Gene is by far the side with the most outfit changes. Every time he appears its different. Usually its various ill-fitting suits. Sometimes its an oversized t-shirt and basketball shorts. A polo and jeans. A pullover. Khakis. Its always different, new, and nothing ever fits him. Everything is too loose. The suits make him look like David Byrne. But the most noticeable part is the color. Pink. Its like his entire wardrobe was washed with red and came out stained. Its clear he resents it, but its a part of his being. Everything is fucking pink.
If we have to label him one or the other, he is a dark side. If there's one thing we know about Thomas, its that he represses anything that makes him uncomfortable. For Thomas's entire childhood he pushed away the strange feelings of wrongness. He ignored and ignored until one day he was forced to look. He found the words somehow. He came out somehow. He started transitioning somehow. But even through that acknowledgement of the issue, and the treating of the symptoms, he still repressed. Hard. Because sometimes dysphoria is irrational and angry and ugly. Sometimes its a sickness that gets worse the more you ignore it. So if he must be labeled, Gene is a dark side.
All the sides know about Gene. He damn well made himself known with the whole coming out situation. Blowing up in their teens and sending everyone spiraling and debating and arguing as they do. After that incident, he's pushed back down. Not fully. Not Remus level repression. Gene is a constant shadow. He pops up every time Thomas crosses his legs instead of man spreads. When Thomas slips into a higher pitch when he's excited. These stupid little pangs. He shows up and squeezes Thomas's insides and screams "this isn't right this is wrong wrong wrong they're looking they're staring you're a faker god why cant you just man up!" and is promptly shoved back into the darkness. He can't help it. Nobody wants to look at him, and he knows it, and frankly why would they? From their perspective, all he does is criticize and whine and shove distressing thoughts at Thomas like he's just trying to ruin his day.
It's so easy to classify him as a dark side. What use does he have? All he does is pop in to drop his two cents on how horrible Thomas looks and then dip for a month. Or constantly torments Thomas for weeks until he goes to get that haircut. Sure, Thomas feels better once he has it, but that has nothing to do with Gene. Sure, Thomas looks in the mirror and can't stop grinning, and the warmth spreads from his chest up to his cheeks, and he's just glowing with "I'm handsome I'm me I'm me it fits its really me!" like a pink mantra that follows him for months. How could Gene have anything to do with that feeling? That's gotta be Patton or something. Just the product of a nice haircut. How can you equate Gene, the side that bullies and pushes until Thomas cries and screams "its not fair I was born this way", with the euphoric feeling that comes with.. euphoria.
He can't equate the dysphoria and the euphoria as being two sides of the same coin. Despite going to pride, and yelling about his gayness from the rooftops, he only associates his transness with negativity and pain. Any trans joy he feels is just coincidental. Its a bad experience. Its a burden. Just treat the symptoms until it shuts up.
So when Thomas buys from the men's section, gets that haircut, has top surgery, Gene lights up cotton candy pink. He hops up and down and waves his hands around and pulls his hair and buzzes in utter giddiness. But he does it downstairs. He lets Thomas feel it, but feel like its some other side giving him this joy. Thomas wouldn't look anyway, wouldn't thank him if he showed his face.
