You know. I would say I am surprised.
Last year Marvelous EU had an RIF which included the folks responsible for the AWL remake creative marketing and pine hoverfly conservation initiative. If the really cool things they were doing to drive visibility and sales and contribute to good things were not enough to save them from the axe, think about the other folks that are seen in "lesser" positions.
Among the QA profession, Localization QA is often hit the hardest - with decisions being made that favor machine translation over authentic language transfer. You only have to read some of the forums/discussion areas to see the vitriol they get. It doesn't surprise me that a publicly traded company would decide to make spending cuts in their favor of profits, with LocQA being some of the first to go.
All of it comes at a cost to everyone except the executives. From the little folks on staff getting headcount reductions, to the players who suffer from the quality dip as a result. No one wins here except the folks at the top.
Please contact Marvelous and share your opinion and voice as a consumer. Vote with your wallet. Tell them if this bothers you. As we in the industry cannot.
