I am neck (haha) deep into this manga/anime. Hikaru Ga Shinda Natsu (The Summer Hikaru Died) is such a poignant exploration of what makes humanity lovely and terrible by juxtaposing an actual eldritch horror next to the everyday horrors of human hate.
Please check it out! I haven't loved a story this much in a long time <3

no dude it's so cool how attached you are to that character who is singled out and ostracized due to the external monstrousness that clashes with their internal spark of humanity. and i love how drawn you are to themes of horror and love, nature versus nurture, otherness, isolation, and the abject. i bet you have normal feelings about your own personhood

there's something about in the way some fans want a type of clousure between yoshiki and human hikaru that makes me admire how good the writting of this story is regardless of the grief of losing someone beloved. because the tragedy of it is that you don't get second chances or last words, death comes and what you get is just plain (and cruel on its simplicity) conclusion. as much as you feel like you had something to say or unfulfilled promises, this is it. and it hurts so much, you won't get all the answers, and you will never get to know the truth. reality only grant us its indifference, as consolation are just the memories and their legacy on us. This is why yoshiki is on a personal level such a human raw character; he's a very unreliable narrator regarding of who hikaru was, and what his sudden death meant to him. If there is any type of solution, it's just the acceptance of what happened, and allow himself to mourn and move foward in life. It's cruel, unfair, this is where this wishful thinking comes from, I know, but is it really necessary for us a second chance to come to value what we had?

Oh him ? That’s my “I love you so much” demon, he’s the demon whose main character trait is that he loves me so much. He doesn’t really understand the value of human life and sometimes he tries to eat my soul. Oh and yes, he does bite.
I love how the eldritch horror in tshd is punctuated with the much more visceral, familiar horrors of "recognized in the grocery store" and "ask your father a personal question"
i think that's what makes it so great. Having your best friend die and get posessed by a monster isn't really a day-to-day occurence, but those smaller horrors? Everyone has them. This also ties in with tshd being queer horror, because groing up in a small homophobic town as a queer person is just like that sometimes. The casual horror of everything, especially those close to you, hits so close to home
