it's carrie. again. i'm about $25 in the red between my bills, a canadian store charging me way too much, and helping my fiancée eat and such. i don't get paid until the 5th of june and i have like, too much in bills before then. i have like, 20 hours on this upcoming check and i'll have maybe 14 the next and i can't survive on this. i'm just looking for $100 to fix my balance and get a little ahead on bills. looking for new work just isn't going well

torrents work like this

i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3

unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it

i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map

i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs

this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.

crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.

thinking about how I reread The Verbally Abusive Relationship for the first time in over a decade and noticed how much emphasis Patricia Evans puts on shouting, clapping your hands, slamming them on the table, and yelling “CUT IT OUT” and “STOP THAT RIGHT NOW” when you realize you’re being verbally abused because it’s a violation of your autonomy and personhood that needs to be shut down as soon as it occurs. I was always taught the exact opposite: to get really quiet and professional and give zero emotional reaction. Now I’m starting to suspect this was gendered horseshit.

It can also depend on the abuser and the situation. The Grey Rock method is useful in some situations, while the "CUT IT OUT" method suits others.

If the abuser uses any reaction as a springboard for further abuse, the Grey Rock method starves them of fuel.

If the abuser is reliant on a quiet victim then shouting them down can be a useful pattern interrupting method that leaves them confused.

You also need to take into account whether the victim can easily escape the situation should the abuse turn physical, if there are children around who need at least one stable, even tempered adult, or if there is some task that absolutely has to be completed between abuser and victim. These all influence the choice of abuse response.

yeah I’m feeling more and more skeptical about the gray rock method these days! It suited me when I was younger and more afraid of conflict, but now I’m old and crusty and confident enough to reap the benefits of pushing and instigating and dragging everything out into the open. If someone can be driven nuts by the presence of a spine and boundaries and self-esteem, I want them to lose control of themselves as quickly as possible. Radioactive rock.
