Continuing to flood you with Christmas songs: this one I suspect may be one of many Icelandic Christmas songs that’s actually originally Italian and originally not a Christmas song.

Entitled Ef ég nenni (’If I can be bothered’) it is another one that splits people into two, a lot of people can’t stand it over here. Also I don’t know why the video is an image from Winnie the Pooh

A rarity: An Icelandic comedy Christmas song! By comedy duo Tvíhöfði (Jón Gnarr, who you may have heard of, and Sigurjón Kjartansson), a song about beating up Santa, thinking he was a burglar.

Keeping on with original Icelandic Christmas songs, here is Jólafeitabolla (’Christmas fatty’) by Morðingjarnir (’The Killers’).

As you may’ve deduced it is about the more gluttonous side of Icelandic Christmas.

Jólahjól is one of those that splits the nation into two factions, you love it or you hate it, or that’s the way it seems anyway hehe.

As the title suggests (’Christmas bike’) it’s about getting a bike for Christmas.

And a very 80s music video included!

And so the two styles of music that seem to be popular coming out of Iceland these days are far from the krútt wave that Sigur rós and múm and more are/were part of (nothing wrong with any style of music, waves just come and go). It’s now hip hop and then this: black metal. And almost all of both is “sung” in Icelandic! If you’re into extreme music there’s a wave of Icelandic black metal making some noise internationally, like Misþyrming, Naðra, Zhrine, Mannveira, Sinmara and more. I’ll admit though this is not the easiest for following the lyrics!

A good example of how a popular song can get a phrase into circulation in a language community: Not long after this song came out, “það er bara ein fokking regla” (there’s only one fucking rule) became a popular phrase over here.

So if you happen to like both rap and learning Icelandic, there’s a lot of things happening now. Reykjavíkurdætur, Úlfur Úlfur, Emmsjé Gauti, Rottweiler, GKR and Aron Can are just a few examples of “hot” artists right now.

Bumbubolti

Hæ allir! It’s been a while, I know. I’ve been quite busy. Yes, I just missed Dagur íslenskrar tungu, Icelandic language day. That was yesterday. Hope you had a good one!

Today’s word is bumbubolti! That is a type of soccer played for fun by people who aren’t training and competing in proper clubs, usually I guess 25 and older, which is organized though in the way that it takes place in a set rented slot at a facility, usually once a week.

Number of players on each side varies, rules are usually mostly the same ones you’re familiar with if you’ve played or watched the sport, except offside is rare I guess.

The word literally translates to “gut ball” referring to stomach fat, which I guess is common enough among bumbubolti players, guts being more common as this type obviously involves less training and dieting than pro or semi-pro soccer (I’m trying to word this as body positive as I can! Guts are obviously natural and who cares how much you weigh. Love yourselves!). Workplaces and friend groups are the most common groups to play it I feel.

Example sentence:

Ertu eitthvað að æfa núna?

Nei, ég er bara í bumbubolta með félögunum.

(Are you training at all now? No, I just play bumbubolti with the mates.)

Lastly I don’t know exactly how active this blog will be, going forward, but I’m hoping it will be more so than lately.
