“So... We got the exploding diarrhea. Here's my advice for anyone who doesn't have it yet:
It's going to take a minute for the government to pin down where this is coming from, and then issue a recall, because the FDA has been gutted. But, I can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt : this is coming from Taylor Farms produce, and you will see them recalled.
You'll want to avoid all Taylor Farms produce in the grocery store. They supply McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, about any fast food place you can think of.
Raspberries, watermelons, cilantro, and the veggies you're hearing about are not causing this many people to get sick. It's the shredded lettuce, specifically, that's the problem. But, you'll want to stay away from every type of produce this company puts out, because one strand of shredded lettuce is all it takes to contaminate bushels.
Taylor Farms is the source. Taco Bell proactively pulled their produce from their restaurants. You're going to see other fast food places doing this, and probably will see that before the government names a source. The FDA knows this, but they can't come out and tell us all until there's proof, which takes resources and research, which takes manpower, but the FDA has been cut by about 20-30%
During the Biden term, onions at McDonald's had ecoli. We knew this because DNA testing was done quickly and they were able to narrow it down to one place that caused the outbreak. And, it was traced back to Taylor Farms. This isn't going to be solved as quickly though.
When you get this, make a virtual appointment to your PCP - a "same day sick" appointment. Tell them someone in your family just tested for this and was positive and was prescribed Bactrim. If you go in person, they're probably going to make you poop in a cup and wait until results come back to prescribe.
You'll know when you get this. Trust me on all of this.
You'll want to stay hydrated because this parasite damages the lining of the small intestine. Your small intestine, in turn, secretes more water into the gut, and less nutrients and liquid are able to remain in the body. So no matter how much you shit, you're going to want to drink. A day of this leads to dehydration if you don't increase your fluid intake, and a few days will land you in the hospital.
If you have headaches, weakness, muscle cramps, dizziness, or an increase heart rate - hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Go to the ER for fluids if you can't drink enough.

As an update, the OP of this post did eventually clarify that they did not have inside knowledge that it was Taylor Farms; that was a conclusion they reached from publicly-available information & history.
However, per CNN and numerous other news outlets, as of Thursday afternoon, the outbreak has been at least partially traced to lettuce supplied to Taco Bell from Taylor Farms, in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky.
Other states and/or businesses could have received the same contaminated lettuce, or there could be multiple simultaneous outbreaks with different sources: currently, it's not clear.
What Year Do the Main Events of Kaiju No. 8 Take Place?
I have been collecting every detail I can find to piece together a theory on what year the main events of the series take place in. I think I've finally collected enough that I feel like I can present my thoughts.
I will preface this by saying pretty much all the "evidence" I've found is still super vague lol you could definitely use it to argue that the series takes place in any number of years, it's not definitive AT ALL so this is all very much just my headcanon, there's nothing really concrete to say that I'm onto anything at all
But I wanted to put this out there nonetheless because this is the kind of thing I love spending my time thinking about so here we go
I'll start with this part from the light novel:
It's not super clear but I'm assuming they're referring to the element Ina Bauer, rather than Ina Bauer herself as she was born in 1941 and passed in 2014. The element Ina Bauer was made popular in Japan during the 2006 Winter Olympics:
Kikoru says this was "around" when she was born, which is pretty vague and I don't know that there's really any specific way to interpret "around". Kikoru's birthday is September 7th; the 2006 Winter Olympics were held from February 10th, 2006 to February 26th, 2006. If Kikoru was born in 2005, then she was born 156 days BEFORE the Olympics started. If she was born in 2006, then she was born 209 days AFTER the Olympics started. Since she says around, I feel it's more likely she was born BEFORE the Olympics, which means she was born in 2005. Kikoru is 18 (I'm not going to argue this point, she's 18) that would mean she turned 18 in September 2023. This would mean the entrance exam takes place some time in March of 2024.
The second "clue" I have is this page from Chapter 60:
Captain Ogata says the mole-type kaiju has been appearing "roughly" every 5 years since 1967. Again, I don't know that there's any exact way to interpret "roughly" but if you go every 5 years from 1967, you get to 2023. Now 2023 probably does make more sense than 2024 but if it's only "roughly" every 5 years, I do think that means it's possible it could show up in 2024 instead.
Of course, this also means that it could put the events of the series earlier than 2024. I think Matsumoto-sensei did say he modeled the Kn8 universe after real-life Japan as much as he could and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force raised their maximum age limit in 2018:
However, we know that the JSDF also exists in the Kn8 universe alongside the JAKDF:
Obviously this is a bit of conjecture on my part but I think it's possible that, in the Kn8 universe, the JSDF raised their maximum age limit first - in 2018 - and after a few years of observing the data, the JAKDF decided to follow suit.
There's also this exchange in the Kn8 game that hints to the events of the series taking place after 2019 at least:
There are a couple other minor things that I found that I thought were interesting but don't necessarily lend any clarity to what year the main events happened.

