For those of you who do not know last year (1 year on the 14th!!) I started my own business called the Crux Collective. We do just about everything in the creative realm from screen printing to film production to consulting and even art shows. Over the past 2 months we’ve had the pleasure of helping an amazing individual get their business off the ground! Water Me Green was founded by Jacksonville resident Tito Sosa and is truly in a league of its own when itcomes to sustainability, local impact and urban farming. Requiring 90% less space, 95% less water and utilizing organic as well as hydroponic techniques #WMG will grow fresh, pesticide free produce for the entire Jacksonville area! Local businesses and families will have the ability to lease their own towers for their homes/businesses or purchase their produce grown locally at a much lower cost financially and environmentally! With over 80% of the US’s food supply coming from California we’re headed toward some hard times in the next few years. Demand is increasing and supply dwindling; we are on an unsustainable path. Drought and rising gas prices only make this situation worse. Families and individuals are already facing nutritional deficiencies due to rising costs, a stalled economy and financial hardship. Not to mention the toll it’s taking on our environment. The average household within the US produces approximately 48 TONS of greenhouse gases per year. Transportation of each household’s food accounts for 8 of those tons or about 17% of the total worldwide. Agriculture in general produces around HALF of ALL man-made emissions. That’s right, HALF of ALL man-mad emissions.. We as a nation, a community and species MUST decide NOW that we want better for ourselves, our children and our futures. Every single one of us can make a difference, we’re the only ones who will. And it’s not just about greenhouse gases, or cheaper food, it’s about changing our City and its economy. Water Me green will create jobs, GREEN JOBS, it will reduce food costs for everyone, not just restaurants and bars, but families like mine and yours and help feed the families and individuals in need at the local shelters and non-profits. Let’s face it, we need to create jobs, we need to pick up the slack left behind by cut social service programs, we need to slow, stop and reverse the effects of global warming and we need to change the fair trade laws. This is a daunting task and it won’t change overnight but we can make the decision that we will be the change we have all been waiting for. We can choose TODAY that we will wait no longer for others to do what we know needs to be done. We can decide TODAY that WE will change tomorrow.
