She knew that she was weird and off-putting at times, and that he wasn’t always comfortable with how much she picked from his brain and attitudes. “We’re going to have to find more money…” she started, and she had the grace to look sheepish. “I bought some new outfits to try as Hummingbird. You won’t believe how expensive it is to get fire and bullet resistant fabric. You’re very lucky with your smart, self-repairing suit.”

He could feel a little flicker of annoyance start to flare up at the mention of money, it was always a hassle to go get more. That brief flash of anger was snuffed out when she explained herself, however. Alright, at least she’d used it on something fucking useful. And she was right, his suit was pretty damn convenient. “I don’t know if ‘lucky’ is the right word when I just took it from Peter, but you’re right. I’ll..... figure something out. Did you at least get everything you needed?”

🍨 – She smiled at his words, even if her memories of the shipping container weren’t good ones. “You deserve to be happy too, you know? You’ve been trying so hard to make everyone happy, to keep everyone safe… you deserve happiness too.” She knows that he didn’t feel worthy of good things, that he feels bad for the bad stuff in his past, for killing people. She knows him inside, though, and she knows he tortures himself over what he’s done when he was not in control of his actions. She doesn’t hold him responsible for those things, and she wishes he’d see himself the way she sees him.

“Eh.... I dunno....” He shrugged. Truthfully, he wanted good things in his life, to be happy, but he didn’t feel like he deserved any of it, he hadn’t earned it yet, probably never would. Realizing she was probably picking up on these thoughts, Kaine sat back and cleared his throat, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m sorry, let’s...... let’s just talk about something else now, huh?”

Alright, so this Human Torch must not be as close with Peter as the one in his world. Either that, or his Peter Parker must look very different. “Uh huh..... Are you not friends with Spider-Man? I would’ve thought you’d recognize the face–– a little, anyway, I know the beard makes a big difference. Guess the Spider-man and Human Torch here must be closer than wherever you’re from.”

“Not so much, not for lack of him trying to get me on board with it.” He frowned, mild confusion on his face as he stared at Johnny. “Wherever you’re from, does your Spider-Man not have clones? ‘Cause that’s pretty much been a constant everywhere I’ve been. The usually perky Aracely smiled at him, stretching out on the couch. “I like the memories I made with you, Kaine.” She could feel the loneliness seeping from him, she was not digging to know why though. He would tell her if he wanted to. She was trying to respect his privacy more, to keep her gifts under control. “I mean what I said, you’re like a big brother to me.”

Whether or not Aracely was trying to hear his thoughts, Kaine generally assumed she was listening anyway, he was just grateful that this time she managed not to blurt out every little thing that came to mind. “You know..... I never thought I’d care as much as I do when I first found you in that shipping container, but you’re probably my favorite person in the whole world. I’d do anything to make you happy.”

🍨 – The next words out of her mouth were in Spanish. “I want to go to a school with weird people like me!” She sighed, dramatically flopping back against the couch, arms over her face. “I don’t know, I want to feel… not alone.” She sighed in English, peering at him. “You’re great. You’re my champion. Like my big brother. I want friends.”

Kaine may not understand what she was saying, but her expression told him enough. Whether or not they were his own memories, he could remember feeling lonely as a teenager–– well, he could remember Peter feeling lonely as a teen, anyway. She didn’t deserve to go through that.

“I’m sorry.... about all of this. I don’t really know how to help, but we can figure it out together. As long as you’re safe, whatever you get up to, I don’t see why we couldn’t try to find some people your age for you to hang out with.”

  “Just ‘cause it’s technically next week does not mean it’s been a week since that happened, it’s only been four days!” Not really something Peter can say right now, because Kaine’s words are something that Peter would DEFINITELY say if he were in a similar situation, but that’s not the point right now. The point is, the LAST time the both of them ended up getting involved in a pretty bad fight, Kaine had gotten hurt, and it hasn’t been long since. “I’m just gonna go on patrol for a few hours! It won’t be that long, and everything seems pretty quiet today anyways-”

“I never said it had been a week, just that it happened last week.” He pointed out, his tone completely deadpan. He knew he would make the exact same argument and that Peter knew it too, probably why he seemed so annoyed by it now. “I’m fine, you know. I can come with you, make sure you don’t run into anything you can’t handle alone. Like you said, that was four days ago, I’m good. How long do you think it takes to bounce back from a light stabbing, anyway?”

She could read people’s minds better every day, and couldn’t always control when or how she knew things about their… activities. It got her to feel curious about experimenting herself. “I mean, people who are eighteen and not fun-killing guardians.”  

“Dates?” He screwed up his face at that. Sure, Aracely might not be his kid, and technically she was probably even older than him, but she still just seemed so..... young to be thinking about boys–– or girls, whoever she was interested in, he wouldn’t judge. “Why would you want to go out on dates? Your life isn’t exciting enough fighting werewolves and shit?”

So like I’ve seen a lot of writing advice posts saying you have to stick to one characterisation all the time and lemme tall you that’s bullshit

There is one specific type of moment where your characters absolutely must act out of character.

When shit gets serious.

Seriously, there’s an entire trope on that.

This. 

Everyone has their own distinct personality.  But your personality is multi-layered, it’s constantly changing. Your friends at school might see you as a bit quiet and reserved, but friendly. Your colleagues at work might see the snark, the jokes, the forced smiles and negativity. Your best/closest friends might see the loud side, the bitchy side, the laugh until you can’t breathe side. 

You’ve heard the phrases ‘But they’re not like that with me,’ or ‘I don’t see it.’ When I was at work I said it all the time- because certain people acted one way around me, and a different way when I wasn’t there. 

It’s the same with situations. It is impossible to determine how someone is going to act in any given situation. Most people I worked with would say I’m polite to customers, but put me in a situation where we’re understaffed, way too busy, with customers being rude- I won’t take any crap and I will be rude back. ‘But that doesn’t sound like Sarah!’ That’s the point. 

If you’ve got a snarky character, they’re not going to be snarky all the time, so don’t expect them to be. That’s unrealistic. There will come a time when your character won’t have the luxury of standing to the side, or refusing to fight, or showing their anger, or being snarky. They will have to change- if only for that moment. 

So please, don’t worry about keeping your character in character all the time. We all act differently in different situations- let your characters do the same.

He glanced over at her, one eyebrow raised and a suspicious look on his face as he spoke. “Is this one of those times where you just say whatever random thought that pops into your head or..... are you trying to get at something here?”
