, eyebrows knitting together. “Is it just that you want what you can’t have? There are a lot of women in this town, and all of them are easier to get into bed than me. Why don’t you go poke one of them with your tiny stick.”
