Last night I remarked on a few different systems of Asgardian record-keeping; now I will go on to apply those theories. Asgard probably has a sizeable bureaucracy, given the scale of the architecture, the wealth channelled towards the monarch and a number of other things that I made a post about once but lost.* Given the complexity, a sizeable amount of records must be kept.
It is unlikely that they rely purely on spoken language for this; memory aids at least would streamline the process and make it more efficient, since a record of, say, the number of people in a given village would have to pass through a number of hands to reach a number of people, and it would not always be practical to have that passed on orally. Human memory and perception are also falliable, and it is probable that Asgardian memory and perception are too.
The wealth channelled into the shining city, and the fact that there are definitely hills in the background, suggests that there are many provincial areas. The wealth suggests that Odin’s grip is pretty tight, and that there are effective means of wealth collection. It is probable, therefore, that there are decent roads. Given Asgard’s small size, messengers either carrying oral messages, letters or other forms of record-keeping are likely to be able to zip around pretty quickly. This is almost certainly how royal, aristocratic, bureaucratic and probably wealthy business is conducted.
The mass of people are unlikely to have access to that, given that even in the brief glimpses of Asgardian commoners in the opening monologue there are no horses in evidence. If there is a portable way of carrying messages, they may be able to bribe their way into the bag of another person’s messenger. If they can’t afford that, cannot write (I have speculated that most people are educated by their parents in the trade of their parents; non-literate parents would thus be likely to raise non-literate kids) or there is not, they probably would have to travel themselves (carrying messages from several people.)
*I am not exactly an organised person.
In last night’s post, I had a brainwave about how manipulating dark energy could be a matter of will. I decided not to go into it there because I wanted to stay on track.
A while ago while thinking about language, I came up with the idea that the Allspeak might be a form of externalised telepathy that is perceived as speech. This would mean that Asgardians can influence the world around them, specifically the perceptions of people around them, and the way they understand things, with their minds.
This would mean that their ‘magical’ abilities are actually an extension of their language, which has a lot of implications. One would expect that it would be hard, if not impossible, to manipulate dark energy without ‘speaking’ the Allspeak; however, it’s also possible that there are many ways to manipulate it that affect the effects you can have, although some functions (like creating wormholes) are probably pretty much consistent. The jotnar, then, may manipulate it through their control of their personal temperature, which would account for the very ice-based nature of their magic. Asgard produces illusions because they do it through this externalised telepathic ‘language’ of pure meaning, which they may not perceive as sound but rather as… meaning. Odin can do other things because he may know other means of manipulating it that take a lifetime to acquire.*
Perhaps Odin and Heimdall can see everything because they can expand their telepathic field over the Nine Realms - that is what Heimdall means by his ‘gaze.’
As a result of this, manipulating dark energy will look like just ‘willing’ things to happen because that’s effectively what it is.
It may also explain why the gem in the spear Loki has in the Avengers works as it does, since I don’t think it’s one of the Infinity Gems but rather made of the same stuff as the Tesseract (I’m not sure about this, but putting it out there anyway). Loki does magic the Asgardian way, which relates to this externalised telepathy, which means that when ‘put into’ his hands (I think that could be a significant phrasing that makes it ‘belong’ to him) its output of dark energy has an effect on the minds of people. It would probably scotch the idea that Thanos was mind-controlling him, since I would imagine that if Thanos is using dark energy his methods would be different, but would explain why Thanos needed him. It could be that it’s normal for dark energy to have an effect on the mind of the Asgardian user/person in close proximity if they do it too much - and perhaps that’s why Odin went looking for the other ways of using it, and why they built the Bifrost. The effect would probably be small, but significant; more an amplification than a change.
*If Jane Foster manages to get a handle on portal/wormhole tech, which does seem to rely heavily on dark energy, what will Midgard’s grasp on it look like? I would say that, given the way our society and science function now, it would be computer-mediated. If this is even MCU-possible, it’s likely that it will be through our control of the virtual world that we learn to manipulate dark energy. Notice how Selvig sets up the Tesseract for the portal with a computer. We probably won’t be able to learn the Allspeak; our bodies don’t do that kind of temperature shenanigans; but our fingers dance around the keyboard and have real world effects.
