THE HAT RULE
ʙᴏᴅʏɢᴜᴀʀᴅ-ʙᴇʏᴏɴᴄᴇ
pair: Jack Abbot x f!Latina (Alicia)
warnings: mention of fainting, reader described as feminine, mentions of hooking up, hat rule
dual pov: Alicia/Jack
word count: 1.1k
You had the night off and were going to go to a rodeo with some friends. But right before you leave your friend Alondra passes out and you have to bring her to PTMC.
Abbot wasn’t expecting you to come in since you had the night off as you've been bragging since your last shift together. Imagine the shock on your face when he sees you walking in the ambulance bay wearing boots and a cowboy hat on.
“Abbot you need a hobby, seriously you can't be here all the time.” Dana said to him while he was sitting at a computer charting his patients medications. To be fair he was a couple hours early for his shift but it didn't matter. He couldn’t sleep and he truly had nothing else to do. So he thought why not go back to work?
“Ive got a shelf that could use fixing if your up for it Jack.” She says looking down at the iPad in her hand.
“You know what, I might just take you up on that offer Dana.” He says finally finishing up his notes and sitting up from his chair. “Well not now cause we’ve got an incoming trauma 2 minutes out.” Dana said, looking up at him with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
As if right on cue paramedics come in with a woman on a gurney and- Is that you? “Dr. Gonzalez, what are you doing here?” He says almost amused and god is he glad to see you. You looked breathtaking, he’d never seen you not wearing scrubs. Not that you didn’t look just as beautiful in scrubs but this- this was different. You were covered head to toe in denim. Jeans that hugged your hips in the best way possible. A shiny Belt buckle adorning your waist. A denim halter top that reveals a perfect amount of your cleavage. Christ, he thought he was in heaven. You looked gorgeous.
Mohan had already jumped onto the case with Robby asking you all kinds of questions. You walked to Dana telling her important information and asking if there was anything you could do other than stand in the corner and just watch. “Abbot, what are you doing here so early?” You say snapping him back to reality. “Oh you know, working like everyone else. Are you going somewhere?” He says looking you over for the 3rd time since you've walked into the ED. “Uhm yeah I was supposed to go to a rodeo with some friends but uhm she collapsed before we could even leave so I guess we're not going anymore.” You say with a tone of disappointment in your voice. “Well I think you look very nice, cowgirl.” Dana says easing the tension between you two. “Aw, thank you Dana.” You say blowing a kiss at her before walking to the Trauma Room your friend was in.
“Oh you’ve got it bad Abbot.” Robby said quietly, chuckling next to him. Jack's head snapped towards his direction. Was he that obvious? There was no way he noticed it. “I don't know what you're talking about Robby.” he says feigning confusion to Robby's comment. He looks at you once again walking out of the Trauma Room and back to the main hub. “Take a picture, it might last longer, Abbot.” You say jokingly as you pass by where he was standing. He was screwed. “In that outfit? I might just have to Gonzalez.”
You flirted with everyone so he knew not to get worked up about it. But he couldn’t help feeling a warmth in his chest whenever you would say something to him. He felt like a teenager with a crush on a popular girl that would never like him. Okay he's being dramatic but he seriously didn’t know what he was going to do with his feelings for you.
“What's up, hottie.” Collins says to you as you walk by her and Princess. “Oh please!” You say laughing and going to hug her. “Ugh come back I don't think I can deal with Langdon by myself any longer.” She says with a whiny tone in her voice. As if he heard his name he comes out of a room and right where you're standing. “Am I dreaming or is that you Gonzalez?” He says, wiping his eyes and assessing you. “Yeah it’s me Langdon don’t get too excited.” You missed them all. Yeah you were the same with the night shift but it was different.
You feel his eyes on you. It wouldn’t be the first time today. Hell it wouldn’t be the first time ever since your first shift together. After he comforted you in the Ambulance Bay you had a small flirtation going. Even Parker and Shen were in on it, clocking the shared looks, small touches, even tiny compliments. But lately they’ve become more flirtatious. Shen couldn’t believe his ears when he heard you tell Abbot he gave “DILF Energy”. It was normal between you two. Others might think it was weird but you flirted with everyone so it was an everyday thing. You’ve never been the shy type, always speaking your mind in some way. You were a grown women and to be fair you were lonely. A little flirting now and then with Jack never hurt anyone.
So when the day shift heard the way you and Abbot acted during the night shift rumors started and bets were placed.
