If your social justice does not involve Jews, or only involves Jews of Color and excludes white Jews (because you don’t regard white Jews as being oppressed on the basis of being Jewish) your social justice is shit and so are you.

If your social justice only cares about Jews when it pertains to pitting them against each other (like using Jews of Color as props to show how bad white Jews are and then ignoring their actual issues), then your social justice is shit and so are you.

If you ignore Jewish voices who try to point out antisemitism when it masks itself as merely being anti-Zionist in favor of shouting them down, then your social justice is shit and so are you.

If you think that your stance of anti-Zionism is an automatic “get out of being called on antisemitism free card” when you talk about Israel/Palestine, then your social justice is shit and so are you.

If you dismiss Jews who criticize your anti-Zionism by assuming that they are Zionists, or if you goysplain to them that anti-Zionism does not equal antisemitism, but ignore the fact that there is a very real an undercurrent of antisemitism infesting the movement that needs to be called out,  then your social justice is shit and so are you.

The term ‘Israeli Arab’ baffles me. Not only is it used to erase the Palestinian identity but it also disregards Israeli Jews who are of Middle Eastern or North African origin, who are often referred to as Mizrahi Jews. Within Israeli society, they are discriminated against and white Jews hold more privilege over them. Heck, there are Mizrahi Jews who get stabbed because they “look Arab”! Well heck, Jews of Arab background exist too. It furthermore shows how racist Israeli society is.

While I am not a Mizrahi (and I thus cannot speak for them) I can offer you my own experience in regards to Jewish identity as it relates to diaspora countries.

My family came from Russia and Poland, countries whose inhabitants are of the Slavic pan-ethnicity.

Despite the fact that my family lived in those countries for generations during the diaspora, and the fact that I undoubtedly carry Slavic DNA, I will NEVER call myself a “Slavic Jew”.

The reason being for this rejection of the label is that those Slavic countries made it VERY clear that we did not belong there and never would when they persecuted them and forced them to come to the United States.

I thus self-identify only as an Ashkenazi, because that label is specific to Jews and only Jews. I have absolutely no sense of shared heritage with the countries that threw my forbears out.

I certainly do not begrudge other Jews self-identification with their respective diaspora countries (many American Ashkenazim do self-identify with their diaspora countries) but how one labels oneself can be very personal and emotionally charged.

And just as not all Mizrahim came from Arab countries, not all Ashkenazim came from Slavic countries, so it wouldn’t work as an overarching label anyway.

Honestly, in light of my parallel, objecting to the term “Israeli Arabs” being used only for gentiles seems like objecting to the term “Slavic-Americans” being used to designated only gentile Slavic-Americans. There’s a very good reason for it: Jews (of all sub-groupings) are in their own over-arching ethnic group, which is “Jewish-American”. We are ethnically distinct from the people of our diaspora countries.

I could, under some definitions of the term, be called a “Slavic-American” but that be a misnomer.  It isn’t “erasure” of my history to not include me as a “Slavic-American”, because that term doesn’t fit. My ethnicity on that side of my family is Jewish, and my diaspora country of origin doesn’t change that, despite any Slavic admixture.

I have literally never heard of a Jewish-American objecting to not being placed under the XYZ-American label.

When it comes to issues regarding Israel/Palestine, I take the principle of not attributing to malice that which can be explained by mere ignorance. I myself have made mistakes out of ignorance that resulted in me being accused of being a “genocide defender”.

Assuming things about people when they talk about Israel/Palestine is what leads to potential dialogues turning into screaming matches. 

I gritted my teeth a bit at the post too, but I decided to try to make it a teachable moment rather than shout her down.

Even if we assume the worst about her, engaging with her actually created a productive discussion among Ashkenazim and Mizrahim, both diaspora and Israeli on the term “Israeli Arab”, which I myself was admittedly a little confused about it.

I am also fearful of antisemitism and anything but complacent. But snarling at some twenty-year-old  in Iraq over the Internet  isn’t going to help.

The term ‘Israeli Arab’ baffles me. Not only is it used to erase the Palestinian identity but it also disregards Israeli Jews who are of Middle Eastern or North African origin, who are often referred to as Mizrahi Jews. Within Israeli society, they are discriminated against and white Jews hold more privilege over them. Heck, there are Mizrahi Jews who get stabbed because they “look Arab”! Well heck, Jews of Arab background exist too. It furthermore shows how racist Israeli society is.

