I like music. This is abundantly clear to anyone who knows me. It consumes my life. It's nearly all I think about. I love indigenous place names in north america so much because, unlike most european place names that are named after some asshole who claimed it, or like, something in Christendom, our place names are meant to help people easily identify them with major landmarks and water features (most people would be arriving via lake or river). but then you look at the name of a place and it’s like “this is where I saw a lot of wolverines” or “the curved lake at the end of the bend up north” and it’s like. fuck yeah it sure is. and then you look at settler place names and you’re supposed to know the difference between two different St. Johns that are both in the maritimes and it’s like come the Fuck On man

it’s also often an act of quiet diplomacy between communities that have tension or are otherwise feuding to name a place after what you Do there or what you can expect to find. like “this is a good place to harvest salmon. I may not like you very much right now but I also don’t want you to starve”

There are many things going on politically that are frustrating, but something that I find even more frustrating is how telegraphed the trajectory we’re currently on was and continues to be.

Roughly two years ago, there was a family member that I outlined how exactly this was going to happen.  How certain minorities were going to be labeled as being intrinsically criminal, and how this would lay the groundwork for future atrocities.

I pointed to specific language in Project 2025; Republicans literally spelled out what they were planning to do in advance.

I was ignored.

I’m not sure what it takes to get our fence-sitting “allies” to care, they might never…

…but given enough time and how bad things eventually get, they’ll say they did.

Okay, I don’t normally add on to posts but in this case I’ve got to.

Rachel Ann Bovier is a Pittsburgh legend who has been publishing her poems in city newspapers for decades. In more recent years, she started putting up these bill boards along major roads. For what reason? I have no clue. But I would often pass them on my way to Oakland for therapy. They never failed to cheer me up.

As a young trans writer, they gave me this precious little spark of joy. There was someone like me, a writer, a Pittsburgher, a trans person, who was confident enough to put their face on a bill board! I would always smile as we passed by and my mom took note.

Fast forward a few years and it’s my 21st birthday. My mom has been super excited about my gift and teased me about it over and over again. She said it was the best gift she’d ever gotten me and in many ways she was right. It was a custom poem she commissioned from Miss Bouvier! It congratulated me on my birthday, my academic success, lots of little stuff. It was simple and sweet and perfect.

I’m still not out to my parents about being trans, but that poem serves as a reminder to me that trans people are every where, they are artists, they are all ages, and their visibility is essential. So thank you to Rachel Ann Bouvier for being a great poetess and a Pittsburgh treasure!

The European Union already forced Apple to abandon its proprietary charging port and adopt USB-C across its entire iPhone lineup. It just did something bigger. A new EU mandate requires every smartphone sold in Europe including Apple devices to feature a battery that can be replaced by the user without specialist tools, without voiding a warranty, and without sending the device to a manufacturer approved service center. Batteries must maintain a minimum capacity threshold after a set number of charge cycles and replacement parts must remain available for up to ten years after a model goes on sale.

The consumer electronics industry built its current business model around batteries that degrade, cannot be replaced at home, and create a natural upgrade cycle every two to three years. The EU just legislated that model out of existence in the world's largest regulatory market.

Apple, Samsung, and every other manufacturer now faces a choice between redesigning their devices for the European market or accepting that their current hardware architecture is no longer legally sellable there.

Given that no company walks away from European consumers voluntarily the phones are going to change and once they change for Europe the rest of the world will ask why theirs still do not.

I highly recommend that anyone who struggles with depression or eating well to start taking a multivitamin to make up for things they might be missing. the improvement will be slow but it helps a lot especially when you need to work towards long term goals, it'll give you more energy to do so. plus you can get them in gummies, which serves as a mild motivator for taking them.

unfortunately the only way for anyone to forge any amount of community is letting themselves get uncomfortable and building a tolerance for it. the stranger danger culture is ultimately making the world a lonelier place and I think people should be more willing to talk to others that might not fit their standard for "comfortable" (LIKE HOMELESS PEOPLE). I certainly do not enjoy being on the other end of this as I'm a fairly social person and that makes a lot of people very uncomfortable, which in turn makes my life very lonely, and I completely understand how this affects other people's survival when they cannot create a social network because nobody wants to allow it to happen.
