One of the (lower-ranked but still important!) reasons I think people should learn a second language if they are monolingual is to viscerally understand the frustration that comes with trying to explain yourself in a language you don't speak well and are learning, and so they know that broken spoken language doesn't mean anything about someone's level of intelligence or interiority.

oh yeah re: noticing antiblackness i feel like im insane because the amount of times ive noticed a Black character having a non-Black child (even if theyre another POC), especially if that child is meant to be their bio kid.... it is a bizarre thing to notice but i feel like i'm seeing it a lot lately, most recently in the he-man movie. the Man At Arms is played by Idris Elba and he does a great job, his daughter as a child is played by a burmese-irish actress according to IMBD and a brazilian actress as an adult and like. am i crazy? am i reading too much into this? because she's also a pseudo-love interest (for the white man main character) and for a while is a lot more put-together than his dad (who i do think has a good arc, i dont dislike their part of the story and the idea of failing so hard your kid kinda has to raise herself, but like.) am i crazy. i feel crazy. when i told my friends about this they thought it wasnt a big deal and maybe its not but.

I haven't seen this movie so I cannot confirm, but that does sound pretty weird. To me that shows how the idea of a Black child is not "child enough", and that a Black woman is not "beautiful enough".

Again, I'm not in best form right now, but there is a pattern of Blackness not being seen as... Able to be empathized with, as much as a nonblack counterpart. So, an unambiguously Black love interest? Nahhh. A Black child, pitied or seen as innocent? Nahhh.

I would like to say there is a bit more context to this specific case! Teela has never looked like Man-At-Arms in any He-Man cartoon or reboot because they aren’t biologically related, she’s the Sorceress’ biological daughter that Man-At-Arms adopts, definitely could still be anti Blackness, my intent isnt to speak over those who know better, but I just wanted to add there it something actually lore related, it just wasn’t yet explored, but if like the director hopes it becomes a trilogy I expect it will be.

The thing is the recent series by Kevin Smith went back to suggesting Teela IS Man at Arms biological daughter in a flashback. Unlike the 80s filmation series, which explicitly shows Teela's mother giving Teela to Man at Arms to raise, the Smith series implies her mother stepped down from her position for a time to be with Duncan, have a child, and then go back to her work.

So there IS precedent for her being his biological daughter and having a Black man as Duncan but opting to abandon the Smith plot element in favor of a non-Black actress for Teela is at best a step backwards and at worst pretty anti-Black.

There are so many talented, multiracial, Black actresses who could have done this part. There was no need to fall back on the older 'adopted' angle to avoid it. There just wasn't.