Betting Pool: Gonzalez and Abbot finally hooking up?
When?
Who initiated it?
Date after?
Jack Abbot was hot, like annoyingly hot. Like distracting you in the middle of an intubation kind of hot. Not only that but he was smart and kind. When you work together you fall into sync. Practically reading each other's minds. You would never tell him though. It was too embarrassing to say out loud. The only thing stopping you was you. It’s not like he’s your boss, you’re both attendings in the ED. You were both grown adults.
You could see him being a good boyfriend, hell even a good husband. You don't want to settle down just yet. You just started your career and you weren't stopping anytime soon. But a part of you was willing to change that for him.
“Nice boots.” You recognize the voice. You spin around in his direction. “Oh these old things? Well you're right, they are very nice.” You say looking down at your boots then back up at him. “You look good, cowgirl.” He says removing a piece of lint off your hat. “Do you know the hat rule, Abbot?”
“No, what is it?” You take off your hat slowly and place it on his head gently. “Lo que no sabes, no te hará daño caballero.” You whisper into his ear. Being so close to him sent chills down your spine. “Keep it, it looks good on you Abbot.” You turn and walk away back to the room your best friend was in.
Later on after shift it occurred to him that he still had no idea what you meant by “The hat rule”. He decided to search it up, eager to know what this meant and why you said it to him. He opened a link from an urban dictionary and was surprised when he saw the definition.
The Cowboy Hate Rule:
Put simply, you wear the hat, you ride the cowboy/cowgirl.
There’s just something about a man in uniform that is so incredibly attractive
Especially that man

“ALICIA YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN.”
After a hard shift in the ED you like to calm down in the Ambulance Bay.
Jack is looking for you to return something you left in the break room.
What happens when he sees you having a panic attack and doesn’t know what to do?
While it’s calming down in the ED you tell Lena, the night shift charge nurse, that you were going to take a breather outside if anyone needed you. You had been on your feet for over three straight hours with no breaks in between. At this rate you're surprised you haven't collapsed mid trauma.
You were just going to get some air, maybe sit down on the bench outside. All you needed was some quiet and peace. You open the camera app on your phone to see what you looked like.
It was a wonder that you still looked the same as you did when you clocked in this afternoon and not like a disheveled dog. Thinking back to your most recent case.
A young highschool girl that had a tension headache that made her collapse. Her parents brought her in and were scared for their daughter. After a conversation with the patient you had figured it out. Academic Stress from her parents and an eating disorder. Stress from school mixed with malnutrition from not eating causing her to lose consciousness.
She reminded you of yourself when you were her age. Feeling like the weight of the world was on your shoulders. Your mothers sickness. Being an over-achiever in school. Not having a support system.
You're finding it difficult to breathe. Lightheaded. There's no way this is happening right now goddamnit Ali control yourself. Your first day and you're already having a panic attack? That is not a good look Ali, you need to calm down. Just Breathe.
This coffee is terrible. Damnit Jack you should've made some before you left your house. He’ll drink it anyway but-. A bright glint in the corner of his eye interrupts his thoughts. He turns towards it to see where it's coming from.
A ring.
Gold. A slightly thick band. It's covered in tiny sparkling diamonds that catch the light. Cartier.
Who in their right mind would leave this ring in the break room? He tries to think who this might belong too? You. When he shook your hand he could feel the cool metal of rings on your fingers. It must belong to you. He goes out to ask Lena who it might belong to. “Oh that is a beautiful ring, definitely Ali. She is probably the only person here that would be able to afford to lose that ring. She's in the ambulance bay taking a breather.” Jesus the more he thinks about it the more it makes sense. You just give off money vibes. How sophisticated and put together you look compared to everyone else in the ED.
Jack knew some doctors wore minimal jewelry but even yours screamed expensive. How much does this ring even cost? Before returning it to you he paused, taking out his phone and checking for himself. Holy Shit.
$8,150 as in dollars. That ring was more than his watch and it wasn’t cheap. Now he had to return it because he could just imagine how freaked out you must be over losing this ring.
Reaching the ambulance bay Jack hears something. A small voice. It’s you and you're laughing? No you can’t breathe. “Shit. Hey, what's wrong?” He puts the ring in his pocket and reaches for your arms holding you up. “I can’t- I can’t breathe.” Jack doesn't know what to do so he does the only thing he knows. “Just give me your hand and put it here.” He places your hand on his chest. His heart. “In and Out. Just like I am. You're okay Ali. I’ve got you, you're okay.” You stop gasping and focus on his heartbeat. Calming down and feeling like you're okay enough to remove your hand from his chest.
