i don't really like it when western mythological terms are applied haphazardly to essentially unrelated ideas. this is a completely lost battle but a lóng is really not a dragon, it is its own thing with only surface level similarities

i especially dislike many works that try to fold all sorts of different mythologies into a single consistent schema because they tend to heavily privilege western conceptions in doing so- see 'dragonology' books twisting basically every mythical reptilian under the sun into the mould of 'a species of dragon', implicitly centring the beowulf-style firebreather as the default from which all other mythologies derive, or basically anything that does worldwide vampire bloodlines

relatedly a qílín is not a unicorn, a fènghuáng is not a phoenix, and a jiāngshī is not a vampire, and it can impede understanding when they're approached from the standpoint of being the 'chinese version' of these concepts from western myth

I am glad that lavender broke through as a trend in NA because when I was a small child I went to my parents friends wedding and there was a bunch of lavender candies because the bride was British and it was like Her Thing and I LOVED THEM and I couldn't find anything lavender flavoured for literally ever after that but I love that I can just go into a cafe now and be like give me the lavender special please <3

On tumblr, you can say "don't stick a fork in that electric outlet in the wall, getting electrocuted that way is really bad for you", and people will reply with "but what if I use a knife? Is that dangerous too or am I allowed to do that?" And another one is like "op is lying it's actually 100% safe fun and cute uwu" because they live in a house with the electricity cut off. A third one goes "oh my god I had no idea I've been risking my life every single time I poke a fork at the wall. I just like the way the wallpaper feels when I puncture it. And then it explodes into an argument concerning whether or not getting electrocuted is inherently, ontologically bad for you or not, because someone shared their story of how getting electroconvulsive therapy cured their depression and saved their life, and therefore OP is wrong for implying that going out of your way to get electrocuted is always wrong and bad in every situation.

So currently I answer to my full first name (which I usually introduce myself with) as well as two nicknames/diminutives plus my last name when people mistake it for a first name. There are two or three other nicknames I've also gone by in the past. I'm perfectly fine with this, or neutral at minimum-- I have a common name and have had to be flexible with how I'm distinguished for my whole life. I also don't feel a deep and fundamental connection of my name with my identity, though I think going by another name entirely would confuse me.

A number of friends have been appalled at me being called names I don't say are my name. Which is really weird to me, although I'd go to battle for anyone else who was getting either deadnamed or called something they didn't want. But this perspective seems surprisingly common!

How do you feel about being called something other than the name you introduce yourself with?

I think it's fun if people give me (non-derogatory) nicknames or shorten my name

I don't care if people call me something else and will answer to it

I'm mildly uncomfortable or annoyed but won't make an issue of it
