Masquerade
Recently I read someone criticising my fics, saying that I 'take the angst too far'. While that may be true, I do think I'm better at angst than fluff, and I enjoy writing conflict more anyway. But since then I find myself unable to finish anything, second-guessing myself and freezing at the idea that maybe I'm writing 'too much angst' and people won't like it. I feel awful giving perfect strangers that much power over me but I also can't stop thinking about it, ugh.
Yeah, especially when you get few feedback anyway, negative one can really freeze you up. But please remind yourself that if your style isn’t to the taste of that particular reader, it might be exactly to the taste of another. One person’s ‘too much angst’ is another’s ‘delicious’ - with every stylistic choice you’ll divide your readership, and that’s a good thing.
There can’t be stories that suit everyone’s taste, so do your thing without thinking too hard about it. I’m sure that the angst-loving readership will come begging for more.
(also Team Angst all the way ftw)
To all those celebrating, Merry Christmas!