“God I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for that to happen. I was just thinking about something and I don't know why I started hyperventilating.” You're rambling excuses to him trying to make the situation less embarrassing.
“It’s all good. I know sometimes everyone just needs a little anchor to bring them back.” He puts his hands in his pockets still standing in front of you. He feels like the weight of the ring is holding him down.
“Uhm I found this in the break room.Lena told me it might be yours?Thought you would want it back since it looks kind of expensive.” He says with a chuckle handing it back to you.
“Oh my god! Thank you. I usually take my rings off when I wash my hands in the break room. I guess I must've left it in there." You take it back and put it back on your middle finger. “If you don’t mind, I have a question?” Jack says wanting to get an answer to the question on his mind. “How do you afford it?”
“Excuse me?” You are slightly taken aback by his bluntness. “The nice car, the expensive jewelry, all the stuff in your locker. I know how much people in the ED get paid and no offense but that ring alone is practically one check.” He looks you up and down waiting for an answer. He didn’t mean to come off as rude, he just wanted to know. Curiosity got the best of him.
“My father. He is a businessman in California. He sends me gifts or money. Anything I need and can’t pay for he provides. I mean most of the stuff I have is old gifts from him, things passed down from family members. I pay for my own things too. I'm not a spoiled brat if that's what you're thinking.” You pause and sit down looking down at your hands.
“I worked really hard to get to where I am. I passed my classes. I got my degree. I stayed up till late studying. I got into the best colleges. I’m not like those rich girls that expect to live off of daddy’s money forever.” Jack looks at you,not with judgment but softness. “I’m sorry,I didn’t mean for it to come off as rude.” He says sitting next to you. “I can tell you worked your ass off to get here. Everyone respects you. You fight for your patients. Good qualities to have as a doctor.”
The Ambulance Sirens cut your conversation short. Both of you raise your heads up quickly to assess the incoming traumas. “Back to work I guess.” Jack says, reaching a hand out for you to get up off the bench. You take his hand and stand up moving to walk inside the ED. “You just gonna stand there or what, Abbot?”
He laughs to himself slightly enjoying the banter between you two. He reaches up to grab both ends of his stethoscope draped around his neck while walking behind you. This was going to be a long shift for the both of you.
AHH cute interaction between abbot and his future wife he just doesn’t know it yet.
Hopefully y’all like this and please lmk of any other suggestions for these two!!
"Abbot does make eyes at everybody. He's a flirt."

LATINAS FOR ABBOT OH MY GOD-
creds: lcverp3rl on tiktok
I screamed. This legend.
I screamed 😆
"What makes me so emotionally available." I'm dead.
Lasting Impressions
My Moon My Man- Feist
pair: Jack Abbot x f!Latina
warnings: mention of blood, religion(bible quote),family death
dual pov: Alicia/ Jack
Men hate powerful women. Men hate when a woman proves them wrong. Men just can’t handle the power imbalance.
But there was one particular man who found it attractive. Jack Abbot.
He didn’t think he had to worry about her until she came in the ED and acted like she owned the place. Smart. Beautiful. Persuasive. Strategic. She was all of that and more.
He didn’t personally know her despite small words exchanged between them during handoffs from day shift to night shift. Jack heard things about you from Robby during their occasional hangouts. His star resident.
The way Robby talked about you made him think you were a goddess in scrubs. But when he finally met you in all your glory he felt star struck. Jesus.
You had come into work earlier than the rest of the night shift on your first day being an Attending and had already picked up a few patients, working with the day shift on their current patients. Running a code in one of the trauma rooms with Langdon on what looked like a woman with stab wounds in her lower stomach. Christ you were a sight for sore eyes.
You weren’t afraid to get a little blood on your hands. Working efficiently on keeping your patient alive like it was as easy as breathing. You seemed to get the woman to stop coding with the help of Langdon and right when you opened those doors, ripping off your gown and gloves you said something he couldn’t quite catch but nonetheless you looked satisfied with your work.
The two of you locked eyes for what felt like a breath and for a second Jack couldn’t hear Dana calling for him. You looked away continuing your conversation with the other residents.
