As an adult, I don't read much anymore. My ADHD makes it really hard to focus on, but I've found that for some reason reading in bars works for me. Something about the ambient noise and often low light creates the right combination of stimuli for me to be able to focus.

I was assigned to read this book for a class in college and never finished it, so over the past year or so I've been trying to finish it. It's an interesting perspective on Hugo Chávez's impact on the nation of Venezuela.

I haven't actually read more than a sentence of it, but I just had to post this because the bibliophile within me is sooo happy. The precursor to this book, that I had to read parts of before, is slightly older, and the copy I have is well used and has many infuriating notes and highlights in pen. This book however, is fresh, and crisp and just wonderful. The cover has that wonderful soft texture that a good new softcover will have, it has that wonderful new book smell that floats out as you open it to a new page, and the typeface is definitely one if my favorites. I don't know enough about typefaces to tell you what it's called, I just know I love it and that it makes me want to read it, despite being a textbook that's probably kinda dry.

The Physical Book: I’ve been reading my sister’s tiny copy of Pride and Prejudice for about a month now. I was suppose to read it in high school for AP Lit, but there were no reading journals, so I had no incentive, it was the end of the year, I was tired, and so I only read a few chapters. I’ve been really slow about getting through it, but read like 30 pages today, so that’s always nice. 

The Words in the Book: I keep thinking about the language, reading a book that’s about 200 years old. Silly as it is, I find myself thinking about how odd the evolution of language is, and how modern speech patterns, let alone slang, are so out of place. Perhaps it’s that everytime my internal monologue interrupts the book for a reaction, it’s that it’s in such a drastically different dialect than the one I’m reading in. 

Also, I feel bad for Mary, as weird or random as that may sound. Like, there’s times when the whole family is hanging out---except for Mary; and everytime she is portrayed, it’s as a vague embarrassment to the family. Like, she’s just a teenager, and at that, a middle child of five. That’s gotta be rough. I imagine her as kinda goth. She’d probably get on well with the Addams family.

Crit # 199: perfectimmelmannturn‘s Sorted Books

Unlike the artist who says she started the stack because she was drawn to the bottom book, I just so love the top book’s title and upon seeing it knew I had to do a critique for this piece. I’ve spent the last couple weeks doing some very important and stressful adult-ing (my term for tasks that require me to be an adult like moderating panels and hiring movers and buying plane tickets), so there’s something appealing about a sorted books whose focus is on the difficulty of adulthood. I wish the colors of the book jackets went in the opposite direction though, it feels as if the oranges and reds should be at the bottom as the stack descends into more dangerous territory. Though that green is kind of the color of an old fashioned poison bottle. Or an absinthe bottle – which is appropriate given that the trajectory of this Sorted Books made me think of ‘The Picture of Dorian Grey.’

I’m currently reading The Wicked Day by Mary Stewart, which is the fourth book in her Arthurian saga. While the other three primarily focus on Merlin’s perspective, this one focuses on Mordred’s. In fact the only mention of Merlin is “HE’s DEAD!” “Psych, no he’s not.” “MERliN is DEAd NOW!” “HA, nope.” “OK, this time he’s really dead, for real, we buried him.” “HAHAHA, NO HE’S STILL ALIIIIIVVVEEEE!!!!” Whether he will actually die as they say he will/has is a mystery to me, but it’s a very good book. I highly recommend this series. Although I do recommend having a Welsh pronunciation guide on hand if you don’t speak the language. It drives me nuts not knowing how to pronounce things, and also it’s easier to recognize characters like Sir Bedwyr when you know it’s pronounced (roughly) bed-OO-ur or bed-OO-EER. But it’s a great series, although kinda long and slow moving. I’ve been burning through this one though.

It's still Tuesday, so I'll Reviewsday Tuesday it up.

I'm reading various stories from this for my Creative Writing class. There's a lot of variety in the stories, but most of them I've found to be quite good (so far). Also Short Short Stories really means short; most of them are two or three pages tops. They are really nice little tidbits, and great if you wan to read, but only have very short spurts to do so at a time.

A play!? 

Yes a play. I do theatre, too, you know.

The Physical Book: So, this is my copy of the script for the production of Our Town I'm in currently. I play Si Crowell and Lady in a Box (how illustrious). It's been about seven years since I've been in a play where I used an actual book script (as the primary script, anyway. I had a libretto for the production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee that I was in but I never used it, plus that was a traumatic experience, but I digress). So yeah, it has notes and highlighting in it (usually something I avoid in books), but I'm not terribly attached to it yet.

The Words in the Book: It's a good play. I recommend trying to see it if you can. It explores theatre, as well as human nature. It's very sweet. The production I'm in is doing it very simply, and with a very matter of fact feel. What I mean by that is that we're not trying to hide the fact that the play isn't real life, which is usually what you do with theatre to some degree. It's very upfront. I like this play. It's very nice. It's about a small town in New Hampshire, set in the early 1900s. It's nice. I like it.

The Physical Book: I can't say much about this physical copy, because it came in the mail too late for me to actually use for my class. I always feel sad, resentful, and like I pity the book a little when that happens. But it does have the same typeface as several of my Wodehouse books, which is quite pleasant, although an odd association to make. 

The Words in the Book: I gave this a solid 3 stars on goodreads. Which is a lame way to start a review. It's good. If you haven't read it, I do recommend it. it's a classic Romantic novel, and an un-boring example of the genre (I've been told by various people [including lit teachers] a lot of romantic literature is not that great). Definitely interesting in an age where "Frankenstein" means something so different than the novel from which it originates. 

That said, Victor Frankenstein is kind of a whiney, wimpy, terrible person, which is a little infuriating. Reading it for a second time was rough, largely because of that.

Not bad though. Worth a read, though I would recommend a copy with an introduction (other than the author's), especially if you are unfamiliar with the genre or the historical context in which it was written.

 I found this in my uni library. It caught my eye as I was coming back from the bathroom, and I was amused to no end. This book is basically just a bibliography of books about books. I am amused by the meta aspect of this, although to be fair, I have been sitting in the section of the library dedicated to books on libraries lately and just giggling incessantly.
