tell your baby that i'm your baby
You do owe the world things, actually. It’s just those things tend to be perfectly balanced.
You owe people respect and dignity; they owe the same to you.
You owe children kindness; as a child, you are owed a kind world.
You are owed nourishment by any world that brings you into existence, you are owed a chance to thrive. In return, you owe the same to any people or creatures you agree to take guardianship over.
The issue is not that we, and others, and the world in general, owe each other. We are all born being owed certain things, and by living we acquire debts; life requires this interdependence to thrive. The issue is that we are often misled as to what this actually means, by those who would take advantage of us. We are lied to by authority figures who do not want to respect us, or acknowledge their responsibility to us. Worse: we mistakenly come to believe that taking advantage of others is the key to restoring balance. We were cheated, so others must be cheated in turn.
We trap ourselves in these deadly cycles. Society betrays us so we are taught to disengage, to break it further. We are taught to forget the value of repair. We are taught to forget what is owed. Fundamentally, we are taught to forget that people are owed basic decency. When we say we owe the world nothing, we forget we are affirming the opposite: the world owes us nothing in return.
But this is so incredibly untrue. We owe the world things, and are owed in return, and that’s good, that is so so good. I would hate to live in a world where I didn’t believe people were fundamentally owed dignity and decency and kindness. The real issue is that these things often go unpaid, and unreciprocated. We think: “The world gave me nothing, though it should have. Why should I owe anything?”
And that is such a dangerous way to think. That type of thought just turns you into another gear in a destructive machine. That type of thought just allows despair to self-replicate. That type of thought validates the abusers and ensures there is never a shortage of victims. Feed those kinds of thoughts, and a plug gets pulled somewhere inside you, and lets the humanity drain away. You lose everything, trying to steal from others what was stolen from you. You cheat yourself and the world, with that kind of thinking.
I promise you this: When we try to balance the scales by refusing to pay forward what wasn’t paid to us, we just double the debt and burden the world in the process. A better world requires that we first do better.
Haven't watched happiest season yet but I made a meme that reflects most of what I've seen on here about it
thinking about how quill used music as his only reminder of his mother, to the point that he would risk his own life to save it and keep part of her alive, and how we're introduced to him as the one who dances while everyone around him rolls their eyes, and how he raises baby groot to be the first of the team to dance as openly and joyfully as him, and how this groot is the first one to dance during the last scene, and how rocket – who hums tunelessly while he works until he's building stereos to play tunes while fighting until his favorite song is "come and get your love" – joins him without any self-consciousness, and how quill left rocket his zune and team leadership but the first gift he ever gave him was a name for what he was: raccoon, and how drax overcomes his stubborn adherence to never dancing because what matters more to him than being a stoic destroyer is being a father, who makes the hundreds of children that look up to him laugh with delight, and who gets to watch mantis (whose innocence reminded him of his daughter) set off into the world with her own purpose the way his own child never got to, and how nebula dances along with them, no longer holding herself to the second-best status that thanos forced on her, instead at home as a leader who can fight with her family without having to compete with them, and how she stills talks to gamora, who is able to accept that she once meant the world to the guardians, once spoke their language and joined in their hugs and was part of their fun, but that she doesn't owe it to them to join in the dance and be that same person, and returns to the adoptive family that she feels at home with, and the lyric "leave all your love and your longing behind / you can't carry it with you if you want to survive," and how in order to go forward the guardians can't all stay together, but how that doesn't mean they aren't still a team and a family because how do you truly leave the people who have dragged you, doubting and kicking and screaming, toward comfort and security and happiness? for the hottest, slowest, laziest days to end, the ones where you lost best friends and spouses and children and siblings and years of your life and memories with someone, the ones where you run from your past and pretend you were never in pain, never loved anyone, you have to let that hope catch up with you (“happiness hit her / like a bullet in the back”). anyway i think this was a pretty good series like this post if you also had a laugh or two over cosmo the space dog's telekinetic hijinks!!
Everytime I see posts like this I get filled with such profound sadness
Cause you know who has the same brainrot as you? The same unhinged feelings as you after you've read the fic? The person who always wants to scream about the fic with you?
THE PERSON WHO WROTE IT
I never used to leave comments but since I got into the habit of commenting on everything i enjoy it's been incredible. Especially when the author gets back to me about it and we get to have a discussion of what other ideas they had. One writer replied to my comment with a 5 paragraph essay detailing the Floorplan of the building the characters lived in and it was incredible
Anyways this is all to say that if you find a fic that just makes you want to scream from the rooftops, leave a comment saying that to the author and maybe they will join you and you can scream incoherently together
the real reason gotg movies are the funniest marvel movies is because their characters have gone through the most trauma, and that’ll give you an elite sense of humour
I love Peter Quill's EMPATHY.
The second thing we learn about him (besides his love of music) is that he gets into fights with other boys because they "killed a little frog that didn't do nothing."
The filmmakers specifically give us a close up of HIS face when he notices that Rocket has scars on his back.
He goes to check on Gamora when the prisoners are trying to execute her, even though she tried to steal his orb and kill him and got him captured by Nova Corps.
He tries to keep Rocket and Groot and Drax from killing each other even though he has nothing to gain from keeping the peace, and he tries to comfort Rocket and looks distressed when Rocket says "I didn't ask to be taken apart and put back together over and over and turned into some little monster."
He has the most scenes of being willing to listen to insensitive Drax when Drax is trying to give advice.
Obviously he saves Gamora at the cost of his own well-being when she's stranded in space
He thanks Drax when Drax awkwardly proclaims them as friends, meanwhile Gamora snaps at him.
He rallies everybody into saving innocents and becoming heroes.
He notices Rocket, who has been nothing but a jerk to him, vaguely comparing himself to Yondu as a mean guy who miraculously didn't push his friends away. And then he makes this face,
Which is by far my favorite "Kind Starlord" moment, and says, "well of course not." Purely to comfort Rocket and reassure him that they're family, without actually SAYING all that mushy stuff, so Rocket keeps his pride without having to apologize.
And, you know, all of GOTG Vol. 3.
new meme format just dropped
Maritza sitting in the hospital room trying to explain about the secret quinces, the knife she made without her dad's permission, the ghost Yadriel accidentally summoned, the forbidden gay love affair he had with the ghost while stowing him away in his room, the mission to help the ghost reunite with his friends, Yadriel skipping school, Catriz trying to completely a sacrificial death ritual to summon a death god and Yadriel bringing four people back from the dead while almost dying himself in the process and Catriz getting dragged down to Xibalba also their goddess is useless:
Abeulita, Enrique and Diego, just waiting for Yadriel to wake up:
Beginning of Cemetery Boys: 🤗 No skipping school 🤗 Decorating calaveras 🤗 Listening to music 🤗 Cute flirting 🤗🤗🤗
End of Cemetery Boys: 💀 DEMON JAGUAR 💀💀 SUMMONING THE GODDESS OF DEATH WITH YOUR OWN BLOOD 💀💀 THROWING RELATIVES INTO THE FLAMES OF HELL 💀💀💀💀💀
This quote from Cemetery Boys has been on my mind lately:
“There's no way y'all have been around for thousands of years without there being one person not fitting into the 'men are this, women are that' bullshit." Julian sounded so convinced, so sure. His obsidian eyes locked onto Yadriel's. "Maybe they hid it, or ran away, or I dunno, something else, but there's no way you're the first, Yads.”
How many of my ancestors were queer? How many had similar feelings to mine, and had to hide them. How many died holding in that secret? I don’t know, but I cry every time I think about it.
Loving the theme of books with unbury your gays trope where the characters start off dead and then come back to life through the power of gay
