It sure is hard being a videogame character and Knowing About It.

Subnautica's F8 to report bugs was so iconic to me for some reason I assumed it was a video game standard I just never heard of until now.

Also, good news! Most if not all of my scripts are fine after Ch5. Might get some mild adjustments for new context.

ugh, this is probably the worst example of how out of character Susie feels this chapter.

why in the heck (hell) would Susie “I wouldn’t have an ending” Deltarune say this???

in what world is it in character for her to call the lightworld “real life” as opposed to the darkworld???

and then she insists that Ralsei and the darkworld are all real despite saying this two seconds ago for no reason.

like, I get that she’s interested in hanging out with Noelle now too, but you could communicate this in so many other ways that didn’t involve her going against every single one of her beliefs.

she’s not even saying this for Noelle, she barely even understands what she’s talking about, there was literally no reason for her to say it like this.

she could’ve just said “it’s not time for school dumbass” or just said she wanted to go to the festival, and it would’ve achieved the same thing WITHOUT fucking up her character.

FUCKING WHY?????

the characters are supposed to grow and change as they experience the story. that's the whole point of a story.

i think susie was once satisfied with living entirely in the dark world, even after learning it's not "real", because she had nothing but kris going for her in the light world. but after growing closer to other people in the light world, specifically noelle, it seems like shes realized that perpetually indulging the fantasy of the dark worlds prevents her from forming meaningful relationships outside of it.

i thought this part in particular was really important because it shows how susie has grown. and i think what pushed her over the edge is that real people have now been pulled into the dark world. she even says herself that things have gotten too dangerous to keep pretending that it's all just a magical adventure. asgore and undyne are in real danger and they need others to help, and susie is such a kindhearted person shes willing to admit that she isnt strong enough to save them on her own. that's major character growth!! shes lived her whole life forced to use her strength as a sheild to protect herself, but now that she has people she cares about shes no longer afraid that those people will abandon her at the first sign of vulnerability, she's willing to compromise on her own desires if it means helping others.

this is the exact kind of character development susie was always meant to have. the fantasy of the dark worlds was never meant to last forever, and even susie "i wouldnt have an ending" deltarune cannot deny that change is inevitable. no matter how tightly you grip the present, it will always become the past, so lets look forward to a bright future instead.

yeah, characters grow, this is the opposite of that.

this goes against all of Susie’s development from the previous chapters.

“indulging the darkworlds prevents Susie from forming meaningful relationships outside of it” I’M SORRY? DID WE FORGET ABOUT KRIS? even if we make this all about Noelle, the only reason Susie was able to get to know her is BECAUSE of the darkworlds, their first meaningful interaction was in chapter 2.

the darkworlds have been EVERYTHING to Susie through the entire game, if we want her to start finding value in the lightworld as well, it would make much more sense for her to do that without denigrating the darkworld in the process.

why is Susie suddenly stuck in this weird predicament that the two worlds are somehow mutually exclusive despite being undeniably connected?

at the end of the chapter Susie finally does something that feels in character, calling the darkworld her home and preparing to bring Noelle into it.

but this doesn’t feel earned at all because the entire chapter Susie has been trying to force herself to live in Noelle’s world instead.

why did she suddenly switch in the first place? and what made her switch back by the end of the chapter?

it feels like Susie had an arc this chapter, but we didn’t get to see any of it.

“real people are being pulled into the dark world” didn’t we just say that the darkners are real people? are we really going to start taking Ralsei’s self deprecating position that darkners don’t matter?

do we really want Deltarune to take the boring ass stance of “escapism and fiction is BAD”?

Sorry to burst your bubble, this was meant to be just a way to get the player to focus on the festival as the game's focus was in It at that point. It had nothing to do with their character development.

this isn't even just about this one little line of dialogue, it's about Susie's characterization throughout the entire chapter. I've SAID this.

Toby Fox has always been incredibly intentional with the way he writes every single line of dialogue, so out of respect for the game I will judge it properly and criticize it.

I will not turn a blind eye to what seems like writing flaws, and I will not make excuses for them just because I love the game.

I prefer to consume things mindfully and critically, if you don’t like that I suggest you don’t interact with this post.

I can also be very emotional at times, so I understand how it feels to see criticisms that don't sit right with you. But I hope you understand that my criticisms come from a place of love for the game and wanting it to be the best that it possibly can. Criticism is not a bad thing.

You don't need to agree with me to be valid, it's okay if you don't care as much about these details as I do. I enjoyed the chapter a lot despite these grievances, and I'm glad you can enjoy it your way too.

Also, I'm afraid you misread my bio, I don't use he/they "to see what's funniest". I use he/they OR whatever is funniest at the moment, meaning I don't really care about what pronouns people use for me as long as it's lighthearted and fun.