This is Kafka's BS2, the Kn8 equivalent of the PS2. The PS2 was released in Japan in March of 2000. Kafka says he "finally" got his parents to buy this for him, which - again - could really mean anything. He could mean they bought it weeks or months or maybe even a couple years after it was released. We don't know what the Hibino family's financial situation was like so it's possible this was something Kafka's parents had to save up for or maybe they were the type of parents who didn't like the idea of Kafka sitting in front of a TV playing games all day so it took a lot of convincing on Kafka's part or they said he had to wait until he was a certain age before they'd be willing to buy it for him.
We do know Kafka was 12 when the kaiju attack on his hometown happened, or at least that's the conclusion I've drawn from this age progression Matsumoto-sensei included with the final volume:
There's also the fact that Kafka was not required to take martial arts in junior high, which was a curriculum change that was implemented in Japan in 2006:
This makes it likely that Kafka was at the very least already in high school when this change was made, since he doesn't seem to be aware of it. If he had just started high school in 2006, he would have been 15, which would mean that he turned 32 in 2023. (Of course, he could have been older than 15 in 2006 as well.)
Personally, with everything that I've found and given the technology we see present in the series, I believe the main events of Kn8 (the entrance exam through the final battle with No. 9) take place in the year 2024.
That would mean the "epilogue" of sorts in the final chapter takes place in the spring/early summer of 2025 (still before August 5th since Kafka is 33 at the end of the manga, not 34) and I kind of like the thought that as we were reading the final chapter when it released in July 2025, it was also July 2025 in the Kn8 universe.

Narumi has a BS5, the Kn8 equivalent of the PS5. The PS5 was released in Japan in November 2020.
Based on the timeline I put together for Kn8, this scene with Narumi takes place sometime in July so that would put the events of the manga taking place AFTER November of 2020.

The final chapter of Kaiju No. 8 was released a year ago today
I still miss waiting anxiously for new chapters to drop and then seeing everyone’s reactions to them, it’s just not the same without Kn8 Thursdays but I’m grateful I found this series soon enough to experience a few of them!!
J: Miss Yhtil, I heard that you wanted to... speak... to... me...

Hi! So... yeah, I finally made a comic based on this character I have that I rotate around in my head quite often. I don't really get the chance to talk about him often, mainly because everything about him is more or less original (to me) and I just never really thought I would get the chance to really share any details about any of the many characters I hold pretty close to the chest. I came up with this comic a while ago and just recently finished it. I don't know if I'll ever really get the chance to get the story together and get it published like I want to, but at the very least I'll have introduced the basics of what I have in mind to somebody so I'll count that as a win!
For now I'll just dove a little bit deeper into the characters shown here and maybe a little bit of the overarching story and some details in the comic.

