The doujin circle I work with has released an introductory zine!

I have a new short story in this edition. It’s about the evolving relationship between two brothers as their jobs begin to affect their personal lives. It’s bittersweet and a little horrifying, because as Leo Tolstoy once wrote, “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

Oh, I wasn’t thinking of roleplay. I was thinking standard homophobia and misogyny. Tiefer teasing Jehan for getting aroused by men by making him dress like a woman or making him do things associated with femininity. “If you like men so much, then you must be a cootie-having girl. Let me show you how much of a woman you really are.”

taking off a mask to reveal what lies beneath as a romantic gesture is overdone, and besides i want to see the romantic or even platonic potential of protecting someone's identity beneath the mask, without any expectation of ever being allowed to see what's under it. picking it up and holding it gently to their face when it's knocked off and they're in danger of being exposed, without trying to catch a glimpse of what they "really" look like under there. throwing yourself in front of them to hide them from view while they put themselves back together without taking advantage or looking back to see what you're protecting. learning to read them by body language, tone of voice, and behaviour so well that you never need to see their face to feel like you know and understand them.

Stranger Things season 1: beneath the superficial image of “peace and prosperity” in 1980s small-town America, there was the painful legacy of countless atrocities committed by the American government in the name of ‘freedom.’

Stranger Things season 4: evil Russians (not Soviets) have sent our All-American Hero to the gulags which apparently still exist in the 1980s and it’s up to us to save him 🇺🇸🦅🫡

There’s probably a term that already exists for this but if there isn’t I’m gonna call it ‘Rambofication’ in honor of its probably most well known instance: Rambo First Blood was about a soldier, John Rambo (that’s his actual name I’m not doing a bit), returning home from the Vietnam war, so traumatized by war that he brought the war home with him to a small town, unable to adapt to life without strict military discipline and hierarchy. Subsequent Rambo movies were about how John Rambo was the only supersoldier tough enough and patriotic enough to kill faceless hordes of dastardly foreign commies.

Ergo, ‘Rambofication’ is the process of a series starting with a relatively nuanced or subversive narrative before its sequels become a shallow embrace of the very narrative it originally subverted. It happens surprisingly often!

We need to coin a term for this movement of books, films, etc that market themselves as being wildly salacious and horny, but ultimately the apex of their erotic sensibility isn't any worse than something you'd see in an HBO show from 2003 and/or do so while having the horniness mostly be contained within the tone and style of twee fanfiction where all the sex is called "spice." Like stuff that frames itself as being the sexiest thing since sex, completely transgressive and radical in its expression of it, while also presenting all its horny material to you while holding your hand and giving you a glass of warm milk.

This is not even that new of a phenomenon. There are so many sexploitation films from the 1970s and 1980s that market themselves as THE HEIGHT OF DEBAUCHERY! and FULL OF DEPRAVED LUSTS! and then you watch it and it’s the exact same heterosexual sex in missionary position that you’d see in mainstream movies, but it cost less to film. An annoying trend that ought to die but will not.
