Hugh Grant in an interview with variety said that Mr. Reed never fully lied. There was a blueberry pie we saw later in the film and he does have a wife and that she’s one of the prophets. That brings up more questions for me like when did they get married and how did they meet? Did their relationship start like a normal one and then he converted her. Or did he do the same thing he did with the other prophets only he forced her to marry him unlike the others. Is she the first prophet the first person. That makes me think that the great loss Hugh mentioned in an interview letterboxd was maybe a family member or close friend, or maybe the dog in the photo.

I mean I guess he could still have lost his wife if we interpret the prophet wife as a second wife. It could also maybe be the great loss was his first wife he spirals goes insane marries someone else in a vain attempt to deal with his grief. He’s like never mind fuck this and manipulates her with his one true religion, and sends her to basement to be prophet because she’s not able to replace the wife he lost.

I don’t know I’m rambling. This is a stupid theory or hypothesis or whatever. Idk I personally prefer the theory that the person close to Mr. Reed who died and became a catalyst for his turn to religion could be the wife rather than his wife just being one of the prophets but that’s just me.

I saw heretic. I loved it. My mom and I have been talking about it. I loved the cinematography. Hugh Grant was great and so were Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East.

What fascinates me most is Mr Reed and how he’s in this position. Hugh Grant has given glimpses into the backstory he made when prepping for the movie. He sees Mr Reed as a lonely person who had few friends, a groovy professor who’s trying too hard to relate to his students, and someone who might’ve lost someone close to him. It feels like Mr Reed is a man who’s dealt maybe with a lot of grief and loss. The religion stuff is just an extension of him trying to gain a sense of control or just comfort. I’m pretty sure he vaguely states that something happened and he turned to religion for that comfort.

The more I’ve thought about the movie the more it felt similar to me and my journey as a trans person not as a religious person. I didn’t grow up religious my mom’s side was Unitarian and my dad’s family was Methodist I’m pretty sure, but going to church for them was more of a community thing. In the end my parents weren’t religious. The film is of course about religion I’d be remiss to ignore that, but when Mr Reed interrogates them about their religious beliefs it reminds me of that questioning of transness sometimes from other trans people. His one true religion being control reminds me that some trans people believe dysphoria is then only way you can be trans. It’s that deep seated need to feel like you’re right and everyone else is wrong even if it means hurting others to prove it.

The scenes of Barnes and Paxton stuck in his basement reminds me of the years I spent in believing I wasn’t trans enough. This belief that you’re wrong. Like Paxton I tried so hard to fall in line with this Mr Reed type thinking. Like when she wants to through the disbelief door to please him. In the end it didn’t matter which door it leads to the same place. I felt like I was making a choice but I wasn’t and in the end like Barnes and Paxton the two doors led to the same place. I’d chosen the nonbinary door but because of what I’d been told I ended up in the same place. Like them I didn’t actually get what I needed. I just found myself deeper and lost, desperate to pretend I was okay.

It was also a humanizing movie showing them in a way where none were right or wrong. The religious characters aren’t bad and neither is the atheist character. It’s about an exploration of belief and of faith. A great video by Kat Blaque explores the transphobia from trans people towards nonbinary people in particular. She talks about how she sympathizes with them and sees they’re struggling with their own dysphoria. In a way Mr Reed is the same if we take into account hugh grants insights about Mr Reed. He’s someone who’s struggling and hasn’t found a good outlet to deal with it properly.