Johnathan Murphy (One of these days I'll settle on how I'm supposed to spell your fucking name.)
So as one could hopefully tell, he's the main character. In a world inundated with monsters popping out of mysterious portals in late Victorian England (or around there I haven't figured out when exactly this takes place- but for now think Steampunk or Dieselpunk era) He becomes Valedictorian of the First class of the first ever academy for Monster hunting... and just barely gets a job because all the older, more experienced hunters do NOT trust the academy whatsoever due to being fairly stuck in their ways.
He lands in a "clan" made up of the oldest players in the game who's whole shtick is that they are so old and experienced at their job that they take on anything that seems remotely dangerous and then sees if they can make it "interesting"... WITHIN REASON OF COURSE. For now most of the story in my head is just a lot of monster fighting, but there is some sort of Eugenics B-plot running through the background for some reason that I have no idea where it came from.
Oh and I guess i should mention that hes a half troll. Made of actual granite. Brazilian Blue Granite to be specific. And yes hes actually half Brazilian on his mother's (full troll) side. His father is a Scottish ex-army doctor.
Bonus detail is that originally he wasn't going to have glasses, but then I saw a short talking about the history behind plastic green visors and how there is an older form of those that are the green glasses to the right and I thought they looked so stupid they looped back to being cool, so I tried to put them on John but I hated how they turned out so I turned them back into regular glasses. They are still green though and instead of normal glasses arms I gave them chains instead (like the pic on the left)
Gentry Bloodchild.
The other man in question. Not much to say about him other than they were academic rivals and hes about three years older than Jhon. They had a bitter rivalry that started when John won the Validictorian position that Gentry feels was stolen from him, and it lasted for a while until they beat the shit out of each other and John got to have a one-on-one talk with Gentry about how dedicating his academic years to getting that position actually almost killed his career and how hes envious of how Gentry got to make friends instead. Needless to say, Gentry walked away with a new point of view and a way to finally let go of his need for his shitty father's validation. (The father becomes plot relevant later)
His outfit was modeled after old high ranking military uniforms and he was SUPPOSED to look like a short and wirey little shit but somehow ended up with the thighs and ass thats SUPPOSED to go to John. When I figure out how to draw stick thin and pretentious people his design will change. Bonus fact hes actually a widow here despite being 26.
Yhtil NoLastName (I have yet to figure out one for her because reasons.)
The leader of the clan, John's mentor, and what I'm hoping for her to be his narrative foil as well. Whether that comes across or not is yet to be discovered. She is also a half troll like John but she's modeled after a type of rock formation called a Desert Rose, specifically like the picture shown below. (I actually own one of these rocks but its at my parents place rn so god only knows where its at ) She technically the oldest of the group, although I don't know at what age specifically- but its definitely in the 100s. (Trolls live long lives and sometimes that trait can be passed down to half trolls)
Going into this, I only had a vague idea of what she was supposed to look like and I had decided to draw her portrait first to help with that, but her looks ended up looking slightly different in the comic itself, although I'm sure its hard to tell at the size she is depicted at. I'm kinda going for a sexual dimorphism thing between male and female trolls (I know that's not really obvious since both trolls in this example are half human) but I'm still going back and forth on where to draw the line. So far I've been debating on having females have like... plant growth for hair but I'm still not sure. The main point I'm trying to make here is that the weird little half circles on her neck are the ridges of the rock formations and there's also a little cluster right on the top of her hair line on her right/our left side of her head but you can't really tell because I can't fucking shade that small.
She's got a brother nick-named King who's not really her brother, its more of a half Aunt-but-I'm-so-entangled-into-your-life-I'm-basically-your-sister-anyway kind of situation. I'm also not sure what nationality she is because I haven't looked up where you find these desert rose rocks, especially these chunky pink variations- most that I've seen online have rather thin ridges and look white which I found interesting- not the point. Basically I'm doing a thing where trolls wear their lineage on their sleeve like how I make Jhon half Brazilian. As far as her name is concerned, I just struggle to come up with names for characters in general. I mean , for fucks sake I named the main character JOHN and I only settled on Gentry's like... last month. All I knew was that I didn't want traditional troll names to sound like they're a part of any modern language so I turned to The King In Yellow since I figured eldritch words had to be the furthest thing from comprehensible that I could think of. That and she's got a pink and yellow color scheme. Her skin is also pink and textured like the rock she's molded after I should probably mention.... yeah, those aren't really freckles I just didn't know how else to express that.
When will I see my wife, Jura Igarashi, in a swim suit. Devs stop being muscle girl phobic. Give me Jura in swim suit so I can drown my face in her boobs