“Hello?Earth to Jack!” Dana said. Oh shit. He almost forgot he was at work. Practically forgetting the whole reason he was standing in the middle of the Emergency Department. Jack walks toward the nurses station almost embarrassed for having been caught looking at you. “What do we have here?” He says looking up at the mess of a board the night shift is going to have to clean up. “ Nice of you to join us, Abbot.” Robby says from his chair with a drained look on his face. You could always count on Robby for a passive aggressive response to anything.
Jack goes to Robby looking for the answer to his only question right now. Who are you? “Hey Robby? Who’s the lady who was running the code with Langdon in there?”
He says pointing his head where you stand talking to Princess about further treatment with your patient. Robby’s looks at you wondering how you two have never met in the almost 6 years that you’ve been working here. “That’s Dr. Gonzalez, she was one of my star residents but now that she's an attending she’s gonna be working Night Shift with you.” He said with the cadence of someone who hated their job. (To be fair he does hate his job…most of the time.)
Jack knew he was going to be working with someone new but he didn’t expect them to be someone like you. He figured like most residents you’d accept offers from other hospitals that were more…well better? It was a rarity that a resident stayed as an attending like you have but he couldn’t help but feel glad that you two would be working together.
“Shit I need to go to the gym more often” Alicia said to herself as she ripped her gown off after coding a patient and successfully getting them back. Langdon chuckles, “Yeah? Why is that Gonzalez?” You give him a look that honestly would scare anyone else. “The fact that I’m tired and practically out of breath from doing chest compressions is why, Frank.” You make sure to say it with light sarcasm so he doesn’t take the fact you called him by his first name as a dig.
You and Langdon go way back, always arguing to get the gold star approval from Robby. It became instinct to make sarcastic remarks to eachother about anything and everything. A tiny mistake from either of you become a joke for the next week. Honestly you’re not sure how people aren’t tired of your rivalry but it motivates you both to better.
“Okay, que tenemos aquí?” You say checking up with Princess about the results of the different tests and labs you ordered for your other patients. Running over all of them making sure you don’t see any abnormalities. Then you notice him. A man just staring at you. Tall. Brooding. Jack Abbot. Christ it shouldve been illegal to look that good in hospital lighting.
You were aware you’d be working with Jack but it's hitting you now that you’d be spending hours on end with this guy. “Uhm Ali? Everything okay?” Princess brings you back to reality with her question and you can’t help but feel embarrassed that you’ve been caught staring at Jack. “Yeah all good. Let me know when the CT scan comes back on our patient in Trauma 1?” “Yep, I'll let you know.”
You loved your job. The adrenaline made you feel like you were flying. You always worked well under pressure which made this the perfect job for you. But you also loved helping people, making sure everyone was cared for. Having the ability to heal people and make sure their family has one less thing to worry about.
“Hey Ali come over here!” Robby’s calls you over to the nurses station where Abbot is also standing. Walking with confidence like you always have you fidgeted with the pendant on your necklace. It was a gift from your mother when you turned 10. It was a gold chain with a Virgin Mary pendant, the words Psalm 46:5 engraved in the back of it.
“God is within her. She will not fail.” You weren't really religious but you grew up going to church every Sunday with you mother and grandparents. You catch yourself praying sometimes for patients and their families whenever something goes wrong in the ED.
"I figured I would introduce you to my best resident Abbot, well attending now since she finished her residency." Jack looks at you with intrigue, not with judgment but with respect. "Abbot this is Dr. Alicia Gonzalez this is the other attending your going to be working with on the Night Shift from now on."
"I've heard a lot of good things about you and your work Dr. Gonzalez." Abbot says reaching out a hand to shake yours. You reach your hand out to shake his and it feels different. His calloused hands against your soft ones. "Oh thank you! You can call me Ali you don't have to be so formal. We're gonna be working together for a while so.." Oh my gosh just stop talking or your going to embarrass yourself. "Your right we should get comfortable with each other sooner rather than later." Jack say's while looking you down noticing how sophisticated you look even in plain scrubs.
You see Dana walking towards you with a coffee. "Trauma Incoming. Car vs. Pedestrian. 5 minutes out." "Alright, thank you Dana. Mohan your with me on this one." You walk away from Abbot and Robby and immediately focus on the incoming trauma and not the handsome man in front of you.
Sorry I've been busy lately and haven't been able to post. But here is a small meet cute between the the two!! Currently working on the buildup to how they started dating! LMK if there are any specific moments you want to see between these two!