I’ve also only seen the term Israeli Arabs used specifically to talk about Mizrahi Jews in occupied Palestine in a way to misconstrue how Palestinians are treated. In a way to say look we treat our Israeli Arabs really well, pay no mind that this isn’t actually a Palestinian whom that term is usually reserved and dies not get treated in this way with this level of privilege comparatively, just pay attention to the fact that they are Arab and in occupied Palestine and we are using them for propaganda purposes.

It is and it is also simultaneously used by Israelis to erase the Palestinian identity by refusing to call them Palestinians.

If you are calling out “White Jews” specifically, and you are NOT a Jew of Color, then you really need to watch what you’re saying because any non-Jew is capable of being anti-semitic. Sorry. Personal rant.

Boy oh BOY do I LOVE going out on a huge limb for someone to do them a favor only to have them turn around and tell me that they don’t even want to talk anymore because they’re mad at me over something.

I sure do LOVE thinking everything is fine between me and person  when it isn’t and then having them just suddenly tell me out of the blue that they are mad at me and no longer want anything to do with me.

It would be one thing if that person had TRIED to communicate their feelings to me and resolve the conflict like a mature adult, but instead they just acted like everything was totally cool between us and then just up and told me they want nothing to do with me.

It sure would be FUCKING SWELL if I were give the benefit of the doubt for once in my life and to have had that person at least TRY to communicate their feelings towards me and work the issue out.

But of course that’s WAY TOO MUCH FOR LITTLE OL’ ME TO ASK.

YEP. Let’s not try TALKING to me! Or expressing even the slightest bit of annoyance with me over what pissed him off so badly! Let’s not COMMUNICATE like adults!

CLEARLY I SHOULD HAVE USED MY MIND READING POWERS TO HAVE MAGICALLY KNOWN HOW THEY FELT AND SOLVED THE PROBLEM THAT WAY!

PSA - Social justice and Jews

If your social justice does not involve Jews, or only involves Jews of Color and excludes white Jews (because you don’t regard white Jews as being oppressed on the basis of being Jewish) your social justice is shit and so are you.

If your social justice only cares about Jews when it pertains to pitting them against each other (like using Jews of Color as props to show how bad white Jews are and then ignoring their actual issues), then your social justice is shit and so are you.

If you ignore Jewish voices who try to point out antisemitism when it masks itself as merely being anti-Zionist in favor of shouting them down, then your social justice is shit and so are you.

If you think that your stance of anti-Zionism is an automatic “get out of being called on antisemitism free card” when you talk about Israel/Palestine, then your social justice is shit and so are you.

If you dismiss Jews who criticize your anti-Zionism by assuming that they are Zionists, or if you goysplain to them that anti-Zionism does not equal antisemitism, but ignore the fact that there is a very real an undercurrent of antisemitism infesting the movement that needs to be called out,  then your social justice is shit and so are you.

If you accuse someone who defends Israel on any issue whatsoever of defending the occupation and by extension, of being complicit in it, then your social justice is shit and so are you.

If you ignore the fact you can unintentionally further antisemitism and/or hold unconscious antisemitic views by virtue of your gentile privilege, then your social justice is shit and so are you.

If you pride yourself on being an ally to oppressed groups, but scoff at the idea that Jews even *need* allies, especially if they’re white, then your social justice is shit and so are you.

Stop being shit.

Or at least, make an effort to learn.

This is interesting.

Almost every time I’ve called out black people for antisemitism  I’ve been told pretty much to go fuck myself because I’m white, had my anger framed as white person complaining about “reverse racism”  and how fucking DARE I claim oppression on the axis of ethnicity. I’ve gotten this even from intersectional feminists.

I’ve also repeatedly antisemitism framed as striking back at the white establishment.

I have no idea what happens to black Jews but antisemitism takes a distinctive form among black people that  I don’t see among white people. 

And no, obviously, not all black power groups and certainly not all black gentiles. That’s absurd.

But its enough black power groups and black gentiles that its a problem.

And GOLLY GEE WHIZ it sure would be SWELL if it were addressed.
