Animal Intelligence
Ever notice how they keep moving the goalposts when it comes to animal intelligence vs. human intelligence?
“Humans are completely unique. No other animal uses tools.”
“Actually, wild sea otters have been observed using rocks to open shellfish.”
“Okay, but that’s not true intelligence. They just pick the rocks up; they don’t alter them in any way.”
“Chimps peel the leaves from sticks to make more effective termite probes.”
“Well, that’s just technology. Only humans have art.”
“What about painting elephants? Art critics often can’t tell the difference between their work and a human’s.”
“Okay fine. But only humans have language. That’s the mark of true intelligence.”
“These African Grey Parrots use hundreds of words correctly and even ask original questions.”
“Oh yeah? Well, does any non-human species demonstrate self-awareness?”
“Dolphins pass the mirror test without training.”
“Pfft. How about problem-solving?”
“I can’t keep squirrels out of my bird feeder no matter what I do.”
“Aha! Bet you can’t think of a species that possesses all these traits! Only humans! We’re No. 1! We’re No. 1!”
“Crows.”
“LALALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOOOOUUUUUUUUU…”
Are we smart enough to know how smart animals are? by Frans de Waal explores this exact question and its a fascinating read.
Humans had enough trouble seeing other humans as human. We are not even remotely smart enough to know how smart animals are. We would have a huge existential crisis if we realised other creatures are as sentient and aware as we are.
Its also important to recognise that this is not just human ignorance, we all have a vested interest in pretending animal intelligence cannot ever compare to ours. How intelligent an animal is when compared to humans shouldn’t even matter, but it turns out it is much easier to exploit and kill animals if we pretend they are mindless automaton.
“A couple months ago, reddit taught me that newlyweds used to plant sycamore trees on both sides the walkway leading to their house, then join them together to symbolize two becoming one. Today I saw it for the first time.”

it takes years to develop your craft. do not romanticize the idea of an ‘overnight success’. be a student. grow organically. get really good. hate your work. start over. find new ways to express the same ideas. the student becomes the master. your time will come.
your crimes are known. the frog council sits in judgement.

There’s a species of solitary mason bees that make these pretty little nests for their larvae out of flower petals.
Hey, reminder that one of the reasons humanity has been able to flourish is because we formed societies and helped support each other. Complete independence and self reliance is a myth to try to get you to buy more things. Please reach out. Please connect yourself. There is no reason you have to do things alone.
y’all make sure you date someone that cares about your mental health pls
And date someone who cares about their own mental health as well
I think the lesson from movements like the plastic straw ban is that people care about the environment, people want to help. But they don’t know how to do so in a productive way, choosing individualised, consumer-based solutions over larger structural change.
So how do we access that energy and concern, that genuine desire to help save the planet and stop climate change, and channel into more productive (anticapitalist) climate action?
The plastic straw ban happened largely because a viral video of a sea turtle with a straw stuck in his nose, back in 2015 drew attention to oceanic plastic waste. A large amount is fishing nets and fishing gear, but focus was kept on straws due to the video and because it was something easy corporations could work with, compared to fishing gear which would be more complicated.
So from this I’ve learned
1) Never let the corporations control the conversation.
2) Change takes time to truly take affect. Took 3 years for this to become a mainstream conversation, of any type.
3) People’s empathy works best when it’s shown immediate, direct consequences of their actions. The video itself is over 8 minutes long with the turtle visibly in terrible pain, wincing and yelping as the straw is removed and bleeding profusely. A chart of oceanic waste or a dedicated study is never going to have the same effect, and certainly not going to make you think about it every time you see a straw.
4) You can’t control what goes viral. There is another video with a million views that features rescuers saving a turtle from a fishing net (statistically a much greater danger), and another saving a turtle from a plastic fork. But for some reason, the straw one caught the public eye.
5) But you can control the conversation afterward. The earliest advocacy was against all single use plastics, not just straws, but people managed to reduce it down to just a straw ban. Don’t let them negotiate down, keep to the course.
6) People need something to do. Advocacy is long and tiring and has no immediate payoff. Most people can’t afford the time and energy. What people can afford, however, is to skip their straws and know that there’s one less turtle in danger.
There is good news though, as just this year the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN made guidelines to eliminate waste from fishing gear, inspired by recent blowback against plastic waste. So just because it’s not the part getting press doesn’t mean that good, structural change isn’t happening. It’s just a lot less flashy than a starbucks straw.
I’d pay top dollar to watch this for an hour

in addition to this great thread, i recommend reading “how the irish became white” by noel ignatiev. i do expect a lot of fighting against these facts because these lies and myth are so ingrained and now have become a part of the community and the sense of self and pride of irish people.
