Finally found a transfer method that works!
For these I used Liquitex gel medium to transfer the images from paper to wood. The image on the left was printed with what I assume to be a laser jet printer, and on the right is from my own printer (inkjet).
As much as I might prefer the look of the one on the right, I need the graphic clarity of the first one to communicate the tokens allocated to that flower.
Finally made some pieces to play with! It’s so exciting to see everything starting to come together.
Lasercut from bamboo plywood. Bamboo is a super sustainable material.. and it looks pretty neat too. Get some here (x)
Hedge Mustard, Fuchsia and Dandelions.
Experiments on plywood. I still really like the watercolour versions but I can see why everyone else seems to prefer the more graphic approach. It’s a lot clearer, just a shame about the way it seems to have bled. Might have to use an alternative method to transfer the graphics onto wood.
After getting feedback from the critique, I went to redesign the layout of my tiles. Inspired by Marimekko designs.
I’m hoping to be able to print these using a wood filament like bamboo for its sustainability.
Version #2
This one went much more smoothly than the previous version, there’s a few tweaks still to make but I think I’ve finally got to a point where I can finally start designing the pieces. This version only involves one bee per player, but two kinds of token. Nectar (big blobs) is collected from flowers, and pollen (the little blobs) from chance cards (roll a 6 or land on a chance tile). The next version will have nectar and pollen on flowers.. I’ll just have to do a bit more flower research!
I’ve decided I want a natural look for my game, so I bought some freezer paper to try out printing on wood. The lighter details won't show up on dark surfaces like this mdf, so I’ll need to find a brighter eco-friendly alternative for the real thing.
Playtesting by myself to work out mechanics of the game. Each flower has a specific set of ‘weeks’ that it’s in bloom within the game. Weeks are represented on the right, and counted with each turn. Each player starts with a queen bee, turning over flowers and collecting enough tokens to make at least one worker bee (3 tokens). To make a worker bee, the queen must return to the hive. She cannot leave again. With the tokens collected, you must then make worker bees (which live up to 6 weeks) and fill up your hive as quickly as possible. Once your hive is full, you can make a male and a new queen bee (you’ll no longer need the hive). You must find and mate with a bee that isn't yours to beat the game. Everybody loses if the time is up before new bees are mated.
The first version was way too easy, since there were flowers completely surrounding the hive. The second play lasted slightly longer with a different layout but one hive was killed right at the start which takes away some of the fun.
When I played this with my housemates, they agreed that it was a bit complicated (everything had been entirely in my head up till this point). It was great to receive their feedback and I will be making some changes that take what they said into account. One of the comments made was to make it more competitive which I completely agree with - the co-operative aspect didn't work quite as I had expected it to, and the game was much more enjoyable when we were playing against each other.
Back to the drawing board!
Got myself some free seeds for bee-friendly flowers.
