We write for ourselves, but we post for others.

(this came out of a conversation in the comments on a previous post about an author threatening to stop updating a fic because of lack of engagement)

So there’s this idea that fic writers should write for themselves and not care too much about stats or engagement,

and i totally get the sentiment behind that. if writing becomes entirely about stats and external validation, something important does get lost - creative freedom and joy, conviction in your own writing

but i also think:

“i write for myself, but i post for others.”

because posting fic is not only self-expression. it’s social. ao3 is called an archive, but emotionally it often functions as a community space.

people post for connection, for participation, for others to bear witness to their pain and trauma and grief,

and i don’t think most people are asking to be admired so much as acknowledged. there’s something deeply human about wanting another person to encounter something that mattered to you and go:

“ok, yeah, I see what you were trying to say. I see you.”

especially because fanfic is often people processing very real feelings through fictional characters at a safe distance, one step removed,

and then uploading that deeply personal thing into a shared archive and hoping somebody else might connect with it.

And i think that’s why it hurts so much when you summon up the courage and post a fic into the void and you get nothing back,

and then it’s like,

does anyone see me? does anyone even care?

Some Lottie x mc moments because why not? I love their dynamic. There friendship might not be as chaotic as daniel's or as bubbly as ivy's but it's something more warm and assuring. Lottie is the safe space mc desperately needs with all the shenanigans they go through. I didn't think much ofnthis season but i changed my mind after so many cute moments with Lottie 😊

Here she is, my (our) favourite girl Lottie, as the Fool equivalent of the [III - Revel] card.

Lottie is loyal AND brave AND clever AND mischevious so I found it hard to place her in a house, but finally I gave her the Hufflepuff colors again because I thought out of all the things, she would value kindness most.

A bold call marks the start of something new.

Traditional lobotomizing of all the characters aside (seriously, you know things are bad when Robyn is the voice of wisdom), I think the current season's story is very fun. Though the apparent lack of communication between Hogwarts and the Ministry is a bit baffling to me.

I'm not entirely clear on what happened at the end of the chapter. A meteor shower? Dragon fire? Another one for the arson counter? I suspect that we won't succeed in protecting the creatures from Zara this time, and that will finally give us an excuse to go to the desert. Perhaps that's just my delusion talking, since my predictions are almost never right. I did guess that Zara would Obliviate someone, though I didn't think it would be us again.

Also, the dialogue has been fixed, for anyone who hasn't replayed the latest chapter yet.

A Shadow Unbound discussion part one

New season, that means a new owner of the singular brain cell that exists in this plotline. Morrow had it last season, for anyone else who's keeping track.

We knew the footprints were Kellen's because... they were too big to belong to anyone else, I guess?

We really fell for the oldest trick in the book. It's not our turn for the brain cell.

"Next time, tell us before you chase after a notorious poacher alone," Kevin says. Except I told him exactly what I was going to do. Not his turn either.

Oh god, I think Robyn has the brain cell. We're doomed.

...How does one polish a suit?

Why are we stunned to discover, for at least the fourth time, that there are poachers working at the Ministry?

The one thing that is consistent in a saga littered with retcons is the fact that Kellen is very much not over losing Shouren, and it's hilarious.

I'm not convinced that making Kellen lose his temper and then suggesting he kill us is our best escape plan.

SUBTERFUGE! I'll trick Kellen by doing... exactly what he wants... I'm so good at this.

He's trying to make us replace Shouren... dude, Shouren left you however many years ago. It's time to move on.

So... is Kellen dead? And we're hiding in a closet with a bookmark. I assume McGonagall will show up and rescue us. Then we'll show the bookmark to Shouren and it will unlock a core memory or something and he'll be happy that Kellen ended up changing. Then I'm sure we're setting up for some incredibly cheesy moment where we write our essay about Kellen.

Finally getting around to covering the last chapter of this season.

Ah yes, I'm perfectly disguised as Borgin with my glowing purple wand. The way he runs is so funny.

Perhaps you could have been arresting people before now, then? What exactly are you waiting for? I agreed to your plan with the expectation that you would actually DO SOMETHING.

Was that spell meant to be for us? Because if so, his aim was way off.

My character was wearing the Scorched Streetwear outfit, so she was just goofily breakdancing in the background of all these tense showdowns.

Aaaand the arson counter is up to three. Seriously, this is getting old.

Of course I saved the creatures. If you just let Ewan and Shouren fight it out, Ewan gets clobbered. Some head Auror he is. I hope Basil Jones was one of the less fortunate patrons.

NetEase, if this turns out to be you taunting us again...

Once again, I feel there's a part to the Ministry season that I missed. We were there for ONE DAY, and did literally no training. And then Ewan randomly built an obstacle course for us in the Department of Mysteries.

Anyway, next season looks good. We're supposedly getting pets, but I have no faith after being taunted for eight months, so we'll see. I hope it's true, though.

Clues for next season

Looks like someone doesn't want the Aurors snooping around in their poaching operation 👀

Seems like whoever's covering for the poachers is getting a bit too obvious... it won't be long before things fall through.

Hmm... who would that someone be?

But there's no reason for our character to know this. You know who they HAVE seen using memory charms? Zara Fishlock.

So it looks like next season will be about taking down the poacher's Ministry connection (which I believe is Zara), dealing with that star thing in the forest, and probably finishing Estella's story.

Now I finally have an excuse to share one of my theories about the poachers. Qui's parents both died, but she was homeschooled. Who did she end up with? My theory is Zara. It fits because they both use memory charms, and Zara also "adopted" Estella. One big unhappy family committing crimes together.

At this point the battle against the poachers is the real main story of Magic Awakened. There are three pre-global stories, and now we're setting up for our FIFTH season. Compare that to four measly year stories and we have a clear winner.
