Sometimes I think about how so much of what makes Murderbot who it is comes down to it being a rental SecUnit. When Leonide tells Arada in Network Effect that Company Units have a reputation for being dangerous, she's probably 100% correct. Because of their nature as plug-and-play security for anyone, they have to be designed to be far more versatile than the SecUnits a corporate like BE owns. Three has to be able to secure salvage operations and mining outposts and work with BE's systems and that's kind of it. BE might need its security to fend off hostile takeovers and workplace uprisings, but Murderbot has to be able to do all those things and planetary surveys with unknown hostile fauna, and asteroid mining belts, and whatever the next client might need it to do, and it has to be able to work with whatever other proprietary software the new clients have every single time. It's better at adapting to new situations than Three partly because it's older and more experienced, but also because that's a big part of its function.

And at the same time, Company SecUnits are treated much worse than Three by virtue of being rentals. Many--if not most--of Murderbot's clients didn't want to have any SecUnits, but were required to take them per Company rental agreements for other equipment. Even the ones who specifically did want SecUnits didn't have any investment in what happened to them. They were the equivalents of the U-haul you'd rent to move your couch across town. They just needed to do a job briefly and hopefully be in good enough shape to get their deposit back at the end, but if not, eh. No big deal. Murderbot has never had the same clients for very long, and it's never had to work with the same SecUnits for very long. Every contract changes. Nothing lasts.

No wonder MB loves fiction while Three loves nonfiction. Three has seen basically nothing about reality outside of its job and wants to know what's out there. MB has seen way too much reality and would like some breaks from that shit now, please.

Idle theory: The danger from rogue SecUnits is copaganda to keep people from helping SecUnits escape, and to keep them feeling like they need the human security to protect them. While most rogues aren't as into Sci-fi media as Murderbot, they mostly just get out if they can. Killing is their day job and work sucks. I'm not saying it's never happened, but it's extremely rare and amplified in the interest of keeping them divided.

#i think this is basically canon #with only a few exceptions we only see stuff from mb's pov and obviously that's limited and it is pretty biased #but i think narratively speaking we're told multiple times that the murde rampage secunit isnt much of a thing #i AM interested in the bloodthirsty combat secunit that mb encountered in exit strategy #and if that is supposed to be indicative of combat secunits as a whole or just that particular one #possibly martha wells herself doesnt know because i think that fandoms sometimes get too invested in the idea that writers know why #they write something. obviously they often do but a lotta time something just works or feels right or is convenient #not to try and take credit away from wells for her craft but ive simply been working on moderating my expectations of writers #but anyway yeah all our examples of free secunits are non murder rampage-y *so far*#for all we know that one unit in system collapse stayed with barish estranza because it wanted to do a lotta murder #but it specifically helped out mb and co. so it seemed nice #similar thing with the unit from platform decay #we dont KNOW so far that it doesnt mean harm but it seemed nice #also i think as a fandom we would largely agree that a construct murdering its 'owners' is different from murdering regular people #even if the construct murdered people who didnt own it but worked for those who did and upheld that system etc that's different #than slaughtering random people who have nothing to do with any of that shit #i think broadstrokes irl people dont wanna do the horrible things that have been done to them or get serious revenge #people DO sometimes perpetuate the abuse they suffered because they never learned it was wrong etc #but im pretty sure the statistics say that the majority of victims dont turn around and become perpetrators #i think the thing that wells has fixated on with these books is that people just wanna get out of the horrible situation they're in #and get some peace and quiet and freedom and relaxation #and i agree with her. obvs for narrative purposes mb cant seek out peace and quiet TOO much but still #anyway yeah copaganda for real on the murderous rampage thing

four chapters into the murderbot diaries and so far every single time someone has tried to talk to murderbot its response has been either "i was spacing out and didn't realize they were talking to me" or "thank god i wasn't spacing out that time and actually managed to respond." yeah i think i can see why tumblr latched onto this character so hard

Shoutout to Dr. Volescu for getting so traumatically injured in All Systems Red that he inadvertently convinced Murderbot to show its face and talk to him, unintentionally revealing to everyone that it was actually a person...

...and then going nope nope nope I want nothing more to do with this crazy story with giant alien animals that try to kill you, rogue secunits with their own agenda, corporate espionage, assassination attempts, alien contaminations that cause zombie apocalypses highly dangerous and irrational behavior, etc. and just... goes home after book one.

I do kinda hope he shows up in a future book, even if just to be like, oh things have gotten even more crazy since I left? welp, sure glad I got out when I did. Most sane character in the series.
